People Excited About Coronation: How Hard Are You Going?

tigger2022 · 01/05/2023 21:48

Thought it might be nice to have a thread for people who are looking forward to the coronation! I know some feel more cynical but we have loads of threads that always descend into slagging off Kate, so I thought the unapologetic optimists should have a safe space too 😂

So… how hard are you going?

I have actually bought the 6mo baby a coronation costume 😁😂

I'm in! Got three different types of bunting, some chocolate Charles' and afternoon tea menu is planned. Only doing Saturday, so it's up early to get the teas sorted and then I'm on the sofa with a bottle of fizz. Like a pp said, I'll be toasting my mum who would have loved this.

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 02/05/2023 11:55

If my mum was still with me (she's in a nursing home) I would be rearranging the furniture in her living room and would probably invite a friend to join us as well. I am not planning on setting the alarm for Saturday morning but may well be up around 8 ish to watch everything.

LadyJ2023 · 02/05/2023 12:16

Nah our family not bothered lol

HaggisBurger · 02/05/2023 12:24

Will be likely hungover from dinner party the night before (actually just had a thought - buy Charles and Camilla Facemasks to entertain the two very unroyalist couples coming).
So a bottle of cremant or champagne to make Buck’s Fizz while we watch. DP and I both love the pomp and history of all things royal which I love. We should see a bit of the fly past from here too.

I’m from a background that would NOT be associated with loving royalty traditionally - but I really do. I think it’s to do with being an 80s kid and the royal wedding. Love it all and wish them well.
Like a PP got the M&S commemorative shortbread tin to match my blue Platinum jubilee one 😢

@HaggisBurger LOL I love the idea of the C&C masks!! I wish I had time to have some sent over now!

Kudos on the cremant idea, btw, I tried some for the first time literally 5 days ago and wondered where it had been all my life...

MayQueeen · 02/05/2023 19:52

Really enjoying reading all these! Not really a royalist but it’s nice to have something to look forward to - and after so many grey days, we could do with a little pomp!

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 02/05/2023 20:00

I've got Danish PILs coming over for afternoon tea. Going full British:
Coronation quiche
Prawn and cucumber sandwiches
Chicken, basil and lemon sandwiches/rolls.
Welsh cakes.
Millionaires shortbread.
M&S shortbread if we haven't eaten it all.

Have bought mini flags on cocktail sticks and have invested in a cake stand! Have got a biscuit tin from M&S (they do such lovely merch) and will be getting a badge for my camp blanket.

Not actually bothered by the coronation, but want to share it with DD who isn't British.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 02/05/2023 20:01

Should I do Pimms?

SerenadeOfTheSchoolRun · 02/05/2023 21:41

I am going to parkrun first (wearing my Union Jack deeply boppers) but rushing back for tv watching with the family (my parents are coming over). I have put bunting up and have coronation napkins and a Union Jack T-shirt to wear. I will make the quiche on the Friday and buy some easy things to put in the oven for lunch. Don’t want to spend time cooking when I could be watching the parades. I might print out the order or service but it is 34 pages long so not sure about that.

Pimms sounds good - might join you with that 😀

IncessantNameChanger · 02/05/2023 21:46

Me and kids have an outfit to wear ( Asda dress, primark t shirt so unfortunately not recreating an Ascot worthy outfit). Bought a throw, some cushions, teapot, cup and saucers and a plate from Tesco so I'm going for it! Naff maybe but I love it. Can't wait. Like a wedding I wasn't invited to 😁

SerenadeOfTheSchoolRun · 02/05/2023 21:52

I have also bought a biscuit tin for a memento.

CoolShoeshine · 02/05/2023 22:20

I wasn’t particularly excited until I drove home tonight and went down a street with lovely big old houses which had massive union jacks hanging from their upstairs windows, and lots of bunting down the street. It made me suddenly want to join in and decorate my own house!

Ethelswith · 03/05/2023 11:06

I've just ordered the Royal Top Trumps!

I've got tea towels (always get a tea towel!) and a posh mug for my DMum (in her 90s and who has an extensive collection already, going back to George VI) plus a more useable mug for me.

There's bunting up along the nearby shopping street, and estate agents sign boards (in a few places - I'm in a city) advertising street parties

AuntieStella · 03/05/2023 11:09

What time do you reckon you need to be parked in front of the telly?

I was wondering about parkrun (I have purple union flag jubilee skorts which I'd wear rather than buying Yet More Kit) but I'll be at a family get together so would have to drive to one, and am just thinking about timings

Sudeko · 03/05/2023 11:11

Will it all be taken down by Tuesday? I need to drive through there on Tuesday and hoping there will be no lingering crowds or barricades still in place.

IntheHillsofMarmilla · 03/05/2023 11:28

I live in a fairly small village. For the Platinum Jubilee everyone seemed to go all out with bunting, flags etc. I left it last minute and could only get some quite nasty plastic stuff. Heading into the Coronation, I was prepared. Ordered lovely vintage style cloth bunting and flags. Up it all went on Sunday.

To my mortification we seem to the one of the only people in the village this time. Did I miss some memo or something? Is anyone else seeing flags and bunting?

Concerned neighbours will think we are some kind of extreme royalists, which is not the case.

Notasyoungasiwas · 03/05/2023 11:35

I'm really excited for the coronation - despite most people at work trying to put a downer on it! We are having the whole family round for a lunchtime coronation buffet (yes, including coronation chicken) and some bottles of fizz 🍾

Notasyoungasiwas · 03/05/2023 11:36

And we're having a quiz! 😀

PollyPeptide · 03/05/2023 11:41

I've got myself a t shirt with a sequinned union jack on it. We're going to my mums care home for the coronation. Then we're off for afternoon tea at a friend's. Then onto the green for the lighting of a beacon.
Then on Sunday it's cake and prosecco on the green and an afternoon picnic.
And a garden party on the Monday - if I have the energy.
I'm so looking forward to it all.

Emily102 · 03/05/2023 12:15

Our village is having a watching party at the Village Hall with cake, Champagne, Pimms and Tea. Then the pub is having a party on the evening. The next day there is a big street party and everyone has been assigned things to bring (if they signed up.) Then on Monday there is a village litter pick (which already happens monthly.)

It is a small village, and it looks like about 80% of people will be there (most the others are away), according to the sign ups for the Sunday. Hearing similar numbers from surrounding villages too. Definitely lots of excitement around here, and from all age groups.

My husband is making Quesadillas and Enchiladas for the Street Party (he is not British, but is really excited for the Coronation.) I am making Jam Roly Poly, Victoria Sponge and bringing a cheese board. Others are making/bringing pork pies, picnic foods, some are roasting beef and chicken etc.

Timetable is below.

I am parkrunning 15 mins away from home - hoping to be back by 10 not having missed too much. It will be good to join the festivities at parkrun too.

7:15am: Westminster Abbey guests will begin arriving at security checkpoints in Victoria Tower Gardens.
9am: The congregation will be seated inside Westminster Abbey.
9:30am-10:45am: Coronation guests, including the royal family, heads of state and former prime ministers are scheduled to arrive.
9:45am: The Sovereign's Escort of the Household Cavalry will prepare to assemble for the King's Procession from Buckingham Palace.
10:20am: The King and Queen will travel from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey in the Diamond Jubilee State Coach.
11am: The main event, the coronation, will take place.
1pm: The coronation procession is expected to begin as the royals return from Westminster Abbey to Buckingham Palace, with almost 4,000 military personnel expected to be involved.
1:45pm: The Royal Salute will see the King and Queen be saluted on the West Terrace of Buckingham Palace's garden, after which the military personnel present will give three cheers.
2:15pm: 15 members of the royal family will gather on the balcony of Buckingham Palace for the fly-past which will pay homage to Charles and Camilla

Reason no. 1,527 why I am gad I’m not a senior royal - imagine how early you’d need to get up to get your glam squad to work on you if you need to be at Buckingham Palace and coronation-ready for just after 9am. 🤣

I’m exhausted even thinking about it. Bless them.

Didn’t realise people were interested? We’re in Canada - no merch, no one discussing it. I imagine the highlights will be shown.
