Table plan at wedding

Apparently at Harry and Meghan's wedding reception the table plan followed the American protocol of sitting couples next to each other. William and Kate insisted on changing the table plan at their table and having couples sitting apart.

A truly thread-worthy revelation.

Pippa did the same. Got slated for it in Finding Freedom.

Whataretheodds · 07/01/2023 17:15

So?

I find it hard to believe that most MNers wouldn't switch the place cards round for a placement they'd prefer.

Whataretheodds · 07/01/2023 17:16

It's also not really im the same league as "i was suicidal and blocked from getting medical treatment, effectively a prisoner, my life at risk"

UnicornMumcraft · 07/01/2023 17:17

Meh, plenty of people mix things up on their table at weddings. Mild annoyance maybe but not exactly an earth shattering misdemeanour.

They rearranged the table so couples alternated. So every other couple at their table could not sit to one another.

Getting to a table and saying to someone, can we switch places is fine. Insisting the whole table is rearranged to your preferred seating is rude.

@AuroraCake I did not realise Pippa did it. That was also rude.

Wow that’s rude

watchfulwishes · 07/01/2023 17:19

I would much prefer weddings under the American system, I did not know they did it differently.

The worst thing about weddings is having to sit next to some boring bloke like William

BradfordGirl · 07/01/2023 17:20

I would have thought most people prefer to sit next to their wife or husband.

OP posts:
Mumsnut · 07/01/2023 17:21

W&K denied it was them , apparently

TheHauntedPencilCase · 07/01/2023 17:22

I've never been to a wedding where couples were separated! Didn't realise it was a tradition....

Pixiedust1234 · 07/01/2023 17:26

No idea if this was true for the wedding but if you believe most period dramas to have some semblance of truth then its normal not to sit next to your partner. Its to encourage talking to others, making sure nobody is ignored, its to help find possible new friends and its to avoid nobody talking at all because everyone is quietly whispering to their spouse.

So people could just switch it back?

I think it's rude (though not heinous) and I wouldn't do it myself, but I've been on here long enough to know others don't care. I also can't think why you'd include this kind of detail in a book about your family if you hoped to reconcile with them.

Given William was Best Man, tradition wouldn’t have had him on the same table as Kate anyway

LittleBearPad · 07/01/2023 17:27

Ahh quote fail

Placcyboel · 07/01/2023 17:27

Right so now we can add placecardgate to fingerinfacegate, lipglossgate, dogbowlgate and the frost bitten penis saga.

W and K have denied doing it . Why would they do it ?

BradfordGirl · 07/01/2023 17:31

Because they did not agree with the American way of doing the seating plan?

OP posts:
BethJ62 · 07/01/2023 17:37

I simply cannot imagine that happening.

Mumsnut · 07/01/2023 17:44

Was it the same table as Pippa?

Samcro · 07/01/2023 17:48

I have never been to a wedding where I have been separated from my partner. So would assume that’s the English way of doing things( I have only been to weddings in England)
very rude to mess with seating plan

piedbeauty · 07/01/2023 17:56

Another case where recollections may vary?! I can't imagine this.

BradfordGirl · 07/01/2023 18:01

The Royal Family do like to call him a liar.

I think it's the posh British way of doing things. It's also posh etiquette in the US, although few people do it these days. State dinners at the White House do not sit partners next to each other.
