Courtiers by Valentine Low: Charles bullying staff

Bambala · 31/01/2023 15:17

I am listening to this as I clean today. I had no idea how awful Charles was to his staff - throwing things at them, taking out his ‘explosive anger’ on them. I am fascinated to find out what he thinks of William and Harry but that might have to wait for tomorrow’s cleanathon. Anyone else read or listened and been surprised by Charles’ bullying of staff?

@Bluekerfuffle or might refresh people about the trouble Kate has had with retaining staff too?

They didn’t leave because Kate was difficult, according to your link it was because of the following.

Speaking in 'William & Kate: The Journey', royal expert Ashley Pearson claimed Kate's head housekeeper and head gardener left their positions because they struggled with how much Kate wanted to do for herself.

Ashley said: "Kate had broken precedent in the sense that she does more for herself than anyone else in her position has ever done before.

So they apparently left because Kate wanted to do too much of it herself and they couldn’t deal with that as opposed to being left feeling sick and shaking at the thought or having to face her.

Yep exactly, honey people trying to make Kate look like a villain and this is the best they can come up with.

Kate is in a difficult position because she didn't grow up with household servants. She likes to cook, she likes to do things for William, and she very much likes the privacy one gets without servants around," she added.

AllOutofEverything · 31/01/2023 19:11

That is strange about the Head gardener. I mean how much gardening was Kate realistically doing in amongst her kids, lots of gym, hair appointments, socialising and engagements. And Charles reportedly is very involved in his garden but has no issue with keeping his head gardener.
And the housekeepers role is to manage others staff and organise things. They manage the cleaners, repairs, etc. No reason why Kate doing housework would have any impact at all.
I think the real reason is not being shared. Not necessarily Kates fault, but they dont want to share whatever the real issue is.

Bambala · 31/01/2023 19:12

@LadyVictoriaSponge but she did lose that private secretary very suddenly didn't she, Rebecca something, she had a pay off apparently as Kate hadn't offered her maternity leave and had broken employment law and she had to be paid off.
I reckon they all behave badly at time because of the stress - they are all guilty of losing their tempers, having high demands and high standards, because the world is judging them everyday. What a toxic environment the households must be to work in.

It’s interesting, he seems to have a short fuse on one hand and yet we hear he is weak willed and doesn’t like confrontation on the other, if it’s true he has a temper it seems it’s saved for people who can’t fight back.

Isn't being like that to people who can't fight back the ultimate type of bullying? Using power and authority to undermine. As for the throwing stuff - that is unbelievable, you can't do that to employees.

I presume they have Housekeepers and Gardners now, from that report they used to work for the Queen so maybe they were a bit older and had their set ideas on how things were done and Kate has her ways of doing things, perhaps she needed staff that fitted her brief of how her house and grounds should be managed.

Neowulf · 31/01/2023 20:02

You’re right bullying staff is despicable. Let’s hope that bullying report gets leaked and they get some comeuppance. Can’t believe Harry got away with hitting his security guard, and forcing that driver to retrace his mums last journey - and threatening him to keep quiet.

Bambala · 31/01/2023 20:11

@Neowulf I think more and more that all the male royals are really quite damaged and badly behaved people. Charles, William, Harry, all with anger issues and bullying personalities. I suppose we shouldn't be surprised with the entitled upbringing they have and people at their beck and call

Isnt that the responsibility of HR? not kate personally?

coodawoodashooda · 31/01/2023 20:18

Im going to listen tomorrow.

Bambala · 31/01/2023 20:25

@Theunamedcat I seem to remember that it was what Kate said to her which was the issue - there was some scandal about it. She had been with Kate for years and it all ended very badly.

William and Harry prob also inherited the aggression from their mum, she’s pushed her step mum down the stairs

Wow.

I have never heard that story before. Thank you for highlighting it.

Shocking.

If what we’ve read of the late Queen is true, she had ‘grace under pressure’ - something that the rest of that bunch seem to lack.

Throwing tantrums and objects at anyone, including those who work for you, is unacceptable behaviour.

CathyorClaire · 31/01/2023 20:48

And another revelation that's somehow slipped under my radar. While I've admittedly relied on tabloid summaries I really think they were too busy hooting at stallions and his frozen dick to pick some of the more serious stuff up.

He really is a vile piece of work

I would imagine that it’s more the case of it being typical for a royal household to have a housekeeper and gardener working at least 9 am to 5 pm every day Mon to Fri minimum. Fine if you’re used to that, but intrusive if you’re not. It sounds like Kate wasn’t used to that.

Personally, I have been fortunate enough to have been on some amazing overseas holidays staying in private villas at hotel resorts. Our last holiday had a gardener to check/tidy the garden every day, a pool man to check the pool level and chemicals, and two maids who had to be in the villa from 9 am (to cook breakfast for us), then clean and tidy until around 2 pm. It was lovely that everything was taken care of, but it’s not what we’re used to. We didn’t need to have all of the floors and bathrooms washed every day or the bedsheets changed daily, but that was their job and they weren’t allowed to leave early or not show up. I can imagine it was the same type of situation for Kate where she preferred to have less staff around as that wasn’t what she was used to.

Well, we've all seen the pen incident..

I was just thinking the same!

Neowulf · 31/01/2023 22:34

CathyorClaire

It was her stepmother Raine, saw it on a doc on Netflix about the pushing.

And Harry’s book enlightened me on how he treats people who work for him. Really awful. Also the way he talks about women, very revealing.

How does he talk about women, Neowulf? He talks beautifully and respectfully about all of his exes in that book. So who?

Also, every single post you've made on this site has been about H & M. Weirdly obsessed - try letting a bit of positivity into your life.

You obviously haven’t read the disgusting way he spoke about his disabled House Matron at school.

Neowulf · 31/01/2023 23:56

‘Weirdly obsessed’

says the poster stalking me 😂

Neowulf · 31/01/2023 23:59

Yeah he’s so respectful about the ‘horsey lady’, the poor old matron, and so respectful how he talks about a conveyor belt of women 🙄😂

and reducing his wife to her looks and attractiveness, yeah objectifying is so respectful 😂🙄

if anything you’re the one weirdly obsessed with defending the indefensible- so similar to another poster 😉😂

Neowulf · 01/02/2023 00:02

Funny how easily you start making personal digs at posters that don’t agree with you, with your insinuations that my life is negative and that I’m weird and obsessed. Tut tut, not very kind is it, says a lot about what type of person you are.

DaSilvaP · 01/02/2023 00:05

Bambala · 31/01/2023 16:04

@ManyNameChanges wow I bet it takes supreme diplomacy to work in that environment.

I don’t condone his treatment of his wife, not at all. But as an employer, to throw things and verbally abuse your staff - that is horrendous, like something from feudal times.

.... like something from feudal times.

???

The whole concept of "aristocracy / nobility / monarchy" is from feudal times.

Not that many commoners are any better.

Menstrualcycledisplayteam · 01/02/2023 00:07

The poster said "women", not "woman" - so who else? Have you read the whole book? Not just the extracts in newspapers?
