Delay Phase

Has anyone had any meetings, briefings or other information on what the delay phase would look like for staff?

Curious to know how many have had nothing, and what those who HAVE had something have been told.

Nothing yet in my school, but the word 'pandemic' has been used now, so who knows.

LA have been useless, as usual. Our HT only half jokingly says he listens to the Today programme to find out what’s going on.

Actions driven by HT and also prompted by Governors, but we’ve been working with our cluster schools to send out a consistent message. We also have a VLE set up.

We've been supervising the kids washing hands 4x a day (primary) and have suspended our open door policy to parents in the mornings. All visitors are being asked to wash hands on entering and leaving the building. There was a big meeting last night so there may well now be an official plan for closures

SpinachQueen · 12/03/2020 12:28

A series of assemblies today for all year groups, and all pupils signed an online learning agreement. I feel a fraction more prepared for eventualities.

The announcement was what - 30 mins ago? and we’ve had three teachers and 1 TA call in sick for tomorrow because they have temperatures or coughs. FFS Boris.

phlebasconsidered · 12/03/2020 19:33

We had a meeting, looked at Google classroom, said fuck a lot, made plans to photocopy loads and got given boxes of tissues rather than have to buy our own. An audit of internet access and ICT has just been emailed to parents. My son has just shown me how to access google classroom.on the ps4 which is going to upset a lot of year 6.

PenOrPencil · 12/03/2020 20:02

@phlebasconsidered, could your son please explain on here how to access google classroom on the PS4?

Corneliawildthing · 12/03/2020 20:38

We can't even get the kids to wash their hands properly in the classroom as the hot water is scaldingly hot - the janitor insists it's at the correct temperature Hmm

noblegiraffe · 12/03/2020 21:12

It’ll be interesting to see what schools look like once the ‘cough’ advice kicks in. Will we be proactively policing it and sending kids home who cough or look sweaty? How many teachers will be off? Are we looking at jumbo classes in the hall?

MoltoAgitato · 12/03/2020 21:15

Oh FFS it’s the worst outcome for us. Can’t afford any kind of cover, and yet we haven’t been told to close, but show me a teacher who doesn’t have a cold/runny nose/a n other symptom at this time of year. Some schools will close, others won’t and we’ll get it in the neck no matter what we do.

Yet again, small schools completely shafted.

Doginahat · 12/03/2020 21:44

Lots of speculation about the 20th being shutdown day. I'm exhausted by the discussion and prep.

likeafishneedsabike · 12/03/2020 21:55

I’ve heard that about the 20th as shut down day.
The next week is going to be a farce with students and staff off ill.

Minesabecks · 12/03/2020 23:37

If you think about how many staff normally work through a cold - but this time they can't, first sign of a high temperature or a cough and you need to be off for a week, even if you feel fine, as you may be contagious. Staff absences will be immense.

Guiltyfeminist1 · 12/03/2020 23:45

I have a proper stinking cough. Messaged my HT tonight and he's said to just come in if I feel okay apart from the cough. For context, I'm extremely hardworking and haven't had a sick day in 2 years so he knows I'm not the type of person to make stuff up. No idea what to do as I actually do feel fine but my cough is genuinely alarmingly loud/persistent. Surely my colleagues and pupils will think I'm irresponsible for coming in??? What should I do?

noblegiraffe · 12/03/2020 23:52

Funny, the heads are all about sticking to government advice when it’s about keeping the schools open, but as soon as it might mean they need to fork out for cover, government advice goes in the bin.

Stay off. It’s what the government are advising and you’re right that it will piss off colleagues and pupils (and their parents) if you’re coughing all over them.

Minesabecks · 13/03/2020 00:05

Guiltyfeminist the government advice is quite clear. If you go to the NHS website you can use their symptom checker. It's been updated today - when you put in that you have a cough, it will tell you to stay at home for 7 days - if you also feel very unwell it tells you to phone 111.
Your HT is being completely irresponsible.

YY.

This will close schools. Our school had a load of staff absences last week as sickness is rife again, as well as tonsillitis. This on top will break the camel's back.

DippyAvocado · 13/03/2020 06:31

I agree this is the big problem, especially as the guidance seems to be that if anyone in a family has a cough or fever, everyone is to stay home for 7 days. The sceptic in me thinks schools will have to close due to a lack of staff and then the government can blame the schools instead of themselves.

DoubleAction · 13/03/2020 07:09

Yes,I think this advice has effectively closed schools anyway, although on an adhoc, no one knows what's going on kind off way and of course the responsibility for the decision is with schools not government.

DoubleAction · 13/03/2020 07:10

Is it Dippy? I thought only those with a cough or fever and everyone else carries on as normal

MoltoAgitato · 13/03/2020 07:23

Our cover teacher insurance doesn’t kick in until after a fortnight of a staff member’s absense. We can either close due to Coronavirus or we can close because we have run out of money. We’re an off-brand glue stick away from a deficit budget as it is.

DippyAvocado · 13/03/2020 07:36

I think officially that is the guidance for the moment but possibly increasing it. There's so much contradictory info in the media it's hard to make sense of it. However, many teachers will have to stay home with their own DC if they develop a cough or fever. I would usually call in grandparents for childcare help but I wouldn't put my parents at risk so I'd have to stay off myself.

noblegiraffe · 13/03/2020 08:02

The press conference said last night that it was affected person to isolate for the moment only. In weeks to come it will be the whole family and they will also expect to advise elderly people to stay indoors.
