The royal family

It's hardly a "snub"

European doesn't buy an American car.

I mean, it would have been nice if he'd bought an actually-British one, but that's really nothing to do with Musk.

AcquadiP · 25/05/2025 16:43

What's the issue with it? Lotus was founded by a British engineer and the Royals have long favoured British cars. In addition, as the article states Tesla has become a "toxic" brand. None of this is newsworthy.

BerniesAuntie · 25/05/2025 16:46

How is this a snub? Why is anyone obliged to buy a car just because it’s a Tesla? Is he snubbing Polestar?

GreenApplesRedApplesYellowApples · 25/05/2025 16:50

I'm surprised I hadn't heard anything about this either.

There's been a European snub of Tesla since Musk decided to make himself unpopular by getting nakedly involved in politics and Trumps tariffs

Charles is briefed on these things. He would never have been caught alive buying a Tesla or 'Swasticar' of course with the current prevailing feeling. It is symbolic of how hard Tesla has fallen. Buying something made in China is also...interesting in terms of current geopolitics. But it is ultimately a partly British owned brand (?) it would be huge news I guess if he had bought a BYD!

The establishment are not buying Tesla's. Not at this point in time anyway.

SerendipityJane · 25/05/2025 17:13

I think the late Queen and Prince Andrew demonstrated the Royals don't give a flying fuck what the public think.

It's interesting to speculate that had Charles plumped for a Tesla, then it would be headline news in the US and tumbleweed here ....

This really is a nothing post! And from the daily beast?

Snorlaxo · 25/05/2025 17:48

Difficult to buy a British brand when there’s very few 100% British car brands left.

A wise move to avoid Tesla which would have attracted the most moaning.

Going for a less common EV like Lotus is in line with being royal and having an unlimited budget imo

Snorlaxo · 25/05/2025 17:52

Interestingly The Sun says that the car is made in the UK and made in Norfolk which is near Sandringham and that Lotus is 51% owned by a Chinese company which is a different twist to the DB article

Did he ‘snub’ BMW and Audi too?

IcedPurple · 25/05/2025 17:56

Sorry, but what does KCll owe to Tesla that not buying a car from that line is 'snubbing' them? They are an American brand so there's absolutely zero reason he should buy one.

I haven't bought a Tesla either. Am I 'snubbing' them?

It reminds me of actors getting 'snubbed' by the Academy, even though the vast vast majority of actors in the world will never get anywhere near an Oscar nom.

Spectre8 · 25/05/2025 18:39

Andrews shady deals at work 😆 that Chinese spy has got his hooks into the rf and influenced what ev car they buy...🤪😝

(This is a tongue in cheek comment)

NewAgeNewMe · 25/05/2025 19:00

I’ve also snubbed Tesla. Who knew? Royal buys another brand -big deal.

The demise of Tesla sales is a huge deal - a big political deal - in the US.They have been reporting about the dwindling sales of Tesla cars in Europe and Tesla car lots have even been set alight and vandalised in the US. By acting as Trumps right hand man, Musk made Tesla political and a whipping boy for the Republican administration. So rising Tesla = Trump Admin good. Falling Tesla = Trump Admin not good. Sort of. Because the Republicans could just throw Elon under the bus at the end of the day, which some are saying has already happened - but it's the main point.

Falling sales in America, Europe and the world at large are thus seen as emblematic of countries and individuals rejecting the Trump administration. Chinese cars having higher sales in Europe (allegedly) is making news because it means America isn't winning in the electric car manufacturing space - again allegedly.

So yes had Charles bought a Tesla it would have been a major statement of many things. As it is, to the previous poster: Choosing not to buy a Tesla in preference of another electric car is actually now a political act by proxy. Major electrical stuff we buy and where it comes from is now political. The Chinese even bought fashion brands into the tussle with the expose on designer bags manufacturing. Companies are being told to keep their manufacturing in America. It's a soft war. That is why the OP is surprised Charles not choosing a Tesla isn't a bigger deal.

I like the fact that Charles bought a British owned car personally. But perhaps for US/UK relations he should have bought a Tesla. That would have gone down well with the current Administration.

kingprawnspaghetti · 25/05/2025 19:41

Ach, he’s probably been very well advised- there are a lot of extremely good electric cars being manufactured in Wuhan - Volvo, Lotus, Polestar, which are all part of the Geely group are now manufactured in Wuhan.
That part of the world is fast becoming the centre of manufacturing of all electric cars.

bluegreygreen · 25/05/2025 20:10

As @Snorlaxo suggests, buying a car manufactured locally (near Sandringham) would seem fairly consistent with the Royal Family's other purchasing decisions.

zenas · 25/05/2025 20:15

Wuhan where covid began.

How many cars does this King of the eco friendly world have now. That we indirectly paid for. Oh forget about the helicopters, it's the cars I'm interested in.

The Bentley probably swopped for the Wuhan machine, but I'm sure there are others that run on mayonnaise or something.

Tryingtokeepgoing · 25/05/2025 20:17

So far this year Tesla have only registered 13,000 cars but a total of 700,000 have been registered. So that means 687,000 people have snubbed Tesla this year alone ;)

The King was never going to buy a Tesla. The royal family has, in recent times, had deals with JLR and Audi, but do like to buy British where possible. As mentioned above, he’s partial to an Aston Martin, and the Lotus is built just down the road from Sandringham.

I am struggling to see any way in which his car choice is a snub to Tesla…it was very unlike to have ever been considered. If nothing else, because all they sell in the UK now is a mid market hatchback and a mid market people carrier. And he’s bought a luxury SUV. I’m sure if Land Rover had a fully electric Range Rover on sale one of those would be knocking round the estate ;)

MyTattooIsBetterThanYours · 25/05/2025 20:19

Wuhan as in covid Wuhan?

The UK car market hasn't really felt the impact of Chinese EV cars yet. But I live in Azerbaijan and the market is completely flooded with both EVs and hybrids. But there's nothing to complain about really - the specs are great, the styling is fantastic and the price is unbeatable.

We bought a Changan Uni-V, 1.5l plus 140kw (188hp, about the same as my first Porsche 911), styling to die for, under £15,000. My only criticism is that the menu system isn't 100% English, there are still a few graphics in Chinese. And, I'm in Azerbaijan but there's no Azerbaijani menu. But that's pretty minor really in the big picture. If the UK didn't put huge tariffs and import restrictions, they would really swamp the UK market.

@IcedPurpleIf he bought a Lotus, he’s bought a Chinese owned car (with British heritage), manufactured in Wuhan province. Check out Zhejiang Geely Holding Group

Nobody wants a Tesla anymore!

GildedRage · 26/05/2025 05:39

Good for the King that he has an EV.
Personally I hate how everything has become trump/usa centric.
Like a naughty child he and his minions need to be ignored more.
Elon needs to return to multiplying his genetic footprint and exploring outer space.

JuliaLivilla · 26/05/2025 06:10

Wasn't it a Lotus Elan that Mrs Peel drove in "The Avengers"? Maybe Charles is living out a youthful crush on the gorgeous Emma/Diana Rigg.
