I don’t think they should Iive their personal lives to attempt to minimise the negative views of people who likely would regard them negatively whatever they do

Well....it's optics isn't it?

I don't know anyone who has gone for a ski-ing holiday followed by a holiday on an exclusive private Caribbean island. I obviously move in different circles to you!

Don’t misquote my post, thank you. I never said I know people who have gone to a holiday on an exclusive private Caribbean Island.

I do however know people who were ski-ing at Christmas and then went to Egypt at this past week. And others who were in South Africa at Christmas and are now ski-ing. And others who have skied for both holidays!

Do you imagine everyone in the UK has the same appetite and budget for holidays as you yourself?

Extiainoiapeial · 23/02/2025 16:57

Ok I'll rephrase it. I dont know anyone who has gone ski-ing (that's in both your examples) followed or preceded by a hot holiday which obviously tends to be long haul because of the time of year.
OK?
No need for you to take offence at that hopefully

Of course different people do different things and as I said it's about the optics as far as I'm concerned.

Let's see what Easter brings

Another holiday 😂

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 23/02/2025 18:02

Tbh they are no different to dh and I when the dcs were younger. Holiday at new year, Easter, summer and then each half term. Circles we mixed in. I don’t ski (unlike most of our social group) dh and dcs do. Now we go without them for some of the holidays!
It’s not that unusual what the waleses are doing but it doesn’t necessarily look good!

JoyousGreyOrca · 23/02/2025 19:06

@WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout You had six holidays a year? How did you have so much annual leave?
In the last two months William and Catherine have already had 17 days holiday.

I used to have seven weeks annual leave in the UK. It’s awful in the US that 2 weeks is standard for a lot of people.

I didn't say he was more transparent, I said I hoped he would be transparent around finances if Charles didn't make changes first.

He's already said he's not going to release his tax figures.

Also Ma and Pa Middleton with them

I wonder what the creditors they left in the lurch make of that?

wordler · 23/02/2025 20:10

JoyousGreyOrca · 23/02/2025 19:49

Seven weeks is way above the average in the UK.

It was five weeks plus nine public holidays which you could save up and take together because it was shift work so you often had to work the bank holidays - was also a three day on three day off pattern so if you timed it right you could get nine days away using only three days of annual leave.

I didn’t work at the time. Dh had [(edit 6 weeks not 7) (excuse fat fingers)] weeks and could do ‘buy back’.

He’d also work some of the time from my parents home in the med which meant he didn’t need annual leave for that.

I’d go out there for the whole summer and Easter and October half terms if we weren’t going elsewhere & he would come for part of it. The joys of having parents who had a home abroad. City break for NY - lovely memories if you can.

And with bank holidays it was quite doable!

JoyousGreyOrca · 23/02/2025 20:33

Fine you do not work so can take as many holidays as you can afford.

Wordler could manage her shifts so she could have more time off.

But William and Catherine are supposed to "work". But in reality do about one day a week and have many many holidays.

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 23/02/2025 20:36

My point was it was normal for our circle, so I’m sure pretty normal for theirs, so they won’t realise it’s unusual.

JoyousGreyOrca · 23/02/2025 20:41

Yes because they are so out of touch

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 23/02/2025 20:52

But they won’t be out of touch with their own circle, that’s my point, so it won’t be unusual for them as that’s the lifestyle they and their friends are used to.

Yes, they are rich aristocrats

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 23/02/2025 21:08

My friends and I holiday all the time. We are not aristocracy (I’m from an immigrant family for a start) and it’s not unusual to holiday like the waleses. The destinations & cost may be different but the amount of holidays are the same.

For me it’s not unusual they holiday the amount they do as it’s usual for my circle. That’s the point I’m trying to make, while unusual for some, it’s not uncommon for a lot of people. And of course some people will think it’s tone deaf.

Anyway I think I’m explaining it badly so I’ll give trying to put an alternative across.

CathyorClaire · 23/02/2025 21:19

I think it's achingly clear the Duke and Duchess of Doolittle intend to lever school holidays and the young kids escape clause as long as they can.

Let's not forget this is a couple who successfully escaped duties as 'young marrieds' for very many years.

Lazy Willy is as much of a grifter as his derided bro.

Seven weeks is way above the average in the UK.

Not for teachers or public servants. Everywhere I have worked has also had base leave of 25/27/28 days plus the ability to buy at least 5 days more.

(Not a rich aristocrat, nor is anyone in my circle, by the way).

The poster did not initially clarify that included bank holidays.
My partner works in the public sector and can not buy holidays, I know friends in the private sector who can.
William and Catherine have already been on holiday for 17 days this year. To be in line with public sector they would only have another 4 weeks holiday for the rest of the year. But they will go away for Easter for at least a week. They take two months off over the summer, and then various half terms. They will be on holiday in total for nearly 4 months of the year.

Serenster · 23/02/2025 21:33

Must depend on which part of the public sector you work in then. In my experience, that was the leave model. You could get 35 days leave in one year - so, seven weeks. And it was common for people to take it.

Other people I worked with also took advantage of the EU entitlement (gone now…) to take 18 weeks of unpaid leave per child, which could be claimed up until the child is 18. One colleague used that plus annual to take all summer holidays each year.

Wasn't there a story he went to stay with friends for a few days and spent all of his time in his room watching porn? Grim.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Mumsnet needs a vomit emoji.

Staying in your room when visiting friends is poor behaviour. Watching porn is beyond poor. Where was Andrew dragged up and by whom?

School holidays above the average 25 days/bank holidays are unpaid for staff and they can't buy additional leave.

JoyousGreyOrca · 23/02/2025 21:39

@Serenster Maybe we should count the Royal family holidays as unpaid leave then and deduct a proportion of money?

The maximum unpaid leave you can take under law is 4 weeks in any year, unless your employer decides to give you more.
It is 18 weeks in total. So nobody is doing that for every summer holiday.
35 days is normally the maximum as a result of long service and the grade you are on. It is not what most people get.
