Blazers tomorrow?

Is anyone's school relaxing uniform in view of the high (30 degrees or higher in the South East) temperatures?

Mine (secondary) is not, for some strange reason. Poor kids will be hot, sweaty and smelly clad head to toe in black polyester blazers, ties and trousers.

It would surely be better to say no blazers, or better yet, PE kit.

Long sleeves, rolled up to mid to upper arm

Which is where a short sleeve sits? So where is the benefit in having long sleeves rolled to there? The extra layers of shirt around the arms surely make it warmer than a loose short sleeve?

Oh FGS - it is just a power trip. No wonder children get fed up with school!

BoneyBackJefferson · 18/06/2017 19:14

Blossomdeary

It may well be a power trip, But I would hope (in vain) that people put the blame where it is deserved, which is not the teachers but the head.

noblegiraffe · 18/06/2017 19:53

My school is allowing blazers off, decided on a day by day basis Hmm. When they get to my room which is hotter than the sun, I then tell them to take their ties off and undo their top button too. Some kids don't, though, even if you tell them to.

leccybill · 18/06/2017 20:03

My classroom is on the 4th floor of a temporary building. It is hotter than the sun.
I'll be bringing in my own 2 fans from hone tomorrow, allowing kids to drink water in class and remove blazers, ties and undo top buttons.

We're not all on a power trip, I actually want my lovely students to feel comfortable.

Allthebestnamesareused · 18/06/2017 20:04

No a "shirt sleeves order" has been in force for all of last week so I expect it to continue.

DrDreReturns · 18/06/2017 20:10

It's one way that schools enforce control, by imposing an uniform. Same as in the army etc.
'Uniformity is so important to insecure authoritarian regimes (parochial schools and armies, for example) that they even impose dress codes. Different lengths of skirt or colors of jacket are threatening, and so they are forbidden. Nothing is allowed to mar the long rows of nearly identical troops. Accomplishment matters only to the extent it can be achieved by people who don't look different'

leccybill · 18/06/2017 20:14

DrDre That's a bit much.
In a whole school survey at my place, 80% voted to say they preferred uniform as, in their own words, it stopped bullying, took the pressure off and made them feel 'part of something'.

MsAwesomeDragon · 18/06/2017 20:16

We haven't heard yet about no blazers etc, but I expect that will be the first announcement at briefing tomorrow. So blazers off, ties off, top buttons undone, but shirts still need to be tucked in so they look "smart".

ASauvingnonADay · 18/06/2017 20:19

Our schools has done 'no blazers' when it has been hot but has said PE kit tomorrow!

Greenandcabbagelooking · 18/06/2017 20:22

I absolutely will be letting students remove blazers in my lessons. Drinking not allowed due to the room.
Ties will have to stay on unless there's an edict from the Head.

noblegiraffe · 18/06/2017 20:30

Ties are meant to stay on in my school but if anyone challenges me on it they are welcome to find me another classroom with a more reasonable temperature.

5OBalesofHay · 18/06/2017 20:32

Ties can't stay on with short or rolled sleevesShock head will have them saying pardon next

shouldwestayorshouldwego · 18/06/2017 20:32

I imagine dd would be one of those with a jumper on and a blazer because a jumper won't trigger her sensory issues in a way that a blazer alone will. Apparently it wouldn't be a reasonable adaptation to relax the rules. Fortunately she likes being hot.

echt · 19/06/2017 08:33

I live in Australia, the natural home fucking stupid uniforms, but my school manages it pretty well.

The summer uniform is a dress for girls, who can also wear what the boys wear; a shortsleeved, untailed shirt with open collar, worn outside the shorts/trousers. Shorts can, and mostly are worn all year round, and not because it doesn't get cold; it certainly does.

No blazers, though they'd love it, as all the private schools have them. The more lunatic and puritanical the uniform, especially for girls, the more prestigious is the Aussie rule.

No private school I've heard of allows girls to wear the boys' uniform.

wannabestressfree · 19/06/2017 08:56

I run a pru within a school and it was 88 and 90 in the big glass windowed room.... hell in lots of respects.

I ignore the no water/ uniform policy as I would pass out. As long as they are working and comfortable I am fairly liberal.

We had lots of vommers due to heat last week. :(

thebookeatinggirl · 19/06/2017 17:20

DS and DD came home today very happy, as on arriving in their tutor rooms this morning they were told that if was a non-blazer day because of the heat. Usually they're very strict on uniform so I was pleasantly surprised.

Blanketdog · 20/06/2017 07:41

Dd can wear a short sleeved voluminous summer shirt - but must not tuck it into her skirt, tucking is absolutely forbidden - the skirt is pleated and looks absolutely dreadful with an untucked shirt. So she choose to look neater by wearer the long sleeved shirt which must be tucked. Mind you the boys summer shirt is hideously voluminous as well - it looks like it was designed to contain a very stomach!
School announce on twitter whether they need to wear blazers - temps in high 20s for a few days is normally the criteria.

FithColumnist · 25/06/2017 13:32

Blazers have been optional at my school since half term. Wednesday and Thursday were ties-optional, and Friday was a mufti day. Luckily, I work at a school which is very reasonable about uniform.

(There's always a few kids who still wear blzer, tie and even a jumper, though- very puzzling!)

Redsrule · 25/06/2017 18:57

We have PE kit acceptable for the whole half term, so much easier than teaching over heated kids.
