What’s the latest you could feasably get to school in the morning?

Just some advice really.

I start a secondary scitt in Sept, I have 2 primary aged children at home and I’m currently trying to figure out before school childcare.

I’ve looked at all of the schools I might be placed in and the earliest registration is at 8:40.

With that in mind, what would be a reasonable time to arrive in order to set up for the day. No marking or planning, just setting up.

Thanks

I would say 8am. I once had childcare starting at 8, five minutes from where I taught, and it was a constant stress to get ready and I was a pretty experienced teacher! It isn’t just set up- people need to tell you things, there are often messages to pick up, you will need the loo- you need more time than you think! Mind you I was primary, so maybe the set up takes longer and parents are more likely to try and get you in the morning.

GreySkiesAboveMe · 02/05/2018 12:33

Thanks tan yeah I’m expecting more than just setting up. I meant without planning/marking. I understand there are other things to be aware of.

I thought 8am would be the time.

My dc breakfast club and local childminder (who does drop off at our school) don’t start until 8 😕

And the nearest school I could be placed in is half hr away.

If you have a partner can he do drop off? Room for an au pair? Or contact the cm to ask, some may open earlier but you might have to pay extra. How old are dc- how long till they can be left?!

noblegiraffe · 02/05/2018 12:42

The school might have morning briefings which are before 8:40, and directed time may start earlier than 8:40 as well, you’ll need to ask.

My DCs breakfast club starts at 8, directed time at my school starts at 8:30 and regularly we have a briefing at this time so I need to get to school at 8:25 to make the meetings. It’s just about doable.

However, I’m an experienced teacher, no one is observing me and I can sweep into a classroom after briefing, quickly write something on the board and get the kids in while I’m logging onto the computer (I don’t have a classroom so this is how I normally start my lessons anyway, moving to a new room). A student teacher might want a bit more breathing space than this. I don’t think you’d need to get in at 8, what time would you be able to get in?

SureIusedtobetaller · 02/05/2018 12:43

Experienced teacher, ours start at 8.45, currently getting in at 8 (temporarily) and it’s awful. I never attempt marking before school, but setting up and other stuff takes a while. And there’s always people to see.

noblegiraffe · 02/05/2018 12:48

Oh I’m a maths teacher, which might make a difference in terms of (lack of) setting up to do. I imagine that science and other practical subjects have a lot more to do in terms of getting equipment ready.

GreySkiesAboveMe · 02/05/2018 13:31

My husband works offshore, so can do childcare in the 3 weeks he’s home, but he’s also away for 3 weeks so it’ss all on me at that time 😕

Don’t think I can justify an au pair for half an hr a day. Plus no room.

OP posts:
GreySkiesAboveMe · 02/05/2018 13:33

noble the earliest I could get in atm is 8:40. But that’s not an option 😕

I’m damned if I managed to get so far and then I won’t be able to do it due to childcare!

My dc will be 5 and 9 when i start.

GreySkiesAboveMe · 02/05/2018 13:34

My subject is geography

GreySkiesAboveMe · 02/05/2018 13:34

Ideally I’d like a 7am start childminder, but that seems cruel on my dc! Half 7 realistically.

OP posts:
noblegiraffe · 02/05/2018 14:09

Can you make an arrangement with the childminder for an earlier start for the three weeks your DH isn’t around? £££? As it will be termtime only and not all the time in term time she might be persuaded?

What are you hoping to do for after school care?

GreySkiesAboveMe · 02/05/2018 14:59

Yeah, I will ask her. But the reason why she doesn’t work before 8am is because her child wakes at 8am. Worth asking 😕

After school’s not as much as an issue as after school club runs until 5:30, then childminder can do until 6. So as long as I leave by 5 I’ll be fine.
On the occasions were I need to stay longer I can ask school frienda of dc. I couldn’t do that for 3 full weeks at a time though, esp in the morn

GreySkiesAboveMe · 02/05/2018 16:36

I’ve just asked 2 local childminder’s on the school run and neither works before 8! One is too full from Sept anyway 😕
I’n going to try and pursuade the other with extra cash!

I don’t think I’ll be able to do my course 😕

Just skimming but what di you teach? Some subjects have no 'set up'. You do need to watch out for briefings, though. My school on paper starts at 8.40 but briefing can be at 8.20.

Contracts can also state what time all should be on site by.

Piggywaspushed · 02/05/2018 16:48

Ah, sorry X posted with noble (we do have the same mind on a lot of things!!)

Don't despair, though : it's more unusual these days but I do have colleagues who roll in just in time for briefing and one who doesn't give a shit and is late every day

Piggywaspushed · 02/05/2018 16:52

I found this so frustrating when I had v young DC. Who are these childminders who, in legions, think 8 is early enough? They must lose business!! and who has a child who wakes up at 8???

No before school club at your DCs' school either, I am guessing. Bloody hell; it's no wonder so many women don't return to work; it's the logistics that so often prevent them.

SaintEyning · 02/05/2018 16:53

Coming to the end of my PGCE year. I have been at school by 8 every day. I’m MFL. First school placement 25 mins away, drop at minder at 825. Second placement 60 mins away, drop at 7. Briefings at 825 three days a week. Printing, setting up (the rooms i teach in are all used for tutor time so you can’t get in until they are done). My message to anyone doing ITT with kids is simple: GOLD PLATED CHILDCARE. At both ends of the day. Good luck!

TheFallenMadonna · 02/05/2018 16:53

You need to be in for the start of directed time. That's it. Don't write off the course before you find out when directed time starts.

gussyfinknottle · 02/05/2018 16:57

My dd has a teacher in reception who was never there to greet the children because she had childcare issues and couldn't make it.
Cue every parent saying "we all have [bleep] childcare issues. Turn up and greet my child". She rarely turned up before 10.30.

GreySkiesAboveMe · 02/05/2018 17:10

There is a before school club piggy but again not until 8. Yes, I too wonder why I bother!

OP posts:
GreySkiesAboveMe · 02/05/2018 17:16

gussy 10:30’s a bit extreme!

OP posts:
ohreallyohreallyoh · 02/05/2018 17:28

Ask the school now if there is any chance of an earlier time for breakfast club. I had this issue and the school obliged me with a 7:30 start - I wasn’t the only one who had been asking so it was a numbers issue. Worth a try?

GreySkiesAboveMe · 02/05/2018 17:33

Thanks ohreally It’s worth a shot! My dc school is small and there’s only never more than 14 at breakfast club.

OP posts:
MissMarplesKnitting · 02/05/2018 17:38

I drop mine at breakfast club at 7:30 when they open. It's a 30 minute drive in, and I get there by 8 or close. Mondays DH drops off as i leave at 7 sink can get everything ready for the week at school. That hour means I get my copying done, and lots of admin bits before Monday briefing at 8:25 and I don't feel so stressed.

Am also secondary.
