I think William should have learned Welsh?

William is the new Prince of Wales. He has known for years he will be, but still only knows a few Welsh words.
Charles learned to speak Welsh and can have conversations with people and has given many speeches in Welsh.
I don't understand why William has not done the preparation his father did for this role?

Am I right in thinking most Welsh people don’t speak Welsh?

MrsTerryPratchett · 07/10/2022 15:23

I think he does speak Welsh, doesn't he?

idonotmind · 07/10/2022 15:23

Too busy having fun otherwise?

antelopevalley · 07/10/2022 15:24

He does not speak Welsh.

King Charles doesn't speak Welsh either.

Them not speaking welsh is the least of the problems regarding the whole Prince of Wales bollocks. The last true Prince of Wales was Llywelyn ap Gruffudd.

jtaeapa · 07/10/2022 15:32

I think that his time is better spent on other things. Looking after his kids, on engagements etc.

Mark Drakeford calls for him to learn Welsh on taking Prince of WAles title.

www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2022/sep/16/my-respect-would-be-increased-prince-william-urged-to-learn-welsh

"“She asked the children to teach her some Welsh words,” Rosaria Burke, 25, says. “They said hello and ‘nos da’ for goodnight.”
William, on the other hand, had already mastered “good morning” — saying “bore da” — the only problem being that it was already afternoon. When one woman taught him “prynhawn da” for good afternoon, he repeated it..."

It's pretty widely known that he can speak Welsh.

AntlerRose · 07/10/2022 15:34

I think everyone should learn two uk languages

antelopevalley · 07/10/2022 15:34

@CallTheMobWife Charles is supposed to speak conversational Welsh.

Well if he knows a few words it's a few more than me and I'm Welsh. If I'm honest I don't know many people who can speak Welsh where I live.

For someone living in England why would they spend time learning a minority language such as Welsh instead of something like Spanish?
If the people of Wales want to keep Welsh going that's one thing, but why everyone else?

ImAvingOops · 07/10/2022 15:40

I think it's entirely reasonable that if he and his wife are going to take the titles Prince and Princess of Wales, then both of them ought to have been learning Welsh already. It's not like these title were a surprise to them.
It was lazy and somewhat tone deaf, to have not made the effort already - with power comes responsibility. Bothering to learn the language might have gone some way to soothing feelings about inherited titles given to people who have no real connection to the place.

Madamecastafiore · 07/10/2022 15:41

Apparently he's learning according to Harley's Bazaar.

He's quite busy though so might take a while!

Coronateachingagain · 07/10/2022 15:41

I agree, he should have been taught Welsh from early on. Or he should have picked it up on his own later on.

Aspiringmatriarch · 07/10/2022 15:42

Yes I agree, he should have been learning in for a while. Maybe he has, I don't know. But if not I think that's a bit poor really.

antelopevalley · 07/10/2022 15:47

He does not speak Welsh. He said himself recently that he is learning Welsh now he is the Prince of Wales. He has had years to learn it, He doesn't have to have a high level of fluency, just be able to chat a bit.

According to this www.lingalot.com/how-many-languages-does-prince-william-speak/ William can speak some Welsh. it includes a video that I haven't watched.

maddy68 · 07/10/2022 15:49

I am Welsh and don't speak it. Most Welsh people dont actually he knows more than I do

HappyHamsters · 07/10/2022 15:50

If he is learning it whats the problem, he doesnt need to be fluent. Charles isnt fluent either.

They could pick one of the other languages. It doesnt have to be welsh.

I think it would be fun and these languages are part of the uk heritage. just an introductory course - not compulsory to fluent levels They can still learn some modern european languages too.

I was intoduced to french, german, latin and spanish at school to see what they were like. I only studied 2 further.

Given kids get 2 hours homework as it is I don’t think there’s room for a ‘fun’ language that they will never need to use and hardly anyone speaks.

70% of Welsh people do not speak Welsh.

Of those who do, by no means all are fluent.

So in not speaking the language, William fits in pretty well with the modern Welsh nation I should think.
