Supply pay - umbrella company?

Hoping there are some more experienced supply teachers out there...

I have signed up to an agency and they have said I need to sign with an umbrella company so that I can be paid through them.
Problem is, there seem to be an endless number of umbrella companies and I don't know which one to choose!

The agency have one they recommend but I don't know if that is just because they get benefits from this particular one. It's called ePayMe and I'm in London if that makes any difference.

Anyone got any advice/warnings before I just sign up to that one? I am terrified of choosing wrongly and getting screwed over...

However when he gets paid through the umbrella company they pay it as minimum wage and then some of the extra is made up via 'expenses' and bonuses. It's a hassle to send in all the receipts every week but we have to do it or else his wages are short.

This sounds very dodgy.

I'm paid through an umbrella company, my payslip gives my gross pay as my hourly rate x hours worked, there is a deduction from the company expenses are paid on top of this.

As for tax, I pay at BR because I also have another income and I use my tax code for that, this means I have had three cheques from HMRC this tax year with refunds.

Before I left my UC, I was also on BR tax as it wasn't my main source of income at the time. It is really not worth using the Umbrella Company if you are paid BR tax, as any of the supposed "tax perks" (and I use that term very loosely) are swallowed up in the 20% emergency tax, plus UC fees, plus paying your employer and employee NI.

A word of warning to some supply workers who maybe considering working though an umbrella company. They deduct THEIR national insurance from your wages which is high as this includes an apprentice levy. BAD example RACs - you will be lucky to take home 65% net pay from gross. Yes, staff are lovely and helpful but this does not hide the fact that you maybe fleeced and have to chase any expenses at the end of the tax year using a P87 form which is often rejected by the tax office for expenses they state you can reclaim. The 65% take home pay is based on standard tax code 1180. Some umbrellas offer in between site travel which is added to your expenses with weekly PAYE and have a lower margin - BIG NUMBER seems to be one of the better choices.

I work for a couple of agencies Azebra charge 4%of your weekly salary as well as usual deductions and it is capped at £16 a week. The other umbrella company I get paid from doesnt make any deductions of service fee dont know if they charge agency you can choose to have holiday pay deducted at 12% but don't work for all agengies. I am signed to epay me for one agency but not had any work from them yet but they charge £20 a month for their service. I do need to move mine to one umbrella but Monarch has only given me one days work so far. This classed as a second job at 20% tax.

dilpreet please start a new thread for advice. Are you trying to claim 18-19 holiday pay now? Most companies have a ‘claim by’ date - I have worked for agencies with claim by end of the tax year and others do it by the calendar year. You may need to involve your union.
