What they actually do for us, the British tax payer? If anyone comes along and says they bring in more than they cost, kindly provide a current legitimate source..not a quote from ChatGpt.

Can you give us costings for keeping an elected head of state, with elections every 5 years, how this will save the nation money, and how this will stop you worrying about money - and when will you stop worrying?

Ps...my question to you: "Why can't the royal family financially support themselves?"

No I can't. Hope that helps

Good luck with the revolution, then!

Charities are said to attract more funding if they have a royal patron

It has been proven that this is not the case

Not it hasn’t. Because it’s impossible to prove. The study that wanted to prove that had to acknowledge the fundamental limitations in its exercise.

jumpingthehighjump · 19/11/2025 18:05

Even now Versailles brings in around 15 million tourists per year whereas Buckingham palace brings in 50,000.

This might be because Buck Palace is only open 2.5 months a year to the British public. Just a thought....

I’m sorry but I completely disagree with you , it’s been mentioned previously but I will do it again, other countries have their own history and traditions and celebrations built up through time and their own culture and events , these things work for them because they didn’t have a monarchy and were based on different traditions, we built ours based on our history, culture and traditions ( having a monarchy) , you cannot transfer another countries culture and history to another and expect it to be the same.
as for tourism, yes there are other things that draw them to our island but to pretend that our royal family and historical palaces and buildings still in use today are not a draw is a folly !
the U.K. is known for having a monarchy that is invited to visit other countries across the globe , it’s literally what we are known for! 🤷‍♀️

I don't understand why you think we either have to have royalist traditions or import traditions from elsewhere.

We have a wide variety of religious events and festivals, not to mention Christmas, Halloween, Bonfire Night, Mayday etc. Loads of events, some with roots in Celtic tradition (ancient history in these isles) and English history. Plus, like many other countries, you could still have your military parades and bank holidays if you wanted.

jeffgoldblum · 19/11/2025 18:09

I’m sure if the French royals hadn’t had their heads chopped off and their descendants were still using Versailles, then it wouldn’t be open 24 /7 to the public either 🤷‍♀️

Edited

The Tower of London, which is open year round, has glamour (jewels!), gory history and crucially for your argument, no royals, has only 3 million visitors a year compared to Versailles’ 15 m. I.e. only a fifth. Just a thought……..

jumpingthehighjump · 19/11/2025 18:11

Perhaps the Royals don't have as much cachet as they think then.

I don’t! , I was replying to another poster who keeps mentioning how other countries manage their traditions without a monarchy, so we should do the same. 🤷‍♀️

No one resides there! It is an empty shell, open for just a couple of months a year. How right is that? A 700 room palace shut off from the people.

As for your previous post about Kate, I've never read anything quite like that! No one I know, (and I've lived long and know a lot of people) feels like you describe! You are talking about her like she is some kind of deity! Anyone who thinks a well dressed woman walking in London must be a friend of Kate's needs to get a reality check!

Royals and staff do live in Buckingham palace but the palace is currently being renovated which is expected to be complete in 2027. The palace is the main admin hub for the King and thus the main offices for the royal family are held there. It’s not an “empty shell” it’s a home, an office and it’s open for tourism.

Serenster · 19/11/2025 18:12

Or, France as a global tourist destination will outperform the UK on every measure, and the Royals are a USP here.

I don't know why you are being so sarcastic. I started this thread just asking what the Royal family actually do and why they can't fund themselves. No need to be so condescending.

Whether it is proved or not, I think it will cease to be the case over the coming years. Up-coming generations are going to question more and more the RF's relevance. I think once my generation has died out (I'm late sixties) most of the adoration and servitude will too. I believe the very notion of actually breeding heads of state in a gilded cage will become not just a question of social justice but of morality. I'm a republican and hope I live to see that day.

same could be said for the church-lots of ‘soft power’ & somehow sticks around. Its relevance is questionable with the loss of their political power. Royal families & the church have always been aligned.

It is only open, a few rooms, for the public for 2.5 months of the year. Even Trump's State Banquet was at Windsor. There are 775 rooms.

No members of the royal family live in BP. That's official.
Yes, there will be administrative staff but I doubt they fill 775 rooms!

Ps...my question to you: "Why can't the royal family financially support themselves?"

Why can’t the 50% of the population who are net takers from the state? Not even the £1.80 for the Sovereign Grant.

The royal family receives public funding because they perform a public role and represent the state/our elected government. A pauper elected as head of state will also receive vast funding for all manner of things. An independently rich person who becomes a senior civil servant or MP will receive public funding in the form of a salary from
the public purse. Why can’t they financially support themselves?

Are you saying then that the charities that Prince Harry is involved in don't attract funding despite him being Royal? Why do all these celebs advocate for things like Water Sid etc? Is it just for their CVs?

I’m confused what your point is?
you cannot get free reign 24 hours a day to the houses of parliament or no 10 either 🤷‍♀️

sequinpanties · 19/11/2025 18:33

I think many on here undervalue the " age" of Great Britain and its traditions along with the Royal Family. I do find it amusing when you go to a very old building in the USA and it's 1908😂 .

Sorry you're confused.
My point is... there are 775 rooms. A tour of BP by the british public shows you 19 of these rooms. And that is only available 2.5 months of the year. Just that short time.

The PM lives at No. 10. The Houses of Parliament are MP's at work.

Love how soft power is guffawed at like it’s completely irrelevant and unimportant to leverage any kind of power in a dangerous world right now 🙄

But hey ho, get back to your petty little bean counting republican mentality. Yes, they seem a mediocre shower of shit right now but just be careful what you wish for.
