Queen Margrethe 2nd of Denmark Abdication

I have just read the queens New Year speech (I am Danish living in the UK) and the queen will abdicate on the 14th January 52 years after her ascending the throne.

I am very moved. She is the only queen I remember of Denmark and currently the only reigning female Monarch. This will change as the next generations come through but not in Denmark where the next 2 are male.

I hadn't realised she was the last reigning queen in the world!

There are quite a few on the horizon, however: Sweden, Belgium, Spain, the Netherlands, and eventually Norway.

Didn’t Mary have an affair too?
Maybe Queen Margretha thinks it will deflect the attention away from their private lives?

Did Mary have an affair ?

Maireas · 01/01/2024 14:58

I have read that, @LadyEloise1

SparklyOwls · 01/01/2024 15:42

Why did she strip the titles of her grandchildren? Seemed a bit mean.

@Enko How do you think the Danish public feel about Fred & Mary overall? Are they generally well liked?

They are very well liked. Even people who are anti royals are anti institution, it's never personal. You don't hear or read the same vitriol that you do in the UK.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 01/01/2024 15:51

To slim the monarchy down, much like what happens in the brf.

quantumbutterfly · 01/01/2024 15:51

How meaningful is a title? They will still live with great privilege and opportunity.

Some titles can be a burden I'm sure. Though many scions of defunct royal families seem to cling to theirs.

Do you treat someone differently because they have a title, and if so why?

Maireas · 01/01/2024 15:55

Titles open a lot of doors, even in this day and age. They really do confer significant status.

WhyMeWhyNowWhyNot · 01/01/2024 15:58

There is not a snowflake’s chance in hell that spaniel will abdicate - I can’t believe anyone is seriously suggesting it! He waited 73 YEARS to get his hands on the top job - he’ll leave when he dies, no other way.

Indeed, If only they could be more often earned rather than inherited.

Which title impresses you more, Lord or Dr?

Eh? What a weird question ⁉️

Maireas · 01/01/2024 16:03

I think that Joachim was unhappy with his mother's decisions re titles. To remove them rather than never be granted them probably hurts a bit more.

It has an excellent education system, quantumbutterfly, and tuition's free at university too, but even Denmark has its elitist private schools which the wealthy try to get their kids into

I thought all Frederick and Mary's dc went to the local state school?

I heard that somewhere too. A vote of confidence for state education?

Can you imagine that happening in the UK? (rhetorical question obv.)

Libertyy · 01/01/2024 16:11

I would love to be a fly on the wall of the BRF’s mansion to see their reaction to her abdication

If our Monarchy wants to flourish, Charles should abdicate at 80 and go and tend his garden at Highgrove with Cam down the road in Wiltshire.

William will be 46, perfect age to take over, ditto Catherine. They can't keep using the excuse 'oh, but the children'. The children will be protected and cosseted and William can get on with reforming the Monarchy and making it more relevant, as opposed to an unequal archaic institution.

Then W&K can do the same in 20-25 years when George will be nearly 40. So W&K have an easy life now and will have the same at age late sixties.

It will keep the Monarchy young and fresh because it ain't that at the moment.

Superb post, Roussette - all I can add is "if only" Wink

Apparently so, EmmaGrundyForPM - or at least they did for elementary school

if Charles waited until Prince George was 18 which is in summer 2031( so the new heir is an adult like Danish Queen has) the King would be 82, if he waits until Louis is 18 in 2036 he would be 87. While I think abdication is unlikely it is very very unlikely before George is 18. Personally I think if King Charles decided to do 10-12 years then that would be a good point to hand over.

Libertyy · 01/01/2024 16:44

We should do the same, pull the Wales’ kids out of private schools and educate them in the state schools. Do the same with the politicians kids and watch how quickly our education system improves when it affects their kids

DuchessOfPort · 01/01/2024 17:08

I think another reason our monarchs are unlikely to abdicate is because being PoW or another lower ranking working royal is considerably easier in terms of personal freedoms than being the King or Queen Regnant. I think Charles was gifted his ability to share his views on various things for 40 years because the Queen gritted her teeth and did her duty and he has to shut up now, do as he’s told as the civil servant he is; open the red box 364 days a year etc and he will try really hard to preserve William’s life the same way.

I would be entirely happy if they all got to call it quits at 85 or whatever and retire and be allowed to be arthritic and fall asleep in the afternoon, have cancer treatment etc - like anyone else of their ages. The Danish Queen deserves a break too!

It would have as much impact as it did when Tony Blair and David Cameron’s kids went to state school when they were in downing at - absolutely none because they’ll go to state schools that are almost selective because of location

Those schools were not what I meant. Put them in working class state schools
