Important green spaces (but not the 150 acres I've fenced off)

William says green spaces are so important for people's mental health.

How does this chime with the 150 acres of land around his latest forever home that's been accessible by the public for the benefit of their wellbeing, but now they have no access to?

Many people have loved the open space they wandered in over many years, only to find it now shut off. I'd be sad and upset if part of my local area was suddenly inaccessible. I expect locals' mental health has been affected.

The Windsors have access to any number of houses that could have been the forever home, but no, they wanted this one.

Which also needed lots of work done on it apparently, as does every other new abode.

Go out in green space, but not the green space I've decided I want.

What about the rest of the 4850 acres that people can use?

StandingSideBySide · 17/12/2025 21:18

It’s their land they can do what they like with it

SeaAndStars · 17/12/2025 21:19

It's to protect the security of them and their children. Seems fair enough given the risks.

Locals living within half a mile of the land living within half a mile of the land can apply to use the land and, as PP said, there are thousands of other acres of land still available for public use.

RainbowRainyDays · 17/12/2025 21:20

I expect William said just that.

For people who have favourite walks, that contain lots of memories, and who've been spending time in specific places over many years, I'm sure many of them will be upset by the changes. People get attached to places that they spend time in. Knowing a much loved spot is now no access can be a blow. It can affect their mental health. It's simplistic to say, well there's plenty other places.

Why do you think there are protests when much loved woods and other open spaces are lost all over the country? People become attached to the green spaces they're familiar with.

Fair enough, developers don't give a shit, but for William to spout how important open spaces are with one face, then shut some off for his own family with the other face is hardly the actions of someone with any depth.

But he wants what he wants.

Can you not see why the children of the heir to the throne need a private space?

The massive security risk for one…

Yes. And there are plenty of houses available to them that already have that space.

Would you happy to have paparazzi and public wandering through your garden?

Like all of us they have a right to chose a property. We can move anywhere we like
They can’t
They are very limited in terms of choice and whilst their choices may be bigger and grandeur than most of us will ever live in it doesn’t negate the fact we still have more variety and choice.

FuzzyWolf · 17/12/2025 21:26

At least it’s not being built on.

My garden came with my house, I didn't extend it by closing off land for public enjoyment.

I doubt you are a security risk though or have paparazzi trying to get a shot 24/7

Most of us are constrained by budget.

There are a large number of properties from them to choose from, none of which they have to buy, and all of which get renovated before they move in.

Winsdor Great Park 'came with the house'. It belongs to the monarch.

They've not extended into public land, they have been giving public access to their private land for years, they've just withdrawn this part of if for security reasons.

Appreciate you aren’t happy about this but your comment doesn’t negate mine

crumpet · 17/12/2025 21:31

they Wouldn’t be able to win either way. If they didn’t ring fence the land there would be an absolute outcry at the additional cost of security to monitor the public access areas. It private land, Windsor Great Park is a big area with plenty of other space. I can understand the disappointment but it’s not public land.

Windsor Great Park is part of the Crown Estates, the monarch doesn't own it.

Given that rich people have been stealing land of us all for centuries a few more acres won’t make a difference 😒

Crown Estates are owned by the Sovereign - i.e. the King during his reign.

They would have won by moving somewhere where there already was land attached. They would have won by Wm not doing his mental health and green spaces schtick at the same time as moving somewhere where he had to extend his own green space into land previously accessed by others.

It’s a hereditary estate owned by whoever is the monarch but not owned personally by the King
It’s managed through a Parliamentary body but the Treasury pay a sum to the reigning Sovereign for it.
The ultimate decision to remove, temporarily or otherwise, part of the Crown estate from public access will be with Parliament.

There you go OP. Take it up with Parliament. Write to your MP.

Exactly

RainbowRainyDays · 17/12/2025 21:47

Oh come on, they bend over backwards to accommodate the royal family's wishes, we all know that would be a useless waste of time.

As soon as the suggestion was made, most of Parliament would be agreeing to it without a single thought, they're so enamoured by them!

They didn't even want to do anything about AMW without Charles' say so.
