New job - been bumped down to M6

I was on UPS3 plus TLR1a so the payout is absolutely huge.

I’m guessing I have absolutely no way of challenging this? Sad

Is this what you’ve been offered? Was the job one which was advertised as being MPS/UPS? Did the advert include a TLR?

inbranstonpickles · 07/03/2020 09:01

No I knew it was without a TLR, sorry - that’s obviously more than fair enough! However, it’s meant I’m losing in take home terms nearly £1000 a month (ouch.) I know I should have checked exactly what the pay was and this was naive of me. But if they had stated I would be paid at M6 I wouldn’t have accepted the post on those terms.

Have you signed a contract and resigned from your current role?

EstebanTheMagnificent · 07/03/2020 09:03

And - did the published salary range in the job advert include UPS?

Tinnedpeachesandcream · 07/03/2020 09:04

Ouch! Did they not tell you salary when they offered you the job? I went from being full time HoF to part time plain old classroom teacher last year. My salary drop was about £1k a month, but obviously I was going part time as well. What’s your reason for leaving previous job?

AnduinsGirl · 07/03/2020 09:04

As pp asked, what did the ad say? No way would I (or could I afford to) take this! :O

donquixotedelamancha · 07/03/2020 09:06

Esteban's questions are crucial. Also, what did the offer letter say?

You need to speak to your union.

inbranstonpickles · 07/03/2020 09:07

It is an ‘ouch’ and I’m REALLY kicking myself. Truth be told it was a really rushed application - I started a new job after Christmas, there was a major safeguarding fail and I saw a maternity post advertised, thought it would be fine as a stop-gap and I could manage without the TLR but I’ve lost UPS as well.

Tinnedpeachesandcream · 07/03/2020 09:07

Whenever I’ve been offered a job I’ve been told salary over the phone as part of the job offer, then waited for it in writing before resigning current post.

inbranstonpickles · 07/03/2020 09:08

I was just offered the job: as acknowledged I was naive not to ask, but I did think I’d be paid to scale.

OP posts:
Tinnedpeachesandcream · 07/03/2020 09:08

So are you already working there?

inbranstonpickles · 07/03/2020 09:10

I started after half term, but the formal offer letter (with my pay Sad) only just came through Smile

You usually have to justify why you should be paid at UPS - it’s not directly transferable. Our LA has an extra bit in the application form for people who wish to stay on UPS. Is it LA or Academy? Did they really not discuss salary when they offered you the post? Have you signed a contract?

inbranstonpickles · 07/03/2020 09:11

No, it was never mentioned fallulah, and it’s never been mentioned at previous job interviews, either.

OP posts:
Fallulah · 07/03/2020 09:11

Oh, cross posted. Not sure what you can do about it now other than talk to the head and explain that you used to be UPS. Offer to take on something whole school so that you can go back up?

inbranstonpickles · 07/03/2020 09:13

It’s a temp contract so I’m not sure if that would work. It’s a big worry as I’m really going to be struggling financially - people manage on less of course but it’s just a big drop.

OP posts:
Tinnedpeachesandcream · 07/03/2020 09:13

I was in independent schools before so had never officially done threshold. However had had lots of management and whole school impact evidence, so although I’m only a part time muggle rather than management at the new school I’m on UPS1, but that was offered to me in the initial phone call and I accepted before I started.

Hairydogmummy · 07/03/2020 09:27

That does seem really unfair. It must have said in your application form that you were ups3? They should have made it clear when offering it to you that it wasn't a post where they were going to pay ups. Even if it was in the ad. They've just got themselves a ups3 teacher for MPS pay! There's not much you can do though and with hindsight should have checked when they offered it to you. I'd check with Union but I don't think they have to pay it these days. You could also explain to the head. If this happened to me I'd have to get looking for something else.

EstebanTheMagnificent · 07/03/2020 09:33

Oh dear. I think your only bet is to request a meeting with the headteacher to plead your case. Take your threshold application and proof of your previous pay. They might meet you halfway. Explain that you would not have accepted the job had you known the terms. If you are feeling very brave then be prepared to hand in your notice in line with the terms of your contract. They might decide it’s worth the extra money not to have to recruit again.

inbranstonpickles · 07/03/2020 09:36

I think I’m over a barrel as the earliest I can leave is summer when I’d be wanting to go anyway!

OP posts:
TK1930 · 07/03/2020 09:46

I think the way it’s done now is that this (pay point) should have been discussed when the job was offered so that things were clear before you signed the contract/accepted.
Good luck in your new search

EstebanTheMagnificent · 07/03/2020 09:47

Did the advert say UPS?

inbranstonpickles · 07/03/2020 10:07

I honestly can’t remember - teach me not to apply for jobs in a rush!

OP posts:
bluerad · 07/03/2020 10:11

Of that's such a difficult position for you to be in. At our school we sometimes advertise M1-M3 posts and get very experienced teachers applying. I've taken to emailing them to check they have seen the salary to avoid wasting their time and mine. Lots simply don't see it so don't beat yourself up op. Hope you manage to cope until the summer and another post comes up.

inbranstonpickles · 07/03/2020 10:12

Thanks, blue, that’s helped to know it isn’t just me. Flowers
