What exactly is "the Sussex Squad"?

Prydddan · 06/04/2024 14:56

I don't know whether this is too controversial a topic for such a thread to be allowed to stand. But I post in good faith on a topic I believe has a lot of social and political relevance.

Does the "Sussex Squad" actually exist? If so, how do you join? If not, do people ever identify as belonging to it?

If it exists, was it hijacked by SarahData and Bouzy or was it their creation? And, if so, to what extent?

Thanks in advance.

I find that the word "relatable" is usually used in slightly syrupy coverage in mags such as People, OK and Hello. Usually to try to draw a reader in to an article that's almost devoid of content.

Interesting, @LumiB . Have a read of my post yesterday at 16.50pm.
William visited a homeless project and the people there were very impressed with how informal and friendly he was. He spoke to every one of the homeless people, learning their stories and spent an hour longer than scheduled. They thought he was very sincere and relatable.
Perhaps in certain settings he's more comfortable. Perhaps he really wanted to help and support the homeless charity. Who knows.

There is always good and bad press someone said only gossip sites use the word relatable I just showed some reputable papers thay use the word regardless of whether it was a positive or negative slant.

Seems to be one must provide evidence to everything they say on here

Edited

Oh I see.
You're right about good and bad press. I personally don't rate either of those papers, but it's all subjective.

Gorgonemilezola · 11/04/2024 19:31

LumiB, how would you say someone is relatable? What do they do to make them so? Prince William usually comes across as engaged, interested, informed. He appears to have a sense of humour and is warm (but not tactile, hurrah) )in his interactions with people. What more would you like?

AliceOlive · 11/04/2024 19:32

I think the nature of discussion boards is that they attract many intelligent people with excellent critical thinking skills who do want credible evidence on which to base their opinions and the discussion itself. For me, that’s a positive!

AliceOlive · 11/04/2024 19:37

This headline about the BAFTAs is just click bait. If you watch the actual video he was very relatable.

I think there is some discussion online happening about the validity of taking a snap from a video and pretending it’s a photo.

As I said I posted the links to prove to someone that established media do use the word relatable

That was me - and I posted that I find it's usually used in a certain type of publication.

That's not the same as saying it's never been used elsewhere, and my apologies that that wasn't clear enough. I never meant for it to be a cut and dried "only ever in one type" statement, rather that that is where it is most often used. It's also fairly common in the tabloids, usually for trivia (homework, make up, DC's favourite food etc)

ForIAmAStalwartOfTheseThreads · 11/04/2024 20:25

This is what we are coming to now? Criticising William for not posing properly when meeting people?

Perhaps he is more interested in acting naturally with people instead of looking for the nearest camera lens.

You know? Like a normal person.

AliceOlive · 11/04/2024 20:25

The telegraph article you linked @LumiB reminded me about the constant criticism of the commonwealth tour. I recently read this was also part of the Sussex squad tactics. I can’t that surprised me, in retrospect.

Well define intelligence? How do you determine a poster has the right level? Is it because they link to credible evidence? Is it because they never speculate or voice an opinion only facts backed up by links.

And what criteria is there for excellent critical thinking skills.

Who has decided this?

Otherwise I find it the whole I'm more intelligent than you personal attacks really nasty.

I don't think Charles idea of a slimmed down monarchy was a good idea and recent events really expose the risks of this.

Au contraire I think the floating of an idea of a slimmed down monarchy was absolute genius.

Unfortunately so far it seems to boil down to a forced reduction of boots on the ground via scandal and flouncing while retaining an iron grip on the incoming moolah.

Devonisheaven · 11/04/2024 21:06

What a nasty little article that was in the Guardian though I expect nothing less from that rag.

Isn't it? I used to really like the Guardian, I just don't know what happened to their standards of journalism. Or literacy.

A nasty little article and a nasty thing to choose to post.

I too used to be ok with the Guardian.

I don’t know who they cater for now but it isn’t me.

Well Meghan and Harry are apparently doing a Netflix series on Polo, that relatable sport for the common man.

Not exclusively scandal and flouncing. Cancer and treatment of seem to be assisting scandal and flouncing.

(I enjoy the scandal and flouncing). Luckily there’s bound to be more where that came from! They’ll never be able to keep their traps shut.

I wonder what Henry will have to say about the approved and cruelty free spurs that resulted in his pony's visible injuries.

ForIAmAStalwartOfTheseThreads · 11/04/2024 21:43

A cooking programme too?

We have already had a Fanny cooking programme.

No need for another.

Agreed.

Illness another completely unforeseen factor.

A short sighted puff strategy that's unravelled with more speed than expected or anticipated.

I wasn't posting it because of what it said I was posting it to respond to the poster who said they find the word relatable is usually by gossip rags and I provided two examples where newspapers had.

Vespanest · 11/04/2024 22:05

what I can’t get my head around is that the majority of those who align themselves with the Sussex squad is they can’t be arsed to promote what H and M do now, it is pure hatred for mainly Kate, the racist allegations will always haunt her, while Harry reassures himself with “it wasn’t me who said it”. Harry knows exactly what he did and they honestly don’t give a shit. Twitter is pretty awful tonight on Kate but the result will be that Meghan will be dragged while Harry strokes his ego. They don’t seem to learn they cannot escape the negativity because Harry fuelled it to begin with.
