Is anyone’s school affected by the Coronavirus?

Ours isn’t, so all is good there.

I have a totally crazy and irrational jealousy of teachers that are being sent home for 14 days to self isolate after half term ski trips though.

Ridiculous, I know as it’s a killer. I think that shows how unhappy I am at work and how much I need to get out of teaching.

In fairness though I think you were referring to my jokey post being from a non-teacher, when I am in fact one. Just absolutely no signs of the virus where I live so no plans yet for anything 😀

noblegiraffe · 03/03/2020 17:02

Ah sorry, I wasn’t expecting a teacher married to a teacher Grin

Pentium85 · 03/03/2020 17:05

@noblegiraffe

Yes, we are both as bonkers as each other!

Aragog · 03/03/2020 17:07

Bigchris - lots of teaching staff have children, including those due to sit exams. My dd is due to sit a levels this summer.

A lot of it if just fantasy drama if - the idea of two weeks not doing anything. Obviously we all know that if the whole school closes in reality it will mean plenty of work for us still to be doing but using unfamiliar methods and with patchy communication systems.

OneOfTheGrundys · 03/03/2020 17:19

Yes... a little humour is ok as we are in THE STAFFROOM!
Many parents on here too and we are all worried about how we’d cope with whatever weird bumpy ride the next few months will hold. It’s not just exam classes that are affected. It’s all groups who will lose a huge chunk of schooling. I’m almost more worried about my Year 10 tbh, our curriculum coverage will be really impaired. Year 11 are pretty much in revision mode, bar a little bit of content left. Revision can be done remotely and guided much more easily in my subject. First time content teaching not so much.
How the exams will work is another matter though.

I have a whole text left to teach for both A Level and GCSE... aargh.

Greenmarmalade · 03/03/2020 19:25

@WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles I think it’s a bit too soon to ask.

noblegiraffe · 03/03/2020 20:29

According to my Y13 mock marking, I still have the whole course left to teach Hmm

OneOfTheGrundys · 03/03/2020 21:55

😂 been there noble and Piggy!
Too, too much to think about right now. My head’s imploding.

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 04/03/2020 07:56

Thank you green I tend to agree!

Luunaa · 04/03/2020 18:07

We have a lot of worried staff as we're a SEN school and our kids hygiene is none existent.

Petition government to consider closing schools at an appropriate time and for an appropriate period?

Pretty sure that’s already on the action plan. Perhaps further down than some people would like, but you’re petitioning for something they’ve already done.

OneOfTheGrundys · 07/03/2020 16:05

I think there will be a rolling program of closures as they predict different areas will be affected with different severity at different times.

ListeningQuietly · 08/03/2020 14:17

Parent here
many years ago my kids' school closed for a two terms due to a fire.

They managed to get electronic lessons set up for all of the kids and then as buildings were brought back into use the GCSE kids were given priority
and the exam results held steady
BUT
the kids were allowed to be out and about while they were not doing work and all of the teachers were allowed to deputise for each other on childcare while they worked from home
AND
it was a secondary

It worked then at that school
I cannot in any way envisage it working large scale
or for primary kids

Piggywaspushed · 08/03/2020 14:44

Nobody had anything contagious then either!

NeurotrashWarrior · 09/03/2020 04:51

I think there's going to be a cobra meeting today on this.

CouldBeOuting · 09/03/2020 16:53

We have had one parent withdraw both her children from school to “home educate” them. She asked us to authorise an absence “until the Coronavirus issue is resolved” and we said we couldn’t. We have told her that there is a waiting list of children for both her children’s years and she is going to lose their places in our school but she is adamant that school is not safe......

Staff are carrying in as usual but with extra handwashing and cleaners are being extra thorough.

OneOfTheGrundys · 10/03/2020 11:20

One of mine is at an independent school. The latest letter said day pupils would have to be collected within 2 hours if they had the order to close and boarders within 24.

Maythelordopen1 · 10/03/2020 11:23

I’m in Ireland where there are current talks of shutting ALL schools for a MONTH!!

BashandWhizz · 10/03/2020 17:42

As a parent of primary aged children and a secondary school teacher, I can just imagine having to stay at home for two weeks, going bonkers, while sending masses of cover work in as I try to entertain two kids....

NeurotrashWarrior · 10/03/2020 18:15

Wow May!

The chicken pox sagas were enough to send me bonkers; I actually wanted to go into work to escape the monotony!

Procrastination4 · 12/03/2020 10:19

Re shutting down all schools in Ireland for a month-that was a Facebook rumour.

Maythelordopen1 · 12/03/2020 11:52

@Procrastination4 schools have just announced they are closing until March 29th

Procrastination4 · 12/03/2020 12:35

I know! Thank goodness but what about those idiots who’ll be coming back from Cheltenham??? Should never have been allowed to go ahead.
