How far do you travel to school?

Just that really. I've got an interview in a school that's almost 30 miles away. I have young children. I know that my circumstances are different to others' but I just want to get a feel for whether this is usual or am I being a baby?

1 mile. 5 mins. (10 if you include nursery and breakfast club drop-off)

I used to live 20 miles away and it could take anything from
25 mins (pretty much all motorway) to ALL DAMN DAY (when the motorway wasn't flowing)
I have responsibilities in school so I have plenty of time to see to all of my work and still feel like I get a lovely amount of
Time with my kids in the evening.
Plus less work comes home too.
Having a very tiny Commute is brilliant.

Oh I'm glad to see this thread! I was going to start one as having a bit of a wobble about applying for a new job...one I would really love at a great school...but quite a distance from me! Well...compared to what I'm used to anyway! My current journey is only 10 minutes and I'm obviously loving that! I've never had to worry about traffic either, as I live rurally and my journey is country roads door to door, so I'm very lucky! If I apply for this job it will change and I'd need to be leaving home much earlier (around 6.30!!) to avoid traffic just to get to school on time. I'd be getting home much later too and sitting in traffic.

About 90 minutes - walk, train, change platforms, train, walk. It's less than 10 miles as the crow flies!

MsAwesomeDragon · 10/04/2018 21:55

I travel 12 miles. It takes 30 mins but that includes dropping/collecting from the cm as well. If I manage a day without getting stuck behind a tractor it's closer to 20 mins, but the tractors/lorries are usually out in force at the times I travel.

I used to do 45 miles. Took me 45 - 50 minutes.

parrotonmyshoulder · 10/04/2018 22:00

45 minutes with dc drop off/ pick up.
You get used to what you have to do I think. I’ve always travelled over 30 minutes - 20 years and 9 schools. It means you have a greater choice of jobs.

The commute is vital. In the UK, one school I taught in was an hour and half each way across London to a school in special measures. I lasted a year, though the journey was not the deal breaker (bullying SMT), I never forgot it.

When I came to Au, I drew circle round where I was willing to travel. I lucked in: Seven miles and twenty minutes, down a road with the sea on one side. I could go on a route that takes me five minutes less on an eight-lane highway, but I'd rather see the sea. Smile

I have to walk about 50 steps to my local school (sorry not a help)! It does bode well though as I'm a Childminder. School runs are a breeze Grin

LartenCrepsley · 12/04/2018 09:18

My drive is about 15 minutes, including dropping DD2 off at nursery (two minutes from school). DD1 is at school with me.

fussychica · 12/04/2018 10:24

DS does a 20 min cycle or 30 - 40 mins on the bus to go 4 miles in outer London. He doesn't drive.

Wonderlady · 12/04/2018 13:29

About 9 miles. Takes 30-40 minutes.

CraftyGin · 12/04/2018 14:06

I used to teach 34 miles away from home, and the journey would take about 40 minutes. Now I am 12 miles away and it takes the same time.

You have to look at the overall package, not just the distance.

NorthernKnickers · 12/04/2018 14:09

Such a huge variation. It's amazing how we all accept our varying 'commutes' once we start doing them. I'm struggling to give up my short one, but I don't like where I'm working, so it's a battle between more than trebling my daily drive or putting up with being unhappy but rolling into work with very little thought!

WyfOfBathe · 13/04/2018 22:17

Less than a mile straight there

In practice, about 3 miles with DC drop offs on the way

Sometimes I would prefer to live further away, but it is convenient!

VanessaShanessaJenkins · 13/04/2018 22:21

3 miles. Less than 10 minutes. Job I recently left was 15 miles and 20/25 minutes. I didn't realise how good it would be working so close to home until I started this job.
