Shit day work stories

I have had a really shit day at work. Spilled coffee on my lap and burned myself, my y11 behaved like idiots (which actually made me think - what's the point of all this? They don't want to learn!) and I had a really unpleasant conversation with a parent.
Misery likes company so...tell me about your shit day!

Agree Showergel
I don't want to be a cog in the exam output machine that most schools have become.

Polkadot1974 · 29/09/2017 10:17

This makes me so sad. Thank you all for being there for our children. I appreciate what you have to do

123bananas · 29/09/2017 11:32

My worst ever teaching day involved a classroom full of wasps with the children's packed lunches trapped inside, the first day with a new class of children, improvisation in the absence of a classroom with a whiteboard and 3 fights. I don't teach anymore.

SleightOfMind · 29/09/2017 11:42

Another parent dropping in to thank you all, from the bottom of our hearts for all you do.
I cannot imagine another profession tolerating the levels of interference you get from every successive change of government/Ed Sec.
that's without the challenging nature of the job itself and the shit pay.
We appreciate everything you do more than we could ever say.

BeauMirchoff · 29/09/2017 18:08

Gosh, I've had enough. School trip today, head of year smiled and talked to everyone apart from me. Yesterday one of the two nastiest kids randomly ran into my classroom, one chasing another, and when I tried to stop them, they barged past me. Disgusting behaviour. And on top of that now I'm feeling even shittier because my kid's childminder yet again criticised my parenting.
Just want to disappear.

MsAwesomeDragon · 29/09/2017 18:15

Oh beau, don't disappear. We've all had shit weeks, I think most of us have had our parenting criticised at some point, I know I have.

Take a deep breath, have a night off and spend some time with your kids this weekend. Then you can start again next week (obviously you will need to plan so next week doesn't turn into a nightmare to).

winewolfhowls · 29/09/2017 18:39

Shit day here too. Really feeling my confidence is being worn down every day

leccybill · 29/09/2017 18:52

Mine too. The 'what days are you free in the October, Christmas and February holidays?' email to do mandatory unpaid intervention just about finished me off today.

SandyBeachandtheDeckchairs · 29/09/2017 19:09

It all seems so emotionally abusive doesn't it. I may run away and join the French Foreign Legion/circus.

OneOfTheGrundys · 29/09/2017 19:31

Ah don't disappear. Parenting is the most fraught thing ever. Except teaching that is.

Y9 horrible today. Constant, relentless annoyances. 🙄

noblegiraffe · 29/09/2017 19:33

Yesterday I'd had enough, but today was actually ok, so hang in there Beau, hopefully it's just a blip and after a weekend's rest things will look more positive on Monday.

And your childminder should keep her opinions to herself.

Littlewhistle · 29/09/2017 21:24

Leccy what are unpaid interventions?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/09/2017 21:28

Sorry people have had shitty days/weeks.

Pretty depressed tonight. It's been a long and busy week and I feel as if I just can't keep on top of everything that either needs doing or that somebody has decreed should be done in addition to the things that need doing.

I'm not usually one for 'Poor teachers' type moans, but feel tday as if I could happily not go back on Monday. The students are (mostly) lovely and I generally enjoy the actual lessons, but everything else is really wearing me down.

leccybill · 29/09/2017 21:41

Littlewhistle Extra lessons after school with Yr11 so they can actually get through all of the course material, prepare and revise for the exam.

elephantoverthehill · 29/09/2017 22:31

Ofsted judgement positive. Hooray! Been to the pub after school tonight. This week has felt like a month. I will enjoy my weekend either in pyjamas or doing things I want to do.

noblegiraffe · 29/09/2017 23:13

Wine Cake and relax it's the WEEKEND.

AuntieFester · 29/09/2017 23:21

Parent here with limited knowledege of schools/education
This thread has made me laugh and cry, I really don't know how you make it through the day... every day, every term, every year.
Hope you all have a better day next week and rest assured that there are plenty of parents who very much appreciate all you do for our DC's even if they don't broadcast it all over social media. I just show my gratitude by supplying cakes for training days and Prosecco at the end of the year!

BeauMirchoff · 30/09/2017 16:25

Thank you for sharing your stories. And for your kind words. Can I ask for some advice now, please? I haven't been in this job long...
How do you deal with unpleasant colleagues?
How do you deal with kids who are unmotivated? Or kids who are rude? Or kids who tell you "I'm not going to need this subject in my life" so therefore don't do any work in lessons...?

My day yesterday---
Free lesson period 2. Three boys running round and round the corridors. They finally left school. They came back half an hour later, screaming obscenities into classrooms and clearly high as kites. Stood in front of them and they barged past me. Nice.

Taught a nice lesson but had two boys sent to me and one refused to sit on a chair and sat on the floor. Then sat swearing so I asked him to leave and he refused, sent for SLT and he still wouldn't move so I took my whole class elsewhere Grin

Did a lunch duty and there was a fight.

Can't even make this crap up. So tired and now it's Saturday and I have books to mark but I just want to watch TV!

noblegiraffe · 30/09/2017 16:32

When a kid says 'when am I going to use this in real life?' I think of this cartoon and smile inwardly.

Then I talk about how even if you don't use the actual methods/knowledge being taught, using your brain makes you smarter and being smarter is always good.

Shit day work stories
Darkblueskies · 30/09/2017 16:33

Yes- 'it's good for your brain' is my stock comment

fairyofallthings · 30/09/2017 16:41

Love it. One of the children once said to me that they had never met anybody who used maths in their job. I just looked at them and asked if they were sure about that [face palm]

elephantoverthehill · 30/09/2017 16:46

There are advantages to teaching D&T Grin. The disadvantage is that rather a large number of not very academic boys choose it for GCSE.

BerryBee · 30/09/2017 16:46

Beau - read Classroom Management by Bill Rogers. It is a fantastic approach to behaviour management.

BeauMirchoff · 30/09/2017 17:03

@Darkblueskies that's awful!
don't mark! Watch TV. It's your DAY OFF ffs. I have y11 books to mark but when I think of how they've been behaving, I'm wondering whether I should even bother.
Thank you for all your suggestions so far SmileWine
