What do teachers actually want as an end of year gift?

Just that really. Dd's male teacher, year 1, has been fantastic and gifts seem to be the done thing at the school.
He gave all the class a Christmas gift and I sent a voucher for Costa from DD.
What would you genuinely appreciate, am thinking probably not another best teacher coaster with a picture of an apple.

Email or letter to CoG or HT

Letter / card (to me) thanking me for working with their child (I keep these to cheer myself up if work is going badly)

Costa card
Book token
Bath / shower / soap stuff

But I’d trade all these in for thirty sets of parents who listen to their child read, help with homework, volunteer their time if they have it, send their child in to school on time, don’t send their child in when ill, and refrain from usung class Whatsapp groups as a forum for bitching Angry

Please no mugs. Wine is always iffy as you don't know the teacher's preference unless you ask them. I always get given lots of white/ rose when I'm a red drinker so it just gets passed on to MIL.
Yes to chocolate, nice stationery, vouchers...but really just a genuine thank you is all you need to give. Smile

LuluJakey1 · 26/06/2018 23:56

Nothing except possible a thank you or a thank you card. Teachers should not 'want' anything and should be happy if they are given any present. Parents should not spend more than a couple of quid if they must buy presents.
I say all of this as a teacher.

So true hopeclearwater

Have I missed the post that says the frames photos were a joke? I can't see it Hmm

JohnnyKarate · 27/06/2018 07:26

I had thought the posters were joking about the picture it was just a funny image. But saying that greathat said they have received pictures of children as a gift so some people must actually do that!

BellMcEnd · 27/06/2018 07:32

I’m actually a bit disappointed that the frames photos are a joke.

We club together and get vouchers plus a personalised MoonPig type card.

I do generally buy wine as I figure if I was a teacher I’d need it plus it’s pretty easy to regift. If I know the teacher well (small school) then I’d always try and get something more personal.

We’ve also bought things like nice travel mugs, pens and hand cream which seems appreciated.

I’d have LOVED to present DS2’s year 3 teacher with a framed photo of him. They really didn’t hit it off Grin

TheletterZ · 27/06/2018 11:19

I sometimes brought the school library a box set as a whole school thank you rather than an individual teacher, and thank you cards/ thanks in person to the teachers/TAs/ others who have had direct contact. Hope this has been OK.

ReservoirDogs · 27/06/2018 11:37

Of course the framed photos weren't a joke but once it was pointed out what a spectacularly crap present it would be in the absence of being able to delete MN posts they have said it was to save face!!

whathaveiforgottentoday · 27/06/2018 11:41

Last year's most useful present was a pack of sharpie pens.

3dogsandcounting · 27/06/2018 12:15

Reservoir You got me! I’ve even been known to put my children’s photographs on mugs too. The shame.

Framed photo of your child! 😂 Imagine getting a picture of the one child you never want to see again. 😶

My daughter loves receiving handmade and handwritten cards from the children, and cards from the parents are appreciated too. Mugs seem to breed, chocolates are good, but if you are determined to spend money gift cards are best.

Macaroni46 · 27/06/2018 22:10

I was once given stick insect eggs! I kid you not! After the summer holidays the parent in question caught me on the playground to ask how the stick insects were doing? I lied and said ooh fine thanks. In reality I had thrown them away 😂
I have also received depilatory cream and a photo album all with photos of a pupil who'd been a right pain all year. Needless to say I didn't keep those either!
For me, wine every time, or even better something bubbly like prosecco!

fussychica · 27/06/2018 22:31

Email to the head or HOD plus
Tickets to football/ cricket
Beer
Amazon vouchers
Restaurant vouchers

SaltySeaBird · 27/06/2018 22:45

It may have been a joke but my DSis is a teacher and I’ve popped round at the end of term to steal her wine (she isn’t a big drinker but often ends up with a lot of bottles) and she has received framed photos or photo key rings of their children! She has received some exceptionally odd gifts over the years.

MapMyMum · 28/06/2018 10:00

I think you need to imagine what would you like to receive potentially 30 times over every year and go from there...amazon, book or shopping vouchers that arent too specific, a nice thank you card, maybe wine or beer or nice flowers. In our school all the parents of each class group togetger and give 5e each to buy a voucher and card so theyre not inundated with piles of sh*te each year, we do the same at xmas too.

Groovee · 28/06/2018 18:33

We finished up today. For the staff room we got home made fudge, then our local farm grows fruit and the mum had brought in cherries and strawberries that were enjoyed at lunch. It was much appreciated.

greenlavender · 28/06/2018 20:35

I'd also be gutted if someone gave me a moleskin notebook which was already written in! Nice coffee table book for a chap I'd say.

BingTheButterflySlayer · 28/06/2018 20:52

DH has just joked we need to get one teacher ear plugs... she's had child number 1 this year and child number 2 looks like they're heading her way - and child number 2 is a right bloody gobshite!

I'm really blooming struggling - want to get them all something as they've been fantastic for my kids (and on a professional level -they've helped me a lot get back up to speed on the changes of fucking everything that have happened while I've been out of the workplace) - just so many staff who are fab in that school and involved with the kids in terms of intervention groups for my SEN child and social skills interventions for my child with the social skills of a housebrick and jobshares and the like!

mammmamia · 28/06/2018 21:24

Moleskin is a lovely idea and maybe a card inside it not written in the book! Might steal that one.

Bathroomwoes · 28/06/2018 21:39

I like the idea of the moleskin with a few stories for the teacher and a few drawings involving the teacher- is it so bad to write in the notebook itself?? I think DS's teacher would love that!

BingTheButterflySlayer · 29/06/2018 13:55

I can vouch that I've worked at a school where a family DID give the teacher and TA a framed photo of their child as an end of year gift. They also then put them on the family newsletter circulation list - for the lovely annual "September began with Tarquin backpacking across the Himalayas armed only with a paperclip and his wits while Jacintha became the first 12 month old to obtain her Maths GCSE at grade A" newsletter!
