The royal family

I think William should have learned Welsh?

William is the new Prince of Wales. He has known for years he will be, but still only knows a few Welsh words.
Charles learned to speak Welsh and can have conversations with people and has given many speeches in Welsh.
I don't understand why William has not done the preparation his father did for this role?

Okay got it.
He does not have to be sensitive to the issues around the Prince of Wales title still existing and being passed on to William. He does not have to do the bare minimum to try and get Welsh detractors on his side.
Just carry on as normal.

Yes that’s exactly what all the responses said.

antelopevalley · 07/10/2022 16:29

How is William embracing the Welsh culture?

I’m sure he will make an effort to learn some of the language. In fact I think
i read that he had learnt a little
when he lived in Anglesey. A little often goes a long way. I am put in mind of the recent footage of the Queen speaking Gaelic in Ireland and how much that was appreciated and I don’t believe the Queen was fluent in that language.

Even if he was fluent in Welsh, which would take many years of intense study, I doubt he'd win over the 'detractors'. Statistically, it's likely that many if not most of them don't even speak the language themselves.

Besides, he is learning Welsh, isn't he?

Which aspects of 'Welsh culture' do you want him to 'embrace'?

You're not Welsh yourself, are you?

She also wasn't claiming to be Princess of Ireland. The man is in his 40s, he has hardly lacked for time or pre-warning of the job.

BlodynGwyn · 07/10/2022 16:34

My mum was a born and raised Welsh woman who couldn't speak Welsh and neither did her parents who were born in Wales in the 1890's.

Well, she was queen of the United Kingdom, which includes Northern Ireland, where Irish is officially recognised as a minority language. Of course, most people don't speak Irish, but then again, most Welsh people don't speak Welsh.

Arnaquer · 07/10/2022 16:37

I'm Welsh. I don't speak Welsh and couldn't care less if William does or doesn't.

Someone said they thought William was embracing Welsh culture. I wanted to know how?

Are you Welsh ?

DewinDwl · 07/10/2022 16:40

I heard Kind Charles speaking at the Senedd the other day and he sounded fluent and natural which surprised me.

Obviously PW hasn't felt the need to prep for the job the same way his father did. I am failing to see what links him and KM to Wales other than their token stay in Anglesey. A bit of Welsh would go a long way I think. I firmly believe anyone can learn any language if they are motivated enough. But to be fair I imagine PW's life is busy and hectic to a degree none of us can possibly comprehend 🙄

Well, you accused others of not paying 'much attention to Welsh politics and culture', implying that you did.

So my question remains. Which aspects of 'Welsh culture' do you, as a non Welsh person, want William to 'embrace'?

DewinDwl · 07/10/2022 16:42

jeffgoldblum · 07/10/2022 16:38

Are you Welsh ?

Why should people out themselves here? If you have a point please make it without asking people to provide personal information

girlmom21 · 07/10/2022 16:43

Why do the royal family upset you so much, OP? Are you Welsh?

girlmom21 · 07/10/2022 16:44

Because lots of Welsh people are saying they don't think he needs to learn Welsh and the OP is upset by people disagreeing with her.

jeffgoldblum · 07/10/2022 16:45

Because this poster starts thread after thread slagging the royals off on extremely thin grounds half the time ! , if they are Welsh then this thread is fair enough ( although many welsh people don't care!) , however I believe this is another straw to be clutched at!

BigWoollyJumpers · 07/10/2022 16:46

antelopevalley · 07/10/2022 16:02

So lots of you think it does not matter he does not speak Welsh as hardly anyone speaks it anyway?
You don't pay much attention to Welsh politics and culture then.

But if 70% of actual Welsh people can't be arsed either.......

Henddraig · 07/10/2022 16:47

I think it would be great if kids were exposed to the other languages of the Union at school. It might do something to increase our respect and understanding for each other’s cultures and history.

Welsh is not a particularly hard language. I learned as an adult, not to fluency but to good A Level standard in about a year. No harder than French or Italian which I did A Levels in 30 years ago. In fact the grammar is easier IMO.

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 07/10/2022 16:48

Welsh politics is imposing Welsh in areas that haven’t spoken Welsh since the Normans invaded. I don’t think I want to tug the forelock to my liege Lord but I don’t give a flying fuck if he speaks Welsh or not. I rarely hear it spoken. My kids are annoyed they have to o GCSE Welsh and would have preferred to do Computer Science Or something less boring instead.

Twizbe · 07/10/2022 16:49

He's already doing better than me. I was born in wales and I don't speak a word of the language.

The thread is on its third page so it seems that other people apart from the OP have opinions on the topic. And IIRC it was other posters calling royals thick and lazy not the OP? Maybe we should close all the threads about the war in Ukraine as most posters on them aren't Ukrainian...

tigger1001 · 07/10/2022 16:50

"Why?

For someone living in England why would they spend time learning a minority language such as Welsh instead of something like Spanish?
If the people of Wales want to keep Welsh going that's one thing, but why everyone else?

They could pick one of the other languages. It doesnt have to be welsh.

I think it would be fun and these languages are part of the uk heritage. just an introductory course - not compulsory to fluent levels They can still learn some modern european languages too.

I was intoduced to french, german, latin and spanish at school to see what they were like. I only studied 2 further."

I'm Scottish and have zero interest in learning Gaelic. It's certainly not widely spoken where I am. Given the state of the education system I would rather they concentrated on the basics first and foremost.

J0y · 07/10/2022 16:53

I think he should try!
I'm Irish not British but the smattering of Irish I have gives me insights in to why place names were named. I like that.

Nobody expects flency im sure but a few plenaries in Welsh would show willing!
