Do people intentionally ignore Meghans biracial heritage?

I'm not disputing that many media swipes at Meghan had a racist tone but im really confused as to how many people keep talking about Meghan as being black. I'm assuming many people saying this are American? I dont know many biracial people, myself included, who refer to themselves as only one race. It seems a very American thing to me.

When people talk about Meghan, especially when negatively, why is it considered racist, completely disregarding that she is half white? And especially when she was first introduced, many people didn't know what ethnicity Meghan was. I think she actually has a look that could be quite global in terms of being from anywhere, but she has quite a Southern European/South American look to me.

Again...im not saying there is no racism towards Meghan. But I find it off that people ignore that Meghan is not black, she is biracial.

She is not a young actress, I'm afraid. She is broadly the same age as Zoe and slightly older than Naya was (see what you did there!) or are you counting days/mins/sec? Do you really think she would be competing for parts against Zendaya if she had not met Prince Harry? She was born into the industry, married to a director and it still never happened because acting talent was not present unless you can link to prove otherwise.

If you look black and identify more with the black culture that's your choice.
It doesn't mean you deny being white. You are white and black but can choose to say you are black - doesn't mean you are denying your whiteness.

@Coucous if you’d have read the full thread, you would have seen my comment where I said I completely understand when people claim one side more because they relate more to that side. So that could be relating more to their black side because they spent more time with their black family or their social circle is full of black people. Even in those cases, some people still say they’re black. So it’s not that they’re denying their white side but they’re not exactly acknowledging it either.

I’m not so concerned about how people identify. I’m simply putting in my two pence exactly the same way you are. As I said to the OP, there’s always many conversations on this topic on black Twitter and mixed race people always voice their reasonings on why they identify as black

I had no idea she was not white when I first saw her. She referred to herself as caucation on her CV. I think she just makes a hoo-ha about being bi racial. Friends I have of different and mixed races never mention their race/skin colour. They are just accepted for themselves. It is just Meghan who keeps stating she is no racial. As if anyone cares. People don't like her for her behaviour nothing to do with skin colour or race.

I agree, especially when the opposite doesn't seem to be allowed. I've seen where some people (both mixed race and black people, as people of other races) choose to identify as white or want to not be identified as anything and they get mocked and laughed out the room or threads or comments.

Blackness seems to be free for all and the only time "yOu Can't pOlicE hOw oThErs iDeNtify", and I think it's inadvertently putting black people in their place once again by telling them you have a right to say who they can or can't accept.

Why aren't other races forced to accept anyone else?

Sorry I completely missed your comment!

1000%! All you have to do is read some comments on this thread which further strengthens what you’ve said

The late Naya Rivera from Glee. Meghan has also been auditioning from childhood but never got anywhere.
I was simply demonstrating that her lack of success in acting is not down to her skin colour but to lack of talent.
I do not agree that Zendaya is only known because of Tom as she is a superstar and fronts huge advertising campaigns.
There isn't a magic formula which guarantees what it takes in the Industry but your baseline is surely possessing good acting skills which all the others mentioned do have.

My kids are bi-racial and all consider themselves white, except one who is always white except when he is going through airport security or stopped by police!Angry
I do find it a bit odd though, speaking as a white person of course, to not want to acknowledge a multi-racial heritage, which as far as I can tell is a pretty beautiful thing. A wide gene pool is good thing!

That said my kids identify as white and, although fine, has historically the bad connotations and negative consequences on the black - so identifying as your oppressed roots does make more sense emotionally. I Hope i just made sense with that botched sentence.

I didn't realise she wasn't "white" until seeing her mum at the wedding.

I didn't realise she wasn't "white" until seeing her mum at the wedding.

Most people didn't.

She also mentioned this happened when she was in Suits. Viewers didn't realise she wasn't white until her father in the movie was introduced (played by a Black man). She said she saw some comments where some racists wrote "eww she's black/mixed race?" and others were simply saying they had no idea.

I suppose it meant the racists stopped fancying her. Nothing worthwhile was lost there, I'd say.

Just to add that when I say most people didn't, I mean many people didn't know until they either heard her mum is Black or they saw her mum.

Simply looking at Meghan without context and never knowing about her, you wouldn't know she's biracial and she definitely blends in perfectly in a sea of white faces/people.

NotTerfNorCis · 08/01/2023 14:17

I know I'm late to the thread and repeating what other people have said, but I honestly didn't notice Meghan is mixed race and was very surprised when I heard all the allegations of racism.

In both of my posts I have said that I don’t tell mixed race people how to identify. If they want to identify as black (I’ll say it louder for the ones in the back) then who am I to say otherwise.

I don’t police how people identify at all but I think the reason one identifies how they do, is quite important. As a black woman, it’s so rubbish to essentially be told ‘well I’m not good enough to be able to join that group other there so I’ll just come over to you poor sods.’

Anyway, this isn’t about me. This is about how people view many mixed race people including MM

I heard you and don't think we disagree on many points. Where we differ is that is that I belive that people who identifying as black white people won't accept them are not necessarily settling for the paupers or poor sods group. Lived experiences aside, even if that was their initial thought, anyone who has taken any time to do any reading will have learned about motives behind the weaponising of race, structural racism, colourism, the contributions people of colour have made throughout history and about whitewashing etc. Both Akala and Reni Eddo Lodge have discussed how they came to identify as black, neither is accepting a place on a 3rd rate team, even though they recognise the challenges of this identity and the unique challenges of their place within the group. The are both mixed like Meghan but will be viewed very differently to her.

She was amazing in Suits.

Good actress then?

DewinDwl · 08/01/2023 14:25

Keep trying bakalava.

Suits ran for 9 seasons and MM was paid around $50,000 per episode so she was a millionaire in her own right, through her own work, before she met Harry. According to you though that's an unsuccessful acting career 😂

I'm mixed race, living in the UK, very similar colouring as Megan.
I am never thought of as white even though I am at least 50% white (possibly more as my non-white parent is light-skinned and from a former colony).
The white community will never think of me as one of them, so I identify much more with the other 50% of my heritage. It's not only a USA thing, but it's hard to discuss race with white people who live in a majority white community, some people will just never get it unless they experience it themselves (which they are very unlikely to)

I don't think Meghan really looked like a white American girl. I think she could pass as Hispanic or a lighter Indian girl. In my (Jewish) community, we have a huge range of hair and skin types even within the same family.

I would be assumed to be white by most people even though I do not identify as white (and never would). We have specific genetic conditions within our community which only Jewish people from particular regions can get.
My DH has always been assumed to be white (his surname is a giveaway to a few but you would be surprised at how few!) During lockdown, he grew a beard and my neighbour told me that he looked like a "Golders Green slumlord" and was surprised when I told her that we are Jewish.
