What’s the latest you could feasably get to school in the morning?

Just some advice really.

I start a secondary scitt in Sept, I have 2 primary aged children at home and I’m currently trying to figure out before school childcare.

I’ve looked at all of the schools I might be placed in and the earliest registration is at 8:40.

With that in mind, what would be a reasonable time to arrive in order to set up for the day. No marking or planning, just setting up.

Thanks

Behaviour is worse after lunch. We moved tutor time to the middle of the day because of this.

Then we moved it back to the start of the day because actually someone consistent needs to give notices in the morning, check uniform, sanction lateness.

Noble - ds’s behaviour used to be appalling after lunch. It was because he had nowhere/no time to eat.

A change of school, change of lunch arrangements & voila!

The best week he ever had was when he was in a show & school suggested he go in an hour later that week. The extra hour made a huge difference.

Incidentally his current school have two tutor times. The very start & the very end of the day. Ds likes that as he can flag any problems/issues he’s had that day.

owl jacket...

What’s an owl jacket??!

Piggywaspushed · 06/05/2018 14:42

When someone wants to look like they are on the premises and still working much harder than the slackers they place their jacket/ cardi over their chair so everyone knows - or thinks- they are still very much on site.
As in ' oh she must still be here because her marking is on the desk/her laptop's still here/ she wouldn't have gone without her cardi'

Before I had children I considered getting in at 8am really late, now I have the childcare issue and can not drop dc off until 8am so I usually don’t arrive until 8.45am. I personally would take up your friends offer. You will then have the holidays to pay back her time. Unless your friend is registered I would think carefully about ‘paying ‘ as it can cause issues however adhoc favours are fine.

I'm glad other people think schools start far too early - and it seems to be getting earlier. The first school I ever taught in was 8.40 for teachers, registration at 8.55. My current school is 8.15 for teacher, 8.30 start.

I don't know why this trend is occurring when all evidence suggests that start times should be later for teenagers.

Icantbelieve · 07/05/2018 19:39

While many people get in really early, you don’t have to. I’m 8 for an 820 start. Many are 8.10.

Assuming no briefings, 40 mins early is uneccessary.

Of course, I’m experienced, but do copying the day before and do most of my work at home

Greenandcabbagelooking · 07/05/2018 19:50

I start teaching at 8:40, so arrive between 7:30 and 7:45. I leave by 4:30 most days. Still working st home though.

I am much more productive in the mornings, fewer people to chat to, no queue for the printer, no phone ringing.

GreySkiesAboveMe · 14/05/2018 19:19

Thanks everyone. I’ve managed to find a CM who will start at 7:30. But not do school drop off! A friend has offered to pick dc up on way to school, as she passes to take her dc too.

I am a history teacher, been doing it for 10 yrs, have a 5 yo and 2 yo (for context)

If you are organised, you’ll soon get used to starting as soon as you get in. Yes I miss the pre child days when I could get in to work at 7, stock the kettle on and make sure I was fully set up for the day, but that’s now not possible. Some days I don’t get in until 8.30, registration is 8.35. I just make sure my lessons are planned, and I either do my photocopying the evening before or plan lessons that don’t require photocopying until later in the day. You just figure out a way, like with anything else in life, when it’s necessary. It’s very doable and I don’t really ever feel stressed about the mornings. I have quite a high level responsibility too but I still manage.
