What do you want as head of state for the UK

We are a mixed bag of pro and anti-monarchy on here so I've created a little poll to see at a glance were we stand:

https://poll-maker.com/Q72KOF2ZL

I've added a Something Else option as I ran out of what I thought were all the possibilities.

It's anonymous but feel free to expand in the comments.

What would you like the UK's head of state to be?

  1. Solve the housing crisis both short and long term- there are prebuild houses that can be made quickly and easily
  2. Relax laws around protesting and invasion of rights
  3. Sort out the NHS:- streamline, get one centralised computer system in place
  4. MP’s not to line their own pockets and to be transparent about who is paying them to say what to whom.
  5. Clamp down on negativity and fake news in the press. Make hate fuelled reporting and clickbait so unattractive to media sources that they stop.
  6. Unite everyone, bring them together as a community, celebrate the diverse, but incredible nation we are Instead of dividing us. See above post.
  7. Grow vegetables and fruit that is free to all in community based ventures. Let people help to grow them.
  8. Take the unrealistic demands off teachers. They are leaving because of this. Tackle bullying quickly and effectively.
  9. Get rid of certain spyware apps.

Sad to see no option for Ed the Duck.

The survey is still in favour of the status quo - a strong 80%

Meaningless

Novella4 · 18/04/2023 08:55

And btw @KnittedCardi
It's for worse !

The Windsors are well known yes but well known for corruption and nefarious crimes
Even when the queen was here ( she did a good job of pretending to be unaware) the UK was slidding down the international rankings
Now we are in free fall - how exactly does the fact that Andrew , chuck and Camilla etc are infamous help us ?

Surely the question should be binary do you want the monarchy to continue or not ? Then if the decision is taken to abandon them then consultation can begin on democratic alternatives. You seem to be diluting the opposition with confusing options.

This

KleineDracheKokosnuss · 18/04/2023 08:59

I dont really understand why there has to be a head of state. I dont really get it to be honest

this. And if it’s so important to have one, I suggest we have a cat or a dog for the role. Cute pics, unlikely to cause major issues.

Novella4 · 18/04/2023 09:00

How many have responded ?

I'm sorry OP but the security on your link didn't sound great esp re IP addresses so I didn't click on it

Blossomtoes · 18/04/2023 09:00

rattymol · 18/04/2023 08:57

This

Don’t be ridiculous. Not only is there virtually no opposition to dilute but it’s really not difficult to combine the votes for the republican options. You’d have to be a bear of very little brain to find the options confusing.

rattymol · 18/04/2023 09:02

It would be easy to have an appointment system. Make it a paid job. That way we don't get someone who thinks it's fine to accept millions in cash in suitcases.
There are plenty of skilled people who are used to soft diplomacy. And then we don't have to hear about their private life either, it would be irrelevant.

rattymol · 18/04/2023 09:03

And I won't vote on an unsecured poll.

So people accepting paid appointments aren’t open to bribery? The private life of everyone in the public eye is open to scrutiny. Rightly so.

Novella4 · 18/04/2023 09:05

Yes there is no law saying you must have a further head of state

This sort of ' detail exactly , right now , how you set out the voting system and executive powers etc' is often used as a way to avoid the question of what to do with the Windsors

Some one is thinking about it though . This is how monarchy's go- slowly losing support - then suddenly

I disagree, I think for such a monumental change it would critical to know all options and know exactly what we'd be moving to. There are definitely worse systems than our current one.

Brexit may have turned out very differently if we'd had more than just a binary choice.

vera99 · 18/04/2023 09:52

How about a transition. At the death of the monarch we go into a one-year interregnum when halfway through the year we have a binary vote to continue or not. If the monarch loses the vote when we implement a previously agreed scheme that can provide a new head of state. That way they know they need to keep the support of the people if they are continuing having power.

IsGoodIsDon · 18/04/2023 10:00

I’m not a royalist and think it’s ridiculous that we pay the royal family so much. Prince Charles should be paying for his own coronation. The cost is probably comparable to us meagre subjects paying for our own weddings. They should also pay inheritance tax and the royal wills should be made public. Their finances should be much more transparent.

the only reason I would vote to keep the royals is because after watching the brexit debacle play out I’m not sure this country could cope with another big upheaval like that abolishing the monarchy so I think we are stuck with them.

Novella4 · 18/04/2023 11:29

A compromise would be charles is head of state ( though the lack of democratic voice is hard to accept ) paid a salary and all the rest stripped away
No massive grant from the state for wives brothers cousins etc
No palaces
No gilt coaches and holy oil nonsense ( nonsense that a Windsor has such I mean )

Just a man in a suit
You can call him king if you want . The rest of us will call him charles winsdor.
I think he'll be asking for an elected rep before the passive poplulacr does

sashagabadon · 18/04/2023 11:36

I think we are very fortunate to have the system we have. It has given us relative stability for 1000 years and definitely for the last couple of hundred. I am even a fan of the Lords as a second chamber as I think it’s good to have a non elected house to scrutinise laws.
I think the U.K. model of democracy has also been successfully imported to many other nations that also now enjoy relative stability because of it and that shows it works ( Australia, Canada, New Zealand immediately spring to mind).
I would hate to see a republic and a presidential system. Look at the US. Do we want to politicise every area if our life like they have there? For me, 100% not!

Quveas · 18/04/2023 11:36

wordler · 17/04/2023 21:03

Alright - republicans don't despair - my fault I realised I hadn't set up voting security on the poll. Which means you could vote more than once for your choice.

We had over 300+ votes and it was surprisingly very pro constitutional monarcy 91+ %

Which surprised me as we have quite a few people with strong republican sentiments on this board.

But fellow monarchists you make me very sad.

One of you crazy loons had voted for the constitutional monarchy option 245 times!

I have adjusted the security and we are back down to more reasonable numbers where everyone should just have one vote:

Currently 50 responses and a slightly more understandable results table.

Most people opposed to the continuation of the monarchy can't be arsed voting because the whole thing is meaningless. Nobody gives a about a little survey amongst MN users.

But given the shower in power at the moment, I would possibly think about voting if you'd included "benevolent dictator" - largely on the basis that we can trust the electorate to make reasoned choices about as much as we can trust the monarchy / government to not act in their own selfish interests.

TooBigForMyBoots · 18/04/2023 11:40

...there was one IP address from London which had voted 249 times

Buckingham Palace?🤣

@sashagabadon

For the hundredth time !

It's nonsensical to compare with the US! They combine pm and president in one role

Not the same

And Jesus - what 1000 years of stability !😂
