Andrew’s Newsnight interview

I’ve rewatched this today with one of my young adult kids as they had never seen it and many parts were worse than I remembered.

Epstein served time in prison for soliciting and procuring a minor for prostitution. After he was freed, Andrew went to stay with him at his house in New York for days, apparently to tell him that they could no longer be seen together. In this time, they went for a stroll in the park and had a dinner party together. The part I had forgot was that Andrew said he went to see him in person to tell him they could no longer be seen together because he was just too ‘honourable’ to do it over the phone. 🤨

He really didn’t seem to understand how badly he came across and that the interview only served to convince most people of his bad character and guilt.

Honourable. lol.

Andrew could have just never spoken to Epstein again. No phone call and definitely no face to face meeting spanning days required! That’s if he was innocent, Epstein had nothing on him and Andrew actually was disgusted by Epstein actions, which of course he wasn’t because he was part of it all.

I remember watching the interview when it first aired and thinking wtaf. He dug himself in a bigger hole than he was already in. He said something about not regretting his friendship with Epstein because of all the people he got to meet and the opportunities it gave him. I remember thinking that even if he thought that, why did he not see that the only answer to put out to the public in the interview was ‘of course I regret it’.

Also the comments about an event not being a party, but a ‘straightforward shooting weekend’, like most of the audience would know what one of those entailed.

The sweating comments. Pizza express.

The interviewer was great. She said just enough to let him fuck up and he is so entitled and sure of himself that he didn’t even realise quite how bad it made him look.

CathyorClaire · 30/12/2025 19:46

His complicit ex is on record as regarding him as the 'most honourable man' she knows 🙄

I said at the time he looked like a rabbit caught in the headlights just in the trailer.

Laughable that this dimwitted buffoon had the sheer effrontery to think he could hoodwink the entire country.

Appalling he used the national broadcaster paid for by (in his own words) 'common people' to do it.

Who is the ex who said that?

He is so entitled, he really thought the interview would make it all go away and couldn’t see that he made things worse for himself. I remember watching a programme about the making of the interview and they felt sure that the palace would call to say it couldn’t be shown right up until it was on tv. They couldn’t believe that they would let it be shown.

It's a real popcorn-and-drinks cult classic in our house.

Honourable is not something Andrew has ever been. He is a disgusting man. He knew exactly what was going on and was enjoying the ‘perks’ of being Epstein's friend and though being Royal protected him. The interview showed him for the entitled, awful man that he is.

Maybe that awful Lady Victoria Hervey? She dated him years ago and is always sticking up for him. She has also said some despicable things about Virginia. She’s a very disturbed individual.

The ex is Sarah Ferguson obviously!! Always wittering on about what an honourable, wonderful man he is.

You must read Entitled.

Oh is it? She definitely doesn’t know the meaning of the world honourable. Shes as dodgy as they get. What a pair, they’re very well suited.

Tubestrike · 31/12/2025 00:59

Andrew said that he and Epstein weren't actually that close , so why he felt he had to break up in person is ridiculous. But of course, that's not the reason he went to visit Epstein at all.

And stay for five days 'breaking up'

He honestly thought we would swallow it. I am so glad that with luck, I'll never see his stupid entitled face again. Except maybe at Charles's funeral.
Ditto SarahF.

I really like the drama that was made that gave all the background to the interview…makes it even worse Scoop 2024. It gives more context about the women who complained.

Noseyoldcow · 31/12/2025 09:47

Virginia Guiffre said that the Newsnight interview was “jet fuel” for her sexual assault case against Andrew, and indeed it must have been. If you are going to court to deny something you are accused of, it helps not to have shown yourself to be an arrogant liar, with daft stories about Pizza Hut and inability to sweat.

MrsLeonFarrell · 01/01/2026 10:19

I have never been able to get through the interview although I have watched the 2 dramatisations.

I cannot understand why anyone thought it was a good idea to let Andrew do it. They must have known what he was like and that he would only dig himself a deeper hole with his arrogance and lack of remorse.

Or maybe that was the plan? Maybe some on the palace were sick of his behaviour and knew only a big scandal would get him off the working royal roster?

It's that too far fetched of a conspiracy theory?

I have never been able to get through the interview...

Then you have missed a masterclass in giving someone enough rope with which to hang themselves by the brilliant Emily Maitlis.

pouletvous · 01/01/2026 10:40

Didnt Epstein give them huge amounts of money around the time of that NY trip?

Agree. Watching bits of it now you could almost think it was a comedian doing a pisstake of it. But no. It really is Andrew spouting such bullshit.
It gets worse the more times you see it.

I have my favourite bits 🤣

I think the family and those they surround themselves with must all be as clueless and out of touch with reality as each other for them to let him do it and for none of them to realise how bad it was and stop it being shown. He is such a conceited man that I don’t think he’d have listened to anyone even if they did tell him it was a bad idea.

I don't think the whole family are clueless. Charles and William in particular seem to have been working behind the scenes for a while trying to shut Andrew down. With all the competing offices it is entirely possible they either didn't know the interview was happening or couldn't stop it.

It does seem that Andrew's office were clueless and that either the grey men around the Queen were out of the loop or were powerless to stop the interview if the Queen had agreed. Palace PR is usually pretty good which must mean either it was not allowed to interfer or that someone decided to let Andrew show himself up.

The late Queen seems to have had a massive blind spot where Andrew was concerned.

I know, the dramatisations were impressive enough but irl it must have been amazing. Maybe I'll try and watch it, at the time the clips were so awful I couldn't face the whole thing and his lack of remorse and apology.

Of course they knew about the interview. It could have stopped right up til it was shown and the fact it wasn’t shows a lack of good judgement from so many that would have been involved in the decision for him to do it in the first place and to let it be shown. I don’t believe William and Charles didn’t know and weren’t involved in the conversations about it. So either they’re all terrible people, or it is something else that shows the Queen in an extremely bad light.

They’ve shut Andrew down now because they’ve been forced. They would have been warned what was due to come out, the ‘inappropriate friends’ email, and knew they could no longer keep covering for him. They’re terrible people to have been complicit for so long and to have only taken action when they absolutely had to. Andrew is hardly living a bad life now anyway. After being involved with a sex trafficker, raping and abusing, lying and being generally dodgy, he’ll still have a lovely house, money, staff etc. it’s a fucking disgrace.

‘Palace PR is usually pretty good’. 🤪🤪🤪

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 01/01/2026 13:57

Years ago I worked as a temp diary secretary to UKTI who Andrew was an ambassador for. We were constantly on the phone to the private secretary at the palace. As I recall nothing was ever said but I got the feeling a lot was left unsaid at their end.

simpsonthecat · 01/01/2026 14:26

Andrew's PR guru and communications secretary resigned after strongly advising him not to go ahead with the newsnight interview, before it was aired

Someone had a backbone

deste · 01/01/2026 14:50

I remember him saying to the Queen that “he thought the interview had gone well”.

OverlyFragrant · 01/01/2026 15:48

I'm glad he did it as we can now see with all the documents, emails, and personal testimony coming out, how much he has lied.
He has destroyed his own life and its beautiful to see.
