Photography hobbyists and aficionados unite.

Welcome to the thread where you can display and discuss some of the most iconic photos captured by some of the most talented photographers.

These aren't your average Instagram photos. Oh no. These are the ones that live in your head rent free. The Marie Kondo of photos that spark joy. Where everything in the photo is perfection.

This thread is meant to be fun, light-hearted, and showcase the talents of those behind the lens.

Please do not derail, and do not use this thread to be snarky or have a dig about subjects you don't like, or to other posters. If you cannot keep in the spirit of the thread, then please don't participate or spoil it for others.

Diana's wedding dress is absolutely stunning in real life. I saw it in an exhibition and it was quite plain when compared to some of the dresses you see on programs like 'say yes to the dress'.

There were 2 issues: one was the creasing, two was the dress seemed to overwhelm her. Maybe with a shorter train, slightly less puffy sleeves and a bit of the confidence Diana showed later on, it would have worked better.

Why could she not marry him and stay a royal?

As the pp said, because he was divorced.

Same as her uncle, Edward VIII, the feeling was at
the time that a royal marrying outwith the Church of England wasn’t acceptable, unless they were to give up their position and she couldn’t marry a divorcee in the CofE.

I’ve always found this one fascinating.
9 kings at the funeral of Edward VII.

Some of them were closely related and look very alike.

4 were disposed and one assassinated.

Too much inter breeding! That is a fascinating photo. None of them look very approachable!

I've always liked these two - taken by Annie Leibovitz

The one with the gt grandchildren and the Wessex grandchildren is like a painting. The one with Princess Anne is very natural and quite unusual to see them in an ' off duty' mother and daughter relaxed pose.

I remember the one on the right. It’s my absolute fav of the late Queen with her great grandchildren, especially the little one holding the bag. She’s painfully adorable 🥰

I wonder what Camilla thinks when (if) she sees some of the photos of Charles and Diana looking happy or gazing lovingly at each other.

Huh? Camilla was married to andrew. And the affair stopped for some considerable time. I’m sure like any second spouse she realises the marriage was happy at times.

I've never seen that before- is it a fake?

No, it was a hologram. If you google Queen Elizabeth hologram, you can find the making of video which is interesting.

Had to google it as I wondered who they were:

The Nine Sovereigns at Windsor for the funeral of King Edward VII.
Standing, from left to right:
King Haakon VII of Norway, Tsar Ferdinand of Bulgaria, King Manuel II of Portugal, Kaiser Wilhelm II of the German Empire, King George I of Greece and King Albert I of Belgium.
Seated, from left to right:
King Alfonso XIII of Spain, King-Emperor George V of the United Kingdom and King Frederick VIII of Denmark.

Rather interestingly (I knew this about Queen Victoria):

The royal descendants of Queen Victoria and of King Christian IX, monarchs of the United Kingdom (1837–1901) and Denmark (1863–1906) respectively, currently occupy the thrones of Belgium, Denmark, Luxembourg, Norway, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom.
At the outbreak of the First World War their grandchildren occupied the thrones of Denmark, Greece, Norway, Germany, Romania, Russia, Spain and the United Kingdom.
For this reason Victoria was nicknamed the "grandmother of Europe" and Christian IX the "father-in-law of Europe".

Two of the sovereigns in that photo, Frederik VIII and George I are brothers, and Haakon is Frederik’s son. And of course Frederik and George’s sister was Queen Alexandra so Haakon and George V were first cousins. As were George and Wilhelm II. The one missing is Tsar Nicholas II, also a cousin!

Diana’s dress encapsulates a moment in time. She looked like she set herself a brief to look like the quintessential fairytale princess. Huge 1980s overblown extravagance. She was so, so young. It always struck me how she stuck with understated hair and makeup too.
Of course now it looks hugely dated.

Wonderful photos

Another of the lovely Catherine.

I adored Diana's wedding dress!

I was 10 or 11 i think and watching the TV with my mum. When Diana and all that creamy white dress spilled out of the carriage i was awe struck. My mother humphed. But then she hated Diana from the start.

Laiste · 09/03/2024 10:25

I love Kate. She has a wonderful smile, but when she's not smiling her face shows there could be quite a pretty strong steely determination about her. Something you need to withstand that role i think.

ArcaneWireless · 09/03/2024 10:41

I like that bit of steel. I absolute agree it is something that will have been a gift to have in the role.

I believe you grow your steel through life’s experiences. I like the strength in that last photo.

I think she just has resting bitch face, and, because she’s in the public eye so much in situations where the appropriate expression isn’t ‘Fuck off’, she’s had to fight her natural expression, and the result is that face.

Fabulous photos

The first time.i went to the National Gallery and saw this at age 10 I guess, I was just so completely gobsmacked and I froze. The power of it still makes me stop in the gallery.

It's absolutely heartbreaking and mesmerising , I couldn't take my eyes off it .

Willmafrockfit · 09/03/2024 11:01

Queen Victoria was amazing in that respect

She was amazing in lots of respects.
I always think it's a pity when people stereotype her as a rather austere figure of fun. I find her life fascinating. She had a lot to put up with - including giving birth to 9 children!

ChVrches · 09/03/2024 12:02

I've seen one of Queen Victoria's vests in a museum once. She seemingly had hundreds of them. I also saw her wedding dress in London several years ago and it was so small.

That's all true and none of it stops me from still wondering what Camilla thinks when she sees pics of Charles and Diana.

It's interesting that previous posts have commented on Kate's 'hidden steel'. When a bride was being sought for Queen Victoria's eldest son, the future Edward VII, Queen Victoria specified that the right candidate had to be a woman who wouldn't 'knock under' ie. had to have great hidden strength. I think all royal brides have to have that quality to survive.

AnnunciataM · 09/03/2024 12:23

Alexandra certainly had to be resilient - Edward’s infidelities, her deafness (in a world that was built even less for disabled people than it is now), losing a child.

that’s also one of the reasons she still felt Mary should be the future Queen and said that her grandson, later George V, should propose to his later brother’s fiancée
