I've just started work as a SEN TA in a new school. They haven't sorted out access to my online payslips yet so wonder if you can advise? I'm paid a 32 hr week. This month pay in my account was £801. Does this sound about right? Many thanks for your help 😊

Is that for one month? Will you be taxed on that?

fedup21 · 28/06/2019 20:28

Is that your take home pay?

Sounds about right to me.

FeatherySquawkington · 28/06/2019 20:28

I get about £800 for a 25hr week. That's after deduction of pension and NI. Hope that helps.

BentBaastard · 28/06/2019 20:30

Money is shocking but sadly sounds right

Itsanothernamechange · 28/06/2019 20:37

I hope not. I work 30hrs and get £250 more than that.

Geraniumpink · 28/06/2019 22:14

That sounds about right, unfortunately!

fedup21 · 28/06/2019 22:16

What did it say on the advert/your contract when you applied for the Job?

Aragog · 28/06/2019 22:16

What level TA are you?

Roughday · 28/06/2019 22:20

It sounds about right to me , every TA pay differs from area to area .. I get around 700£ for 27 hours and other areas get a couple hundred more and some abit less ... I’m a level 3 SEN

Roughday · 28/06/2019 22:32

And each year you should go up a grade , only when you get to the top grade that’s it ! No more pay rise. At least that’s what it like in my borough

YourSarcasmIsDripping · 28/06/2019 22:36

Is that with NI and pension taken out?

Do you have your contract? There should be a section about your wages and how to calculate it if you are pro rata.

But it sounds about right I's say, even though I thought SEN TA's are paid slightly more.

Ella1980 · 28/06/2019 23:02

Thanks people, you've been really helpful. I'll dig my contract out and get back to you all.

I'm a qualified primary teacher of 15 years but really don't want to return to the job. There simply is no work-life balance. I'm currently working 1:1 with a child with high level SEMH and loving it. I obviously expected a huge drop in pay...but not quite this much!!!

I would check it's right op. It seems low for 32 hours when some others on the thread are getting similar amounts for fewer hours.

fedup21 · 28/06/2019 23:23

No, my teacher friend (of nearly 20 years experience) found herself in the same situation. The pay looked ok in the advert but when it was pro-rata (38 weeks) and ‘only’ 32 hours (instead of 37.5) it was actually pretty rubbish!

YourSarcasmIsDripping · 28/06/2019 23:44

Just check the contract and how much you get per hour. To be entirely honest it's a bit low given the hours. Have you worked a full month?

Chocolatedeficitdisorder · 28/06/2019 23:50

If your area is anything like mine, you must remember that you'll get a bit taken off each month to pay for the extra 7 weeks unpaid holiday. It reduces your monthly wage by a fair chunk, about 4 days worth of pay. In my case I get a lower wage, but paid in 13 equal parts.

I was a basic TA until recently and I earned £850 for a 27hr week. Now I'm a higher level, I get about £1150 for a 29hr week.

bananasandwicheseveryday · 29/06/2019 00:09

I'm a TA so am possibly on a slightly higher scale (sadly, lsa's who usually work 1-2-1 tend to be on a slightly lower rate of pay here), but I earn a little more than that for 28 hours. I am also at the top of my pay scale. Our pay is also paid every month of the year, but only for the actual hours we work and that means that we actually get paid slightly fewer hours each month, but it is spread over 12 months so we don't have any months with no pay.
But yes, the pay you are getting seems in line with pay for TAs, lsa's etc. I actually think we're are a real bargain in terms of the cost vs the work we do.

Yeah the pay is rubbish, seriously thinking of moving out of education now my children are grown and don't 'need' me in the holidays.

TheTroutofNoCraic · 30/06/2019 19:04

I'm currently working as a bog standard L3 TA and my take home is about £980 for 30hrs...and I don't have SEN allowance.
Bear in mind it's your yearly salary, divided into 12 monthly payments, like in teaching, so that you still get your pay in the school holidays.

TheTroutofNoCraic · 30/06/2019 19:06

Also, if it's your first pay then you may have been emergency taxed.

PotteryLady · 30/06/2019 19:15

I'm L3 working 36.5 hours and take home £1300.

Ella1980 · 30/06/2019 19:56

Thanks all. Just had a look at my contract and it says Grade E Point 04. Starting Salary £13,487.49. Based on £18,426 (ft) x 32.5 hours pw / 37 (fte) x 43.4524 weeks / 52.1429.

Going on this, does £801 take home pay pm look about right?

fedup21 · 30/06/2019 20:05

They really make TA pay complicated, don’t they?!

Ella1980 · 30/06/2019 20:07

They do! Most people seem to have a Level but I have a Grade?
