The lack of enthusiasm for the Coronation

I know this is shallow but I think part of the reason why people aren't enthusiastic about Charles’ coronation is that neither he nor Camilla have movie star good looks plus they're both in their 70s. I bet if both were in their 30s or even 40s, and Charles looked like Pierce Brosnan and Camilla looked like Angelina Jolie, they would have the world fawning over them and their Coronation.

You are wrong. They are not a Republican paper, they simply are happy to publish critical articles about the Royals.
Do you not know what people have been arrested for? A lawyer was detained for holding up a blank piece of paper. Today a group of protestors walking to the protest with banners were arrested for no reason.

Of course it's republican. This was its editorial after the queen died.

Who is the head of state does matter. Birthright is not the right way to choose one. (...) But MPs should not bend the knee before inheritance and rank. Modern Britain has little need for trappings and privileges that belong to another age.

AskMeMore · 06/05/2023 20:59

@Boudicasbeard I have watched the footage linked to on twitter. It is Royalists who are spreading lies about why they were arrested. They were peaceful. They were transporting banners to the protest in Trafalgar Square. That got them arrested.

@Kebabie Good point about the social
media videos. I’ve seen a few floating around online where the protester was obviously looking for a reaction and didn’t get one.

Protesting doesn’t have to be violent or agressive. The most successful ones aren’t either.

It seems like the majority were peaceful and its always a shame when some self centred attention seekers care more about validation from strangers online than they do about the cause and the others protesting alongside them.

AskMeMore · 06/05/2023 21:00

It is now illegal to protest against the Monarchy peacefully if the police decide it is.
Dissent not allowed.

That's hyperbole and you well know it. This kind of thing ruins actual debate and discussion.

Boudicasbeard · 06/05/2023 20:54

@Roussette No one is saying ‘don’t debate’. Have the debate. Questions are good. But debate with the objective facts rather than what people wish was true. Claiming that turnout was poor for today makes the person saying it look dishonest and stupid. Not a great position to be holding when you are trying to debate.

This can be an emotive topic. But everyone should get to have their opinion- in fact they do. Disagreement is often good for people.

I've not claimed anything about turnout.

There was a point I thought it was sparse and people could arrive and see what they wanted, but I have no idea, I don't monitor turnout.

And turnout is absolutely nothing to do with being able to debate and protest against a monarchy if a person wants to.

The Met say is was suspected breach of the peace. Who knows at this point- neither you nor I were actually there.

Anyhoo- I generally dislike the tone of this board these days because I hate being called a boot licker (actually what someone posted on a thread today) and feel that very few of the regular anti-monarchist posters have an open mind about the issue. And I detest the close minded and judgemental.

AskMeMore · 06/05/2023 21:03

It is not hyperbole. Do you know nothing about the new law Charles just signed assent for?

Roussette · 06/05/2023 21:04

I feel exactly the same about the other side of the argument. I've been told to go to Russia if I don't like the Monarchy!

Not joking.

Boudicasbeard · 06/05/2023 21:05

@Roussette Do you speak in anything but hyperbole?

And I wasn’t talking about you. Another poster waaaay up thread asserted that the crowd was small. Cognitive Dissonance in action.

No I'm super ignorant as I'm not all fuck the police.

Swansandcustard · 06/05/2023 21:05

Op, are you allowed to vote?

I would hope most of us operate on slightly deeper principles than what they look like.

The economy is tanking.
The number in poverty is rocketing
people in well paying jobs are only keeping heads above water
There are wars and genocide across the world
The climate is in peril

i really do struggle to get enthusiastic about a bunch of over-privileged, tax-avoiding leeches having yet another eye-wateringly expensive weekend of frolics at my expense.

That's ridiculous. 32 people were arrested on conspiracy to cause a public nuisance and most of those were the just stop oil protectors. That means about 10 people, arrested from the anti monarchy group. If that's all dissent stopped, there wasn't that much dissent to start with. 🙄

You stated something. I answered. That's the nature of a discussion forum

Boudicasbeard · 06/05/2023 21:07

@AskMeMore Do you actually
know anything about how laws are passed in this country? In a constitutional monarchy the crown cannot refuse to give assent to new laws without causing a constitutional crisis. If you want to blame anyone for the heavy handed new protest laws then look to our despised government.

What in it do you find problematic?

Personally I think people blocking roads or attaching themselves to things is disruptive and affects fellow citizens rather than anyone else. I don't have an issue with police having the powers to search people they suspect of preparing to cause disruption; if you're passionate about your cause then it's either a price worth paying or you remain peaceful? My friend missed saying goodbye to her dying father because of some selfish idiots gluing themselves to the road- most of whom turn out to be hypocrites anyway.

The Monarch can tweak the laws. To benefit themselves. And has done in the past.

Sudeko · 06/05/2023 21:09

Were Just Stop Oil present to stop the anointing behind the screens? 😂

AskMeMore · 06/05/2023 21:09

The organisers of the protest were arrested. It is an easy way to make protests less effective. And arrests scare other from being involved. That is why they were arrested.

AskMeMore · 06/05/2023 21:11

The Monarchy have successfully changed hundreds of laws to benefit themselves.

@Roussette

No, they can. Bills have to pass through the commons, then the lords, then the commons again before they get royal assent. Monarch can work with the government if there is an issue of importance to them. But they can’t just change laws that have been scrutinised by both houses- the opposition at least would be in instant uproar.

Boudicasbeard · 06/05/2023 21:16

Sorry, no they can’t

Namechange828492 · 06/05/2023 21:17

I think a lot of people see him as a temporary King,

AskMeMore · 06/05/2023 21:17

Yes they can. It was kept secret for a long time. The Royal Family are exempt from all kinds of laws from the equality act to health and safety laws to wildlife protection.
Maybe you should do a bit more reading on this as you only seem to know the propoganda and not what actually happens.
