Did H have to consult HMQ about the names of his DCs like W and C had to?

He should have and claims that TLQ was “ supportive” of them using Lilibet ( which I always thought was an odd word to use). This was denied by Royal insiders . The BBC printed a story saying TLQ was upset , Harry threatened to sue (yawn) , BBC refused to back down and Harry slunk away .
It was so obvious why they used the name .

Prince Archie is. Lillibet is fine as a nickname, used by family only, but chav central as a given name, and Princess Lili just sounds stupid.

I think it's because the names are diminutives (and, in Lili's case, a diminutive of somebody else's nickname).
That's why people use diminutives like "Chuck" and "Cam" to describe the King and Queen now and TLQ used to get called "Liz" by some: to make the idea of someone with a title sound "stupid".

And the reason it sounds ridiculous, is because, in general, royals don't use shortened forms of names with their titles, and "Chuck etc" are used in a "they're not special - look at me calling them by a diminutive" way.

Prince Harry works because we're used to Henry being shortened to Harry from Shakespeare's time.
Prince Archibald would have sounded better, imo, but presumably Harry wished to avoid use of that dreaded third syllable...

lol re the ‘bald’ in Archibald! I can imaging the tabloids now … Prince Archi Bald-Harry’sson esq

Harrison as A's middle name makes me laugh

hepsitemiz · 16/01/2026 09:50

Well, it is an easy, if unsubtle way to dispel any rumours about Archie's paternity, something that, as we know, has blighted H's life since he was born!

ThePoshUns · 16/01/2026 09:58

Had forgotten about the Harrison part. So twee.

Hoolahoophop · 16/01/2026 10:15

I didn't realize it was Harry's Son. What is Lili's middle name.

Edited to say I think I know, its got to be Diana hasnt it.

It's tricky, you need to modernize the monarchy, so having more popular rather than traditional names might be a way. On the other hand what is the point of monarchy without tradition. So a multi sylabol traditoinal name with lots of choice of how to address a person is probably a safer option than going rouge.

Princess Charlotte works. Charlie or Lottie for personal use.

I’m pretty sure I read somewhere that they had actually explained that they chose Harrison because Archie is Harry’s son…I’m surprised they didn’t continue the Icelandic theme and call Lili “Lilibet Dianasonardottir” 🙄

Hoolahoophop · 16/01/2026 13:57

I'm not a big fan of naming your children after someone. Feels like a heavy expectation somehow. Though I see the reason for it in royal circles, you want to really hammer home the royal connections.

Naming them literally my son or my daughter feels very possessive.

Not my cup of tea. Let them be themselves. Or in H&Ms case, let the kids be their own authentic selves. 😂

chunkyBoo · 16/01/2026 14:22

I can’t be bothered to check properly, but I can’t recall any of W&K’s children having any Middleton names … I may be wrong.

The boys don’t - although Charlotte is Pippa’s middle name I think. But it’s also the female version of Charles.

Hoolahoophop · 16/01/2026 14:36

Isn't Carol's middle name Elizabeth? So you get a two for 1

Prince Archie sounds like a character in one of those annoying games that crop up when I’m trying to play solitaire on my phone.

The least said about the other one the better.

Richard Eden still talking about the 'rival court'

https://archive.is/zEDIZ

Not massively convincing.

1 it makes sense to have someone on the team who is good at crisis management in the modern media environment.

2 who exactly are the mysterious establishment who are sheltering to get Harry back? The government are too busy and Charles is already working on the father/son relationship

3 even if they return as full time royals, which i don't believe Meghan is keen on and which a Harry will quickly get frustrated by, William and Catherine are the future of the monarchy. It's not a popularity contest it's a hierachy.

4 Anyone who can't make it clear that Harry's security position is fundamentally unchanged doesn't have much credibility

5 what is most clear is that the tabloids have found another angle to spin for clicks

Plus Carol and Charlotte are kind of different forms of the same name (don't know the proper term). So it's a 3 for 1 really. Plus a lovely name in itself.
