Where's the poster who kept posting giddy 'Save the date! 10th December! Polo'?

I'm surprised they're not back with excited reviews about the wonderfulness of it all.

Don’t jinx it!
I’ve got PTSD from dealing with those insane posts!

‘I'm always amazed at how much detail d knowledge people have about the inner workings of the royal family-down to who said what to who when! There must be so many courtiers mumsnetting in their spare time!’

but there are not many degrees of seperation between quite ordinary people and the Royal Family. For example, I was friendly with someone who made accessories for both Diana and Fergie, DH’s assistant was best friends with another royal spouse ( their child was a wedding attendant), the warden of DM‘s assisted living used to work for Prince Phillip at Windsor, another friend was closely involved with Windsor Chapel, and someone in my close social circle regularly has 1/2/1 lunch with the Princess Royal. Even though most of these people are discreet , you get an idea of what is going on.

My next-door neighbour in the 1990s used to work at Harvey Nicks, and regularly helped Diana out. (She said she was really lovely.)

And another pal of mine gardens for a family whose children were invited to W& C's wedding. The word came down to me how grounded and solid W&C are.

Oh, and back in the 1970s, my mum was friwndly with a woman qho'd been a tweenie maid for one of the local landed gentry.
She was the first I heard of the Late DoE's infidelities.

So true.

I have links within three degrees of separation to:

  • Gwyneth Paltrow
  • Joe Biden
  • (ex) President Assad
  • Martine McCutcheon

If you think about it, those four people alone mean I have just four degrees of separation to most major film stars, British TV actors, and most world leaders.

So why it's odd that people know stuff about the Royal Family is just bizarre.

A close relative used to work at Michael Parkinson's restaurant, so I am three removes away from all those people Parky interviewed. (The guy who taught me to drive also taught Parkinson's son to drive, so I get enhanced points there, I think.)

Don't get me started on Rolf Harris....

I've not watched it but I think it's pretty grim that they included a comment from one of the players saying they don't even know the names of the the ponies they ride.

It's not surprising as many players do treat the horses like machines but I'm surprised they would choose to showcase such a callous attitude in this programme.

It does make me wonder what Harry was trying to achieve with this programme, as it doesn't sound like it does anything positive for either the sport or the people who play.

Let's be honest here - can you imagine them brainstorming with Harry ? So what are you interested in ? Ummmm polo? Umm weed? I imagine there was not a great choice of content .

Wanky and tedious 😂😂😂😂

Presumably Harry was going on what his previous girlfriends did . Perhaps they didn’t curtsey etc. I don’t think it was anything to do with Harry’s lack of guidance. I think her personality is just arrogant and superior anyway and she think she knows best in every situation. She clearly thought having to the curtsy to the Queen was ridiculous and said so on public tv, so with that attitude there was no help for her. Being a ‘Cali girl’ was clearly something she was proud of and still is. She was totally unfit to be a member of the RF from the start.

Edited

To be fair, having to curtsey to anyone is ridiculous unless you are a member of the Royal ballet!

When Harry and Meghan came out it was top of my screen everytime I logged into Netflix. It was suggested in practically every category where they squeeze even a tiny bit of relevance.

Today Polo came up low down one a secondary list and the snippet they show you when you hover over it is so boring, not even dirty, sweaty boys.

It's hard to avoid the impression Netflix aren't that enthusiastic about it.

Given that even the thumbnails of the episodes that make up the series that Netflix show you, are personalised to your individual algorithm, I am not so sure that that is reliable proof of anything, except your antipathy towards H & M.

I don't know about that. I've watched plenty of sports documentaries on Netflix and I watched the Harry & Meghan documentary. Polo wasn't recommended to me either, I had to search to find it.

Like others my impression is that Netflix didn't love it. I doubt it will prove to be a success for them.

They can only be so 'personalised'. I too had the Harry and Meghan 'documentary' all over my NF recommendations, but not a word about this. NF clearly is not promoting it at all.

And I'm not sure what any supposed "antipathy towards H & M" has to do with it. Do NF know which members of the British royal family their subscribers admire or otherwise? And do they normally categorise programming on the basis of who executive produced it?

I'm 3 removes from Lord Alfred (Bosie) Douglas and thus 4 from Oscar Wilde. 3 from the last Tsar of Russia. It's fascinating stuff and when you get a "gateway" person like Michael Parkinson it does put immense amounts of famous people very close.

FloofPaws · 13/12/2024 08:26

I'm think Polo will turn even more people against them. It's yet another thing where they're trying to elevate themselves above people, ridiculous use of titles, lies about greatest love story ever, lies about racism/titles for the children/wedding,
The bullshit 'rent a crowd' security, wasting the British legal system time on his jealousy of not getting the same as his brother bollocks ... all trying to say I am entitled and I deserve XYZ /im better than everyone - and this is the straw that breaks the camels back I think - entitlement/boring entitled rich idiots/all of us here are better than everyone else - and above all the disgusting treatment of animals, absolutely disgusting people

I think it's more a reflection of the fact I mostly watch fantasy on Netflix and that they aren't pushing this documentary in the way they did Harry and Meghan, which to be fair was guaranteed a far larger audience.

Not sure why you think it's evidence of antipathy.

I doubt it will move the dial of people's opinions that much. They aren't main 'characters' in it from what I read so there won't be much for the papers to pick up and write articles about. Plus I don't think it's going to get the large amount of viewers needed to really bring it into public consciousness.

I agree, but then don’t marry into the RF if you don’t agree with a hereditary monarchy! She wanted to have the spoils but not have to abide by the rules. Breathtaking arrogance from the start.

My DD once sold him a shredder!

(The manageress of the shop warned her about his wandering hands. Many years before his arrest.)

Which makes the point the earlier OP was making, that there is a lot of knowledge out there in the public domain about public figures that comes from their interactions with us commoners.

Lifestooshort71 · 13/12/2024 09:13

The only reason I would watch Polo is if M&H were on the screen most of the time. As the years pass, I seem to be weirdly attracted to their ongoing journey to anonymity so would turn on to watch them dry paint if that was on offer. Weird, definitely.

Yes I'm surprised not to see it recommended to me.

I watched Harry & Meghan, I've watched a few of the Netflix sports documentaries, and I watch selling sunset and below deck, all which I think would suggest a sports show, exec produced by H&M, and featuring the luxury lives of the very wealthy should be top of my recommendations!

MinnieCauldwell · 13/12/2024 09:22

I think it could have worked; they should have interspersed the poshos with footage and interviews of all the stuff behind the scenes. Who are the groom's, what's entailed working with the ponies, do they travel abroad with them? That would have been interesting. Suspect they were not shown because PH and all the poshos barely notice they exist.

Sunblessed · 13/12/2024 10:11

These sports programmes rely on narratives of the underdog. That’s what we had with Wrexham and the F1 series. They should have followed a team, players, ponies that are the ‘losers’ and followed their journey. The Mighty Ducks of the Polo world.

Or

If they wanted to make a ‘dive into an unknown world’ docu series - then you give a much fuller look of all those who are part of the polo team; stable hands, drivers of the polo trucks, catering, farriers, vets, commentators, those who make the specialist polo equipment and kit, groundkeepers etc. Remember Airport and the Cruise on BBC decades ago? It was successful because we got to see all aspects and it was weirdly fascinating. Imagine the logistics of moving ponies around the world and all that entails. That would be interesting. Thing is, they had a man on the show whose business is transporting horses- so why not use that? Yet all we had was him shouting at his son from the polo field sidelines!!

The docu series they ended up making was The Real housewives of Polo. Just sad, dated and extremely sexist.

Nobody has to curtsy to the queen. She wasn't going to get hauled off to the Tower if she didn't bend the knee.

And yes, you could definitely make the argument that curtsying and bowing to people is ridiculous in this day and age. But then don't go around using your courtesy peerage titles every time you order a takeaway from Deliveroo.

Sunblessed · 13/12/2024 10:35

Meghan had no such qualms about people curtsying to her. It’s not as if her team put out a memo before her meet and greets, that curtsying wasn’t necessary. She seemed perfectly happy to play the hierarchical role of the Duchess. Yet pointedly refused to curtesy for Camilla and W&C

You either believe in it as a custom or you don’t.
