Spare has done remarkably well and looks to become one of the top 10 best selling memoirs of all time.
The book did much better than many on this board was predicting.
That is because there is an insane amount of interest in Harry and Meghan.

It proves that there's a huge amount of interest in the Royal Family and the late Diana.

Did The Bench sell well? What about the rest of the book deal - will they sell if they're not bitching about Charles, William and Kate?

TheSnowyOwl · 21/01/2023 16:35

It’ll end up being a pyrrhic sales victory though.

I have two issues with saying it looks likely to be one of the top 10 bestselling memories of all time. It’s sold as fiction but already a lot has been proven to be fantasy (to be polite) and records for fiction have only been held for around 20 years. I think giving it free on Audiobook will have also skewed numbers.

barnbaby · 21/01/2023 17:58

So many good reviews too, and not just the UK version.

I'm guessing someone in charge of this bookshop is not a fan of Harry. 😉😂

3.1m copies you say?

Excellent. That considerably boosts the chances of one turning up in a charity shop near me so I can read it happy in the knowledge I've helped a good cause which isn't lining Harold's already bulging pockets.

Gentle poster: I am sorry to break the bad news to you, but the copy you buy in a charity shop is not free, but will have been donated by a person who actually bought it.

This means that Harry gets his royalty.

The charity buy is cheap for YOU, but as far as Harry goes, his pockets are already lined by the 3 million and counting who bought his book, whether or not they read it, tear it up, bin it, burn it or donate it to a charity shop for you to buy cheaply.

HairinaBeaHive · 22/01/2023 02:48

Harold gets his 30 pieces of silver ...

StClare101 · 22/01/2023 03:07

I can’t get over the fact that someone would be so insanely jealous of not being the first born that they’d call their book m “Spare” and hate what the RF stands for but still call himself Prince Harry on the cover……

vera99 · 22/01/2023 03:10

teapotfullofsquash · 21/01/2023 16:02

I'll read it once it's in the charity shop on the buy two books for a £1. 😂

If you buy two copies of it then you will truly always have a Spare.I nicked it off t'internet....

Gentle poster: Sorry to break equally bad news back but you are stating the obvious 😄

Sure, but at least we've only donated £8 to the Sussex charity between the 4 people who've now read the same copy of the turgid tome.

MrsMaxDeWinter · 22/01/2023 10:54

Thank you for your donation @Coxspurplepippin

If you wish, I am happy to write to Penguin RH for you to ensure that your money goes to Sentebale, the charity that is benefiting from some of the book sales. Sentebale have already announced that Harry donated 1.5 million from his advance.

I am happy to write to suggest that Harry's 10% royalty from your combined 8 pounds, so basically, your combined 80 pence, should count towards that. Can't have your 80 pence lining Harry's pocket!

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 22/01/2023 11:00

Headline in a few week's time -'Charity shops beg people to stop donating their copies of Spare because they don't have the room to stock and display the hundreds they've already received.'

No, no, it's quite ok - it works out at 20p from me and if it wasn't going to Harry I'd have only spent it on a biscuit. So he's done me a favour. Hurrah for Harry.

Ohnonevermind · 22/01/2023 11:09

@MrsMaxDeWinter

Harry pledged to donate 1.5m to Sentable, which isn’t quite the same as making a donation.

Have you a press release confirming he’s actually donated the money and it’s been handed over tot he charity as Sentable’s website and a quick look at Archwell don’t mention it

MrsMaxDeWinter · 22/01/2023 11:24

Harry has already donated $1,500,000 to Sentebale.

The pledge made was to donate a further £300,000 to WellChild.

This was announced at the time the book was announced. It was stated that the donation to Sentebale had already been made and the pledge was to WellChild.

CathyorClaire · 22/01/2023 12:08

Excellent.

Maybe he can see his way clear to personally repaying the £19k furlough money paid to Sentabale too.

MrsMaxDeWinter · 22/01/2023 12:23

I will suggest that too. Especially if taxpayers refund Harry and Meghan the contribution their wedding made to the economy, which has been estimated as anything from 80 million to the rather wildly exaggerated one billion.

I am not a big fan of many of the royals as individuals but there is no doubt that as an institution, they contribute massively to the economy, and that includes Harry and Meghan when they were here. So unlike you, I don't begrudge that 19 000 pounds when I balance it against what they contributed to the economy.

CathyorClaire · 22/01/2023 12:37

The royals have little to no impact on tourist income. The only source that has ever found a positive correlation is a branding company with royal links who published their report with no indication as to who commissioned it.

As for H&M it might be more appropriate to ask them to make up the deficits in tourist revenue seen in 2018 rather than reimbursing them a non existent sum:

MrsMaxDeWinter · 22/01/2023 13:06

I said already the 1 billion is wildly exaggerated.

Here is the assessment from the Guardian, left leaning, Republican and usually fair in its royal reporting.

They do when it comes to big events. Weddings, jubilees, etc generate increased tourist income. The coronation most definitely will.

Bluekerfuffle · 22/01/2023 19:44

People will always be interested in gossip about the royals. They want to know all their little secrets and also see for themselves how unbelievably whiney and pathetic the author is, did he really moan about such stupid little things? If it was about Harry and Meghan’s life after they left and had no details about royalty, no one much would be interested.

This made me laugh out loud 🤣

CathyorClaire · 22/01/2023 19:59

Here is the assessment from the Guardian, left leaning, Republican and usually fair in its royal reporting.

It's an assessment made ahead of the event and the key word was 'could'

'Didn't' proved to be the case.

They do when it comes to big events. Weddings, jubilees, etc generate increased tourist income. The coronation most definitely will.

Yes, agreed. There's a short term effect in limited sectors. I should have made that clear.
