What did the Royal Family know and when?

With everything that has emerged about Andrew and Epstein, and now the allegations concerning Thomas Markle, I think there are some much bigger questions about what the Royal Family and Palace officials knew, when they knew it, and what they did with that information.

We are looking at two very different situations involving serious allegations of sexual abuse. One concerns a member of the Royal Family itself, Andrew, and the other concerns the father of someone who married into it, Thomas Markle.
In Andrew's case, there are still so many unanswered questions about the extent of the late Queen's knowledge, the protection he received over the years and the role played by senior courtiers. Who knew what, how far back did that knowledge go, and who made the decisions about how matters were handled?

Now with Thomas Markle. What I find particularly interesting is that the Metropolitan Police have confirmed the letter was passed to the office of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in January 2019, rather than simply being handed privately to Meghan. At that time, Harry and Meghan were still part of the Kensington Palace household structure, which they shared with William and Catherine. Jason Knauf was communications secretary for both couples.

Given the seriousness and sensitivity of the allegations, surely it is reasonable to question whether the matter was discussed with senior Palace officials or brought to the attention of senior members of the Royal Family?

Who within the office received the correspondence? Who handled it? Was Jason Knauf aware? Were William and Catherine briefed? Did the Queen or her private secretary know anything about it?

We don't know the answers, and I'm not suggesting that everyone necessarily knew. But that is precisely the point.

The circumstances involving Andrew are different, but both situations raise questions about how sensitive information was handled within the royal institution.

What did the Royal Family know, when did they know it, and what did they do with that knowledge?

Surely these are questions worth asking of the institution with regards to both situations.

Thiis letter is said by the MET to have been passed to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's office for awareness back in January 2019, it was handled through official household channels. At that exact time, Harry and Meghan were still very much a part of the main Kensington Palace structure, sharing staff like Jason Knauf with William and Kate.

Roya Nikka broke the story the Offices were separating in Oct 2018, and that they had been working separately for a while.

They were absolutely not sharing staff at that time. Meghan arranged an ice cream station in the Summer of 2018, but only Sussex staff were allowed to partake. There were even separate Christmas parties held in 2018 for each household.

The Met were very clear in their statement they shared it with the Office of the Sussexes.

You can ask questions all you like, but this really doesn't appear to be something the Waleses, or even the wider RF were involved in.

This is HUGE but don't expect transparency anytime soon. Meghan was inside the RF at the time so the blame lies with them as to why this wasn't actioned at the time. The answerer is obvious - reputational damage pure and simple.

You are assuming that MM actually told 'the RF' (Harry? Charles? HMQ?) of the contents of the letter and its implications. The split between the Cambridge and the Sussex offices started around Feb 2019 which suggests things were getting difficult well before then, so would anyone having issues with their in-laws go rushing to them with details of such a letter?

You're confusing separate offices with complete institutional separation. The Palace's own announcement on 15 March 2019 explicitly states that Kensington Palace would CONTINUE supporting the Sussexes until their new household team was in place. That was three months after the Met letter.

The Sussexes had their own office, certainly, but the transition to a fully independent household was still underway. Separate Christmas parties and ice-cream privileges prove nothing about institutional communications.
The Met says it notified the Sussexes' office. It says nothing about who else was informed. You have no evidence the Waleses knew, but equally no basis for claiming wider institutional awareness was impossible.

So despite the letter coming from the Royal Protection officers and being passed on to a member of the Royal Family, no one thought ' Oh maybe this might be of interest to the Queen? The Head of State and Head of the family who, as pp said ruled the family with such an iron fist that they had to follow her every whim when it came to tights and nail polish colours? No one in the Met thought to follow an established protocol and palm the information off to the Phillippines/Mexican/us authorities? That sounds very odd and surely questions need to be asked of the Met ( and hopefully are being asked) as to why they didn't. Even when one possibility is that they were told not to by ' higher up'. The RPO must be incredibly incapable if they were wandering round innocently not seeing what has been going on under their noses for 20 years. They are meant to protect the Royals but their duty is to the citizens of the UK. As is, as MH said, the duty of Parliament. The arms of state have failed to do that, seemingly in order to protect the RF.

The police should have done it. The Royals should have more of a handle on what goes on in the palaces. They have huge numbers of office staff. What are they all doing? Incompetence or deliberate deniability?

ohdelay · 31/10/2026 11:15

They probably all read the letter and it was a topic of gossip and fun for them and their army of sycophants and functionaries. Then some "official" probably told the police to drop it as it was all so embarrassing, but such fun, and some bootlicking officer got a knighthood. The end. Waiting to find out at the end of the Mets self flagellation that it was the queen wot done it.

The fact that a potential CSA case was mishandled in this way shows that the monarchy encourages corruption and makes it easy to understand how Saville did what he did in plain sight. Money doesn't have to change hands, doing it for future favours or clout still counts. Same with the misuse of RAF bases for human trafficking, procuring trade and military secrets to sell of to your Epstein mates and all the trade envoy sex tours round the world. Our institutions are janky, third world and compromised.

The Epstein files were sealed for many years but lets be honest they knew the names, they would of had a heads up. How long was Andrew allowed to continue abusing until it all came out.

Same with Thomas Markle, in the midst of it all coming out about Andrew its unlikley noone but Meghan knew about the letter. So its good that there are some reporters asking the same questions who else in the RF knew and what did they do about it - are they alo then culpable for not saying or doing enough

I too wondered similar, but I hadn't realised that by the time the letter was sent to the Sussexes, their office was already operating separately from that of the Cambridges.

It's undoubtedly the case that the royals have a history of cover-up under QEII. Not sure about KCIII,nwhose indecisiveness could seem like covering up. What doesn't ring true is that William would sanction a cover-up. He comes across as very clear-headed morally. It would be a poor prelude to his reign to opt to tarnish it over the behaviour of a sister-in-law he has never got on with.

Meghan herself is the one covering up. She was still talking about being a daddy's girl in the Netflix documentary in 2019.

William's strongest defence seems to be an unwillingness to engage with any of the detail. But let’s be precise: the allegation that Meghan’s father sexually abused children is an extremely serious one. If there was credible evidence, it should have been properly investigated, not concealed, minimised or quietly swept aside. Meghan is plainly one of the people caught up in this, and potentially a victim herself. That is the issue here, not whether people happen to like her.

It's perfectly possible only Meghan and a member of the Sussex staff knew about the letter, based on what I've picked up from MN threads. She'd already ditched her father in 2018 because of the wedding suit press photos. We know she had a plan - get rich and famous by marrying a prince, decamp to Hollywood. If the letter contains only vague accusations, as we are being led to believe, and the Met told her investigations were ongoing, which she said they did, she could have just moved on, as she is wont to do. Her failure to follow up to find out how the investigation was going is where she has tripped up, because it looks as though she doesn't care about harm being caused to children.

ohdelay · 31/10/2026 12:31

Lets be honest, Meghan is not directing the British police to break protocol as she has no power and never did. She is an annoying jam making distraction thrown at us to make us stop asking about police interference and misuse of military bases and bags of cash.

This is a thread about what the Palace knew, who knew it and when. Not another opportunity to pour bile on Meghan. Whether you like her or not is beside the point. The questions about institutional knowledge and the handling of serious allegations are surely worth discussing without constantly trying to make her the villain.

MerryAquaKoala · 31/10/2026 12:36

Oh dear. The RF have fck all responsibility for Thomas Markle and his grim offspring. H&M are private citizens. This is a Markle issue. It's for America to deal with, they are Americans.

Quite but some people are just hyer focused on one person and turn blind eye to the wider picture. This thread seems to talk about two situations and what the RF knew and who knew.

We know from Andrew the Queen was involved, who else was in the mertongs and knew. Im not naive to think they only found it when the files were unsealed either. Powerful names in documents ..absolutely theybwoukd of known and no wonder it was sealed for so long.

I think they are just desperately trying to deflect from them having be stuck by TM's bedside for years while he was sitting in the Philippines with very young girls and apparently tons of CSA images in his house and doing nothing until now, when suddenly they feel compelled to run to the FBI. I can't believe his son, who has been living in the FE and sounds like a disgusting person himself has only just found this stuff if it's been stored in his flat. If he's been keeping it quiet so the DM can continue hosing them with cash then he is complicit and frankly, so are they if they did no due diligence or demonstrated no journalistic curiosity or integrity whatsoever. They did the same when Diana died- the press were the people paying thousands to international paps to chase Diana down. They weren't doing it for fun. Then after she died they had to desperately deflect attention from their own actions. They were also the ones paying police officers and hospital staff for stories about celebrities. I suppose ultimately we are all to blame because they do it to feed demand and therefore revenue from the public.
