Queen Margrethe 2nd of Denmark Abdication

I have just read the queens New Year speech (I am Danish living in the UK) and the queen will abdicate on the 14th January 52 years after her ascending the throne.

I am very moved. She is the only queen I remember of Denmark and currently the only reigning female Monarch. This will change as the next generations come through but not in Denmark where the next 2 are male.

Re Mary putting up with Fred's philandering in order to be Queen and in order to have charge over her children.
Gilded cage is right ! Sad

When Mary married Fred, she gave up her British and Australian passports, converted to Lutheranism and signed a document saying that in the event of a divorce, her husband would get custody of the children and they would have to be resident in Denmark.

I think Mary has been fully committed to this from day one. If Fred is cheating, and it's hard to explain the Madrid photos any other way, I think she'll put up with it in order to be queen. She certainly won't be the first, or the last, royal wife to do so.

Blimey. They didn’t get married they quickly though did they so presumably like our very own Kate she is all in, for life. Except that unlike Kate she’s a million miles from home.

actually thinking about it the eldest is 18 and the youngest are 12ish aren’t they so it’s not that long to wait if she has to make her great escape I suppose

Mary was Ms average in Sydney 23 years ago. She had a law degree but was working for a real estate company so was not using it. She was already a plane ride away from her family in Tasmania and her mother had passed away a few years earlier.

And then she met Fred. Various internet rumours say she knew who the royal men in the pub were and was after Felipe at first. And that Fred already had a girlfriend so he cheated on her with Mary. Whatever the circumstances I can believe that she liked him and his money / title and it offered her a much brighter future than she could otherwise expect.

She signed away a lot by marrying him but in return she is somewhat globally famous, has multiple palaces at her disposal and clothes and jewels most of us can only wish for. i think given how much she spends those material things are important to her. But I think he has always liked to let his hair down more than work (she outworks him) and I can't read Madrid any other way than him cheating.

I think she might have got to the point of wondering if it was all worth it and Margarethe - not wanting another divorce in her sons and the soon to be king no less - locked Mary in by quickly abdicating. King Fred won't be able to slip his security detail and go to Madrid like Crown Prince Fred could. And Queen Mary will have even more global attention and material things and so many palaces she can avoid Fred whenever she wants. It really is a gilded cage now.

Surely Denmark is her home? She's lived there nearly 2 decades, is a Danish citizen and her children were born there.

I can't see her running back to Oz any time soon. Apart from the kids, as Queen of Denmark she has a status there, and internationally, that she'd never have if she divorced. If rumours are to be believed, Madrid was by no means the first time Fred has cheated. Just the first time he got so blatantly caught. So she knows the deal. Women have put up with errant spouses for a lot less than a crown, international fame, and your choice of palaces.
