George's exams

Kate is not going with william to Singapore as George has important exams. What exams would a 10 year old be sitting in November?
I know nothing about private school systems so hoping someone here does.

@AuroraCake

"they don't teacher there any more" ?

everetting · 08/10/2023 08:51

A high proportion of the top 5% of earners still send their kids to share school. So that tells you nothing.

I grew up in in Somerset, and the terrace of council houses in the village had a paddock behind them where some of the residents kept ponies.

There are also council farms all over the country although I think they are being sold off so there aren’t as many now as in the 90s

But to your point that only racing can take a working class kid through the ranks, that’s absolute nonsense. Not least because the vast vast majority of work riders don’t get to ever race

The same opportunities exist in all equestrian disciplines and very few top riders are riding horses they own

And what a tangent you’ve taken this thread off on!

We went on a city break to Lincoln earlier in the year. They have peoples horses grazing on the Common land on the outskirts of the city.

Share school?
To learn about the stock market?

Serenster · 08/10/2023 09:22

If one of my kids was a talented rider, not only could I not afford to pay for them to pursue their ambition, I would have no idea how they could

Have you really never heard of The Pony Club?

AuroraCake · 08/10/2023 09:27

In the UK, 3 day eventers tend to be monies. However you can get sponsorship etc. That Zara had financial support as well as lineage for her career is really not something to be held against her. She has talent. Loads of people have even more money support aren't half as talented. Athina Onasis springs to mind. As does Charlotte Casiraghi. All perfectly good at it (show jumping in both cases I think) but not the talent. Zara may even be better than her father.

Now you mention it I read about this as a child in children's books.

Honestly it is ridiculous to say that competing seriously in horse riding is not the preserve of the well off in England.
Lots if people on MN seem out of touch.
My family have a median household income. 33k earnings plus child benefit for two children. We are totally average in terms of income, not entitled to universal credit or benefits. And a career in horse riding would be way out of our budget to fund.

Honestly it is ridiculous to say that competing seriously in horse riding is not the preserve of the well off in England it’s really not , maybe you have the wrong perception of how it really works.
You don’t need to own a horse to compete, sponsors and teams hire riders all the time ,or are on part time or full time pay, there is always a tournament going on somewhere , so being employed full time is actually much cheaper for team owners .
they do start really low and work their way up, looking after horses ;with the benefit of riding horses and improving their riding.

I can't believe you think that there is total equality as far as this is concerned. Where I live, I know different.

queenofarles · 08/10/2023 16:56

I’m sorry Rousette perhaps where you live is different , but as someone who has first hand experience i know its not, and I can go on and on trying to explain it , but I really see it pointless .

We will have to agree to disagree won't we?!
I would say more but it's far too identifying for me

I can't believe anyone would think it's all equal and anyone could enter the Olympics!

If Zara was Janice Smith who lives in Swindon but liked horses.... she would hardly have had Zara's opportunities and open doors. Her mother did it before her, she would have access to the very best horses in the country.

But if her father had married someone else, there's still a good chance that their DC could have ended up where she did. He was neither particularly posh, nor particularly rich but won Olympic gold, and was (like Zara) both World and European champion.

I grew up in small market town, and horsey people were definitely not all posh. One local boy - who learned to ride on the same pony as I did - ended up reasonably successful on the show-jumping circuit. No racing stables nearby though - and that's where the money is, but jockeys don't tend to come from moneyed backgrounds, just horse-mad ones.

Howsimplywonderful · 08/10/2023 17:56

No amount of money guarantees the grit and determination required to win.

Great coaching and parental support/experience and viable mentors to look up to are essential.

people who don’t have monied backgrounds have to work harder, no one is denying that, but it’s so easy to dismiss a lack of success to ‘money’ when that is not the only reason.

derxa · 08/10/2023 18:10

Of all the members of the RF to stick the boot into!! Zara promotes a coat called Windsor Wine... big bloody deal. Let's have Gatcombe Green and Balmoral Blue as well. We've rerun this argument about Zara's achievements time and time again. What she has done is phenomenal. Then Kate is berated for not being a CEO of a major company in her spare time.

wordler · 08/10/2023 18:13

I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that someone with both financial means above and beyond your average middle class family PLUS connections to your chosen career, hobby, field of interest gives you a significant advantage no matter what you want to do.

But skill, hard work and focus are needed no matter what you have to be genuinely successful in skilled fields like sports etc.

I actually do think you can succeed in riding related careers without the financial background if you have lots of enthusiasm and work hard to make it happen.

But I’d suggest that those success stories happen when the young person is lucky enough to have the right exposure and environment early enough to develop the focus needed to succeed.

So the average child in the suburbs isn’t going to have the family means to get enough exposure to something like riding to know if they have spark of talent and to encourage their interest.

In more rural areas with lots of kids from
farming communities around, and social clubs more centered around the pony club or young farmers etc then working class and middle class kids can access riding opportunities and connections more easily to help develop the passion needed to succeed without big financial resources. I grew up in a very small market town in the north which was like this.

What has she done? Do you mean her Olympic career? If so, yes, she is very talented. As was her mother.

Or am I missing something else?

I don't agree on the Windsor Wine nonsense but there you go, you know I wouldn't. AFAIC it's cashing in on her royal privilege.

derxa · 08/10/2023 18:22

But skill, hard work and focus are needed no matter what you have to be genuinely successful in skilled fields like sports etc. I can think of Andy Murray, David Beckham, the Williams sisters starting at a very young age with a driven parent behind them. Constant practice. But if they didn't have any talent it would all have been for nothing.

queenofarles · 08/10/2023 18:32

your free to hate the person or the establishment but don’t Denigrate the profession some have chosen.
Zara has one three medals in the world champions , a gold and two silver ,
and believe me no amount of linage can make you win one of these , specially when you are competing against the very best in the world.

Roussette · 08/10/2023 18:48

Totally confused. Who is denigrating Zara's achievements? I can't see it on this thread.
Certainly not from me. I have already said she is extremely talented, she would not have won all those medals without being so.

I just think some posters see criticism where there isn't any.
