New school wanting us to go in

Lizzy2020 · 26/03/2020 10:46

Starting new job in September. School has asked all new recruits to go in for I assume training and planning starting from tomorrow till July. Not going on payroll till September and won’t be getting paid for these days attending. Would you go in? Under normal circumstances I wouldn’t have questioned it but I feel right now when government advising not to go out and not mix it’s ridiculous and selfish of the school to ask this especially seeing I will have to travel by public transport to get there.

I don’t see why they can’t have the training etc. Online and do it virtually instead of us all being in a room together. What’s your opinions?

No! You are not yet employed by them. They cannot expect you to do this.

PaquitaVariation · 26/03/2020 10:49

No, that’s ridiculous, especially if they’re not paying you! It would be different if they were starting your employment early.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 26/03/2020 10:50

No. Never have I heard that.

Ask them if they will be paying you supply.
Or tell them you are contracted somewhere else until Sept.

It's a cf request.

PurpleDaisies · 26/03/2020 10:50

Talk to your union. This is out of order.

Lizzy2020 · 26/03/2020 10:51

@remus thank you! I was expecting the usual mumsnet of how wrong and selfish I am to think of only myself! Lol

I’m worried if the other recruits will all turn up and I’ll be the only one who doesn’t. I don’t want to start off on wrong foot. I’m really worried about this virus as is everyone else. I just feel the school is not thinking of our health.

AngelaScandal · 26/03/2020 10:52

That’s be a hard pass from me. WTF

PurpleDaisies · 26/03/2020 10:53

If it’s training, surely this can be done via google classroom or zoom?

Lizzy2020 · 26/03/2020 10:53

Wow other replies are also supporting my thoughts. Thank you everyone. When I spoke to PA they made me feel really awkward and they said no they will only pay me from September.

GuyFawkesDay · 26/03/2020 10:53

Noooooo.

No pay, no work!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 26/03/2020 10:54

If they persist in saying this, you should think very carefully about if you actually want to work in this place. It's completely out of order.

LonginesPrime · 26/03/2020 10:55

No because:

  1. If it weren't for coronavirus, you'd likely be in another job until July so they're taking advantage of the crisis and the fact schools are closed to get unpaid hours out of you.

  2. you're not paid until you start in Sept, so while the odd induction day might be fine under normal circumstances, why the fuck should you work for four moths for free???

  3. it's a job that can easily be done remotely so it contravenes government guidelines for the lockdown.

  4. lots of people will be self-isolating or have a vulnerable person in their household so if this applies, you would be unable to go anyway.

This school sounds like they a massively taking advantage of the crisis to get free labour - to be frank, I'd be querying whether I wanted to work for a head with this low level of integrity if I were you, OP.

donquixotedelamancha · 26/03/2020 10:55

Are you in a country with coronavirus? If so this is unlawful.

noblegiraffe · 26/03/2020 10:56

What? They want you to work for free? On non-essential work? In the middle of a global pandemic?

That is batshit. Just say you are not available.

Wildlingyoumakemyheartsing · 26/03/2020 10:57

To be completely honest, I'd second guess any job if this is how they are at the start. Are you sure you want to work there? My last school paid my current school to release me for a day of training. The other one asked for one day. Yours can't be expecting you to work for months unpaid?

Lizzy2020 · 26/03/2020 11:04

Thank you all for your responses. Would you go in under these circumstances just for tomorrow (first session only) and then leave it or would you not go in at all.

Vote please: 1) just go in tomorrow 2) not go in at all

OP posts:
PurpleDaisies · 26/03/2020 11:06
  1. don’t go in You have to make a stand on this-it’s against government guidance about how to not make people die in the pandemic.
Letsnotusemyname · 26/03/2020 11:15

Are you an NQT?

Have they sussed out that your course has finished early and so they think you are at a loose end until September?

They’d have a bit of a nerve without Corona virus but this goes against all medical advice.

Tell them you've gota bit of a sore throat and temperature but should be ok to come in!

sarahC40 · 26/03/2020 11:19

Phone your union immediately. This is non essential.

sarahC40 · 26/03/2020 11:20

Don’t go in!

noblegiraffe · 26/03/2020 11:20

I’d not go in at all. Following government advice.

LonginesPrime · 26/03/2020 11:38

2 - not go in at all

Even if you would have gone in for a day or two unpaid under normal circumstances, it undermines your assertion that these are not normal circumstances if you go in for a day and contravene the lockdown.

Also, are you not working from home for your current school at the moment anyway?

1066vegan · 26/03/2020 11:41

Don't go in at all.

You shouldn't anyway as you aren't being paid, but all the more important now as they are asking you to do something which contravenes everything we are being told.

Are you in a union? If not, join the National Education Union asap. I've had several emails from them about the current situation. The latest emphasised that teachers should only be asked to go into school if they are needed to care for children and that only the number of staff needed to keep children safe should be in school.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 26/03/2020 12:23
  1. No - don't go in. Going in suggests that this ridiculous command is legitimate.
AngelaScandal · 26/03/2020 12:57

If this was a relationship we would be shouting RED FLAG 🚩

Consider carefully if this is the type of school you want to work for.

astuz · 26/03/2020 14:01
  1. Definitely do NOT go in.

The worst they can do is take back the job offer, but this would actually be a good thing, because they are clearly horrible employees, who are trying to treat you like shit now, without any thought for you as a human being, or any thought for the rest of the country. They will be even worse if you did start working for them properly.

In fact, I would seriously consider not going in and then at the same time telling them to stuff their job. There'll be loads of jobs available for September, because schools haven't had time to recruit.
