What is the etiquette for addressing teachers?

Should you use Mrs, etc, then surname? Or is it ok to call them by their first name? Obviously I’m only referring to instances when my child is not there.

I'm a teacher and don't mind parents calling me by my first name. Most of my contact with parents is via email. I'd say it's about a 50/50 split between using my first name and title + surname.

I address all parents as title + surname. I just find it more appropriate as unfortunately in my role I do have to talk to them about serious things such as theft, alcohol/smoking/drugs, cheating in public exams., bullying, and the sanctions for these which can be as serious as expulsion and even occasionally involving the police so I feel it's better not to make that even more difficult with some illusion that we're "mates".

Parents call me Mrs Pops.
I call parents Mrs Smith.

It doesn't bother me getting on mutual first name terms with parents who i have a lot to do with. I don't like first names in the first instance (either direction).

Most call me Mrs, but I don’t mind at all if they call me by my first name. There are some parents I call by their first name too as I’ve been there aeons.
Mind you I would rather the children called me by my first name too. It’s nicer than my surname!

I don't understand the idea of calling people Mr/Mrs etc XXX.

I always like to go by my first name, because I'm me as an individual, before being a part of a family.

The kids have just started calling me god.

"Oh my god" this
and
"oh my god" that

I have tried to stop them but they worship me :)

It's about professional distance and relationships.

I wouldn't call my doctor up and say 'hi can I have an appointment with Moira'. I'd ask for Dr Smith.

When i first contacted my solicitor for moving house we both called each other Mr/Mrs and first names came later.

I'm also one of those people who dislikes starbucks asking for my name so they can pretend we are mates and inevitably get my name wrong
