How far do you travel to school?

Just that really. I've got an interview in a school that's almost 30 miles away. I have young children. I know that my circumstances are different to others' but I just want to get a feel for whether this is usual or am I being a baby?

I don’t but my DH commutes about 27 miles and it takes approx 45minutes. If he had a choice he wouldn’t do it. The difference in our finances in summer is notable for the lack of petrol spending.
That said, he gets ‘decompression time’ whereas I finish work, fetch the kids and am straight into ‘home’ mode.

awkwardsitch · 09/03/2018 13:28

I have kids too. I travel 4miles, 15mins.

Littlefish · 09/03/2018 13:44

I drive for 35 minutes on the way there, but about an hour on the way home as I detour to pick dd up. I wouldn't want it to be any longer than that.

Partridgeamongstthepigeons · 09/03/2018 16:16

45/50 minutes at the mo for me (16 miles), it's fine but quite stop/start. I wouldn't consider anything over an hour drive but if it were an hour through nice countryside with fast roads that wouldn't be too bad.

fruitpastille · 09/03/2018 16:28

I used to do 45 mins but it was only about 12 miles! I hated it as sometimes there were more delays which were unpredictable. It was always a race against the clock to get back for childcare pick up. I'm close to home now which is fantastic especially if I need to go in on my day off.

cloudyweewee · 09/03/2018 19:40

3 miles. 15 minute drive or 50 minute walk. Would hate a long commute.

priority9 · 09/03/2018 19:40

1 mile 10 mins

TheFallenMadonna · 09/03/2018 19:46

30 miles. An hour, give or take a five minutes.

TheSnowFairy · 09/03/2018 19:56

1.5 miles, 7 mins door to door (not rush hour).

leccybill · 09/03/2018 19:59

6 miles. 25 mins in the morning, as little as 15 mins at 4.30pm. I used to do twice that in my last school and it does make a massive difference.

filga · 09/03/2018 22:06

About 300m. Leave my house and I'm in my classroom in less than 5 mins.

wentmadinthecountry · 09/03/2018 23:56

About 35 minutes, but drop dd3 off near her secondary school on the way. Most of it is beautiful countryside. I enjoy my drives home to whatever radio channel takes my fancy. Definitely need an existential bridge between home and work! (Phrase was used on PGCE in 1987 - it stuck!)

tomhazard · 10/03/2018 09:05

I used to commute 20 miles to work when I had 1 child and tbh it did my head in - especially unplanned traffic issues.
I now work 7 miles away (with 2 children!) and I'm home in 15 mins which is amazing.

woodlands01 · 10/03/2018 09:16

10 miles but I have teenagers and a DH who now works from home.

When DC were in primary school and DH had an hour commute each way I worked 2 miles away so I was easily available. Could not have managed anything different and it kept me in a job that was not ideal for over 10 years. I wasn't bothered - I can separate work and home and a job is just a job at the end of the day.

I moved for a 'better' job and it is much 'better' however the challenges are just different.

superram · 10/03/2018 09:38

About 1.5 miles, 25 minute walk, 15 minute drive.

It was life changing, I would time the route.

cricketballs3 · 10/03/2018 10:02

11 min drive - no one where I live though attends my school (Secondary) as I live in a different LA to where I work and there is an excellent secondary here. I wouldn't like to live close to a school I worked at if my neighbours attended

suze28 · 10/03/2018 10:05

My school is almost 3 miles away so the drive takes me around 8 mins as there's little traffic. The DDs are teenagers now and it's always been very useful to be this close to home.

Cleebope2 · 10/03/2018 11:09

Only 12 miles but traffic means it takes 45 mins to get there: leave at 7.55 arrive at 8.40 . I enjoy the morning radio shows though. Only 30 mins home but also busy , leave at 3.45 and arrive 4.15 unless I have an after school meeting or activity. It’s not too bad except I live in the hills so in winter the ice and snow adds even more time despite my winter tyres.

Meant to say that although it's only 15mins I'm at my desk by 7am.

rainbowfudgee · 10/03/2018 18:14

6 miles. 45 mins on a good day, 1 hour 30 mins on a bad day (inner city)

PumpkinPie2016 · 14/03/2018 20:30

8 miles - takes no more than 25 minutes even in rush hour. I also have a young child.

Personally, I wouldn't want to travel 30 miles to work but I have colleagues who do it - one leaves her house at 6am to travel when the roads are quiet. I'm far too lazy for that Grin

bottlegreen · 14/03/2018 21:03

18 miles - 42 mins

ASauvignonADay · 14/03/2018 21:33

About 6 miles but takes 40-90 mins depending on traffic

Bigpizzalover · 14/03/2018 21:37

7 miles about 15 mins getting home as I finish after rush hour, anywhere between 25-45 mins in the morning
