The royal family

Am I right in thinking that one year, she wanted to invite a young girl from one of her charities to sit with her in the Royal Box at Wimbledon. The authorities refused, saying it was against the rules or something.
That prompted her resignation from her role.

I think it was the son of Philip Lawrence, the murdered Head Teacher. And yes, they refused it.

The 12 year old son of a recently deceased friend. I believe she received a curt letter, so never sat in the Royal Box again.

Rattatoille · 05/09/2025 22:32

The Duchess of Kent was more royal than the royals, may she rest in peace, a real lady.

That's appalling! On what grounds did they refuse? Whoever made that decision should be hanging their head in shame.

JADS · 05/09/2025 22:54

Really sad news. I loved her rocking the Erdem dress and trainers at one of the Royal weddings. Seemed like she was universally admired and quite rightly so from all the lovely anecdotes. RIP.

That is appalling. So it was fine for Cliff Richard to sit there but not a bereaved child.

Love that she stuck to her principles though.

Even worse, he was allowed to sing. If that's the word for that outrage.

May she RIP. A very impressive person.

🙉 Oh god, don't remind me. Why Cliff murdering summer holiday is considered a golden Wimbledon moment is unimaginable. Thank fuck for a roof!

Seacatt · 05/09/2025 23:19

I just enjoyed listening to this. Desert Island Discs.

The Duchess of Kent was such a lovely lady.

Harry would do well to emulate Mrs Kent

She’s the one seated beside the Queen, gazing down at her baby. I think this photo captures her personality perfectly. While the others appear regal and posed for the camera, she comes across as natural and nurturing—simply a mother cooing over and soothing her baby.

My thoughts too.

She had more dignity in her little finger than that idiot could ever muster.

Such sad news.

I’ve always had a soft spot for her. She gave up using her HRH later in life, worked as a primary school music teacher, and even gave piano lessons. And, rather wonderfully, she apparently had a soft spot for gangster rap 🤣

I’ve also always loved this photo of her, the Queen, Princess Margaret and Princess Alexandra.

RIP Mrs Kent.

Who are all the babies @EmpressSisi ?

Who are all the babies @EmpressSisi ?

Queen Elizabeth with Prince Edward.
Princess Margaret with Lady Sarah Chatto (née Armstrong-Jones).
Princess Alexandra with James Ogilvy.
The Duchess of Kent with Lady Helen Taylor (née Windsor).

HonoriaBulstrode · 06/09/2025 03:37

Even worse, he was allowed to sing.

He wasn't 'allowed' to, he was asked if he could do something to entertain the crowd during the stoppage.

Oh dear. I do feel sorry for the Duchess of Kent, wonder if she was muddled up with Princess Michael of Kent in real life much?

You are wrong. The Duchess of Kent seemed like a lovely woman. The one you are talking about is Princess Michael of Kent. Two different women.

I don’t think he can play the piano….

TheMeasure · 06/09/2025 07:44

@beachcitygirl You have embarrassed yourself. You have confused the Duchess of Kent with her sister-in-law, Princess Michael of Kent, who does not command the same levels of affection and respect.
