The royal family

Does Camilla have to curtsey to Charles?

...and Kate to William?

saw this in the news, and it seems protocol requires girlfriends to curtsey to royals.

“When I was researching my biography of King Charles, I discovered his female staff were running a competition to see who could perform the deepest curtsey without falling over.

A former girlfriend of his also confided that protocol demanded she curtsey to him, leading one evening to a clash of heads when he mistimed an attempt to kiss her.”

did Camilla and Kate curtsey to Charles/William when they were dating?

And does it stop after they marry?

and what about the children, do they need to curtsey to their royal father? Or are they exempt because they are born royal?

does anyone know the protocols?

There is film of what happens when they break protocol Harry and meghan on the balcony they are supposed to look out and pay attention to what's happening in front of them meghan keeps looking away Harry keeps telling her to turn around (I think they were waiting for a fly past) so I think all that happens is a correction if they are outsiders they won't have been raised to do this automatically like the born royals are

You also see the Queen teaching Louis (I think or a young George) to face the front pay attention the Queen also tells William off as an adult for not paying attention on the balcony

It must be stifling

thebellagio · 12/12/2022 17:19

@Frapped this is one instance where sexism doesn’t come into it. Beatrice and Eugenies husbands and Mike Tindall will all be expected to bow to people in the family….

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 12/12/2022 17:26

Even their own website states bowing/curtsying is not obligatory:

Do you think Kate ever tells William to F off in arguments?

It’s just courtesy. The armed forces are parading in front of the people they are sworn to serve and protect. They deserve their full attention.

I mean, my grandma would’ve done the same if we were at a special occasion and I was mucking about not paying attention. She hardly calls for a beheading, just a quick reminder.

catandcoffee · 12/12/2022 17:40

If you really think about it, a human bowing down to another human, because they're royal 😂

No one is above anyone.... we all shit the same.

It's so unbelievabley stupid in this day and age. There is no such thing as royal blood.

Bernadinetta · 12/12/2022 17:41

Anyone remember the scene early on in The Crown where a young Elizabeth sees her grandmother, Queen Mary for the first time since becoming queen and the elderly Queen Mary curtsies to her granddaughter, the queen.

Inaccurate - she wouldn't have to. Queens don't curtsey to one another.

Are these UK protocols or global royalty traditions? And are these written down or handed verbally through generations?

i wonder if there is a ‘club’ for royals across the world or at least in Europe where they decide on their joint interests and approach

They are global protocols. There was an event at the palace recently with Camilla, Queen Rania, another queen (can't remember who), Sophie Wessex and Crown Princess Mary of Denmark. Sophie and Mary curtsey to the queens but not to each other, while the queens do not curtsey to each other because they share a rank.

I wish I could find the video because the greetings are fascinating!

I found the video on a reel on Instagram, hope this link works:

Gosh that clip makes me feel it’s like when you say a word over and over it starts to sound weird. Curtsying is a bit odd isn’t it!! I used to do it at the end of every ballet lesson.

So interesting! Who was that elegant black lady? She don’t bow to the pretty one (is that Rania?) . Is she of ‘higher rank’ ?

sorry if I am offending anyone by not knowing their names

I find curtseying cringeworthy, outdated and just plain odd. Like fuck would I ever curtsey to my DH, or expect him to bow to me.

The mere thought is hilarious. 🤣🤣

No wonder they’re all so boring if they have to think about this stuff. I’d be so busy getting my knickers in a twist about who was bobbing to whom I’d forget to speak.

Karwomannghia · 12/12/2022 20:12

That clip is incredibly awkward tbf

asblindasabat · 12/12/2022 20:17

I wouldn’t last 5 minutes in the royal family.

I wouldn’t feel like curtsying/bowing to my family members and I’d certainly not like having to be dressed up all the time.

Id be running around Buckingham Palace in my PJs or my joggers!

RewildingAmbridge · 12/12/2022 20:18

I met Princess Anne through work and we were told by the palace people who came in advance to brief us all, that curtseying was completely unnecessary.

I think that was just a guest, not a royal! It would be strange if the royals themselves didn't follow royal protocol, but I suspect most commoners don't actually bow or curtsey these days? I don't think I would- I'd feel too silly.

"bowing protocol" 😂

Oh dear god, these are just humans and not even specially good or notable or clever, the whole idea of 'bowing protocol' is just too funny.

I'm not bowing or curtseying to any human for some made-up reason they invented (and rather like) that I'm supposed to. Who would fgs
