What they actually do for us, the British tax payer? If anyone comes along and says they bring in more than they cost, kindly provide a current legitimate source..not a quote from ChatGpt.

I am American and totally agree with this. Other countries have palaces and all the hoopla without an actual monarchy. My country’s politics are messed up so i won’t cast stones, but surely this anachronism has to end.

Do you think this about all the 42 other monarchies around the world or just the British monarchy? And as you are American, to coin a phrase, why do you care?

PacersSpanglesandaCabanabar · 19/11/2025 16:44

Can we get rid of Disney too? All that princess shit corrupts the minds of young girls.

As the mother of a daughter, I'd rather get rid of Disney princesses and Barbie than the Royal family.

Charities are said to attract more funding if they have a royal patron. Some charities benefit British people.

Random comment: Italian friends visiting London were so taken aback to see the Queen passing by in her state car that one of them spontaneously crossed herself.

Without wishing to be rude and acknowledging your right to an opinion.
how would you feel if I described your countries traditions and celebrations as all “hoopla” ?
then said your ancestors who signed the declaration of independence as an “anachronism that has to end” ? 😬

I always find it interesting that British culture and traditions can be described in this way, but most people would be horrified if you suggested that they describe other countries traditions in the same way.

Remove Disney and replace with female (are we allowed to call them that under the new regime?) comrades digging potatoes in a vast field for the edification of the people. None of that beauty and privilege lark! Equality for all 💪

Theresabatinmykitchen · 19/11/2025 17:06

Maybe wearing a state issue boiler suit?

I find it particularly odd that a country who celebrates fake castles and royalty should think we should get rid of the real thing! 🤷‍♀️

I am not waving anything aside. I disagree with you that's all. I do not personally believe that if there were no monarchy, there would be no parades. I wonder how come other countries that do not have a Monarchy, manage to do so.
Tourists will still come, and how wonderful for them that they would be able to see the art treasures, the stamp collections, the palaces that are mostly hidden away from the public's view.
I don;t agree with you but c'est la vie.

  1. Brexit was complex and expensive because of laws and trade. The Royal Family wouldn't have the same impact.
  1. You keep talking about people wanting their cake and eat it too. I actually don't want to eat that particular cake, I'm just saying that things would go on without the royals. I actually wouldn't care if I never saw another royal wedding or jubilee ever again in my life.

Odd that you think people are so desperate to hold onto royal aligned things. It's as though you think all parties and special occasions in the UK would cease without a royal family 😁.

Totally agree. Jubilees and royal weddings really are old hat.

It has been proven that this is not the case

I’m sorry but I completely disagree with you , it’s been mentioned previously but I will do it again, other countries have their own history and traditions and celebrations built up through time and their own culture and events , these things work for them because they didn’t have a monarchy and were based on different traditions, we built ours based on our history, culture and traditions ( having a monarchy) , you cannot transfer another countries culture and history to another and expect it to be the same.
as for tourism, yes there are other things that draw them to our island but to pretend that our royal family and historical palaces and buildings still in use today are not a draw is a folly !
the U.K. is known for having a monarchy that is invited to visit other countries across the globe , it’s literally what we are known for! 🤷‍♀️

I find it disgusting that there are people who can't afford to feed their kids or put the heating on, and yet these entitled people get everything paid for.

I'm with you on that one OP.

jumpingthehighjump · 19/11/2025 17:38

As I have said before JeffG, we can agree to disagree. However much you push your point!

It seems we're in the minority. I can only assume that the staunch Royalists don't have to worry about money.

Maybe wearing a state issue boiler suit?

In WW2 Princess Elizabeth did wear a state issue boiler suit but she wasn't digging tates in it. ( Do I remember whatshername at the end of 'Doctor Zhivago?' Have I ever seen the grey blocks of flats in Russia?)

Earlier, when the country was urged to dig for victory, there was a photo of Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret with their spades at the ready, but they were wearing jumpers and skirts.

Sounds like a lot of “hoopla “ .

Can you give us costings for keeping an elected head of state, with elections every 5 years, how this will save the nation money, and how this will stop you worrying about money - and when will you stop worrying?

I refer the Honourable Member to France.

Comparing the British royal family to the French royal family is a weak argument in my opinion. Firstly, the drama and brutal end to their royal family adds to the tourism pull. Secondly, the glamour of the former French court and the splendour of Versailles and its grounds is unmatched. You cannot think that Buckingham palace would pull similar numbers. Even now Versailles brings in around 15 million tourists per year whereas Buckingham palace brings in 50,000.
