The royal family

Self pitying, angry hoarder - King Charles

An article in The Times has a lot of revelations about King Charles, including that he is prone to melancholy and self-pity, indecisive and stubborn, with an explosive temper - he would kick furniture in rage. He had no interest in hearing criticism, and sought out people who agreed with him. One dinner companion realised that he became actively annoyed if challenged. Charles’s homes are cluttered, with one friend calling him an outright hoarder. And unlike the Queen spends lots of money on himself.

Many agree that what Camilla, excels at is managing him: cheering him up when he’s glum, indulging him when he needs it, geeing him up when he doesn’t and knowing how and when to persuade him of a particular course of action when his staff have tried and failed. “Leave it with me,” she says to courtiers, with one press secretary describing her as “the final court of appeal”.

“If the Queen had taken half as much trouble about the rearing of her children as she did about the breeding of her horses,” a private secretary remarked drily to Robert Lacey, “the royal family wouldn’t be in such an emotional mess.”"

Why were they all parented terribly?

Not meant in a bad way, but with all the wealth in the world what else did the queen have to do with her time?

DessertsForAll · 10/03/2023 22:26

I know this has been said before, but I have never read an article that brought it all together.

Charles is the only one of them I know IRL. He's nice.

I do feel a bit sorry for him becoming King in his 70s, I think I'd just want a cup of tea if I reach that age.

I'll have a read of the article though, cheers Rousette.

Coxspurplepippin · 10/03/2023 22:32

Several people on this thread have done exactly as they accused others of doing with 'Spare' - cherry picking.

Roussette · 10/03/2023 22:35

It is an interesting article. I don't totally condemn Charles despite me not being a great fan of the RF.

He is a product of his upbringing, and it was not good, whatever anyone likes to say. The whole thing is bizarre.

There are bits of Charles I really like. (believe it or not). He was a man before his time with ecological stuff and even architecture. And when I kick back about it all... it's the whole institution and how it damages those within it.

I'm not cherry picking anything.

IJustHadToLookHavingReadTheBook · 10/03/2023 22:41

The King's a bit spoilt and grumpy? That's a surprise!

Did I say you were? So sorry.

bellac11 · 10/03/2023 22:46

Prone to melancholy, so are over half the population, indecisive, prone to self pity, blah blah blah, again tons of people meet this descriptor

So what?

Thats me half the time too.

DessertsForAll · 10/03/2023 22:50

Being prone to rages and kicking furniture is not being a bit grumpy.

@Roussette I agree this is about the institution. I think Charles could have been a lovely man if brought up normally. He is sensitive, inquisitive, and interested in people. But being brought up as an Heir encourages people to see themselves as over important, to control others, and to be petulant and throw anger fits when things do not go your way.

How about
'With the Prince’s Trust he wanted to focus on children who’d been written off: who were homeless, on the dole or had failed at school. The Trust once gave a £1,500 grant to an aspiring actor called Idris Elba to help launch his career.'

Or

'A friend describes Charles as a “driven man, who wants to do as much, with the time he is allotted, to make a real difference'.

Or

'It would be so much easier to lead a quiet life,” he wrote in a letter in 1989. However, his sympathetic biographer Robert Jobson concluded that it was his “constitutional duty” as heir to the throne to draw attention to topics on which his position might have given him an insight, for example on climate change, organic farming or youth empowerment'

bellac11 · 10/03/2023 22:56

Not much different to punching pillows or using a punching bag to get out frustration. I suppose he can afford to kick antique furniture with his income.

People love to see some extra reason why someone has the personality they do particularly if its within the royal family, yet tons of people are like this who were not bought up as an heir or particularly entitled.

DessertsForAll · 10/03/2023 22:58

@Coxspurplepippin Charles Princes Trust work is admirable. He does seem to have a work ethic.

I doubt Harry is a bundle of fun to live with, what with the drugs and constantly dredging up his childhood and every past slight from getting the smallest bedroom onwards.

I agree.

Punching furniture or pulling a sink off a wall is pathetic. Get a bloody grip! My DH is a similar age but he has self control despite being a grumpy old sod.

As I said there are bits of Charles I admire but the whole indulgence makes a very damaged individual

DessertsForAll · 10/03/2023 23:01

This is not a thread about Harry, it is about Charles,
Charles is the King. Surely we can have one thread that is just about him?

I thought this is a thread about Charles?

ChungusBoi · 10/03/2023 23:04

This doesn’t surprise me. Cant be bothered with any of them.

DessertsForAll · 10/03/2023 23:06

@Roussette Charles also had a very remote mother, a father who had no time for a sensitive son, and a grandmother who loved him very much and probably over indulged him. It is very far from an emotionally healthy upbringing.

In terms of Heirs growing up with an over inflated view of themselves because of their position, it reminds me of celebrities. A lot of celebrities seem pretty insufferable. But those who seem genuinely nice always seem to still have close childhood friends - basically people who treat them normally and will challenge them if they are out of order. It is not good for anyone to be constantly told how important and special they are.

Harry got the worst traits of both parents.

I don't think William is normal. I think he chose his wife and PR team well and isn't easy to live with.

My daughter described William as someone acting the victim as he walks into a poor persons house, helps himself to dinner then walks out as if he has a hard life. (Tax raid)

Roussette · 10/03/2023 23:14

Nothing like calling a dead woman "a complete nut job"

I wouldn't call ANYONE that who lost their life in those circumstances

DessertsForAll · 10/03/2023 23:15

@Roussette They are not interested in Charles the King. I can see when the coronation happens there will be a few bits here about Charles, but far more about Harry and Meghan whether they come to the Coronation or not.
Maybe they all just think Charles is too boring to talk about? No charisma? Just an angry old man?
