He looks so so young standing vigil. That must be hard.

They are jubilee medals.

James is 14. Peter is 44. A 30 year age gap between the Queens eldest and youngest grandchild.

Zara is the eldest.

smilesy · 18/09/2022 19:12

Zara is the eldest.

No she isn’t. Her brother Peter was born in 1977. Zara was born in 1981

Missingpop · 18/09/2022 19:56

He is young; he’s 14 his parents have shielded both of their children from the public glare; meaning they can have a relatively normal childhood; both children appear to be very shy; but grounded their cousins were there for them as were their parents; he was an absolute credit to his Grannie & his parents; he did himself proud under very distressing circumstances

He is only 14. Shouldn't be doing it.

Why?
He obviously wanted too and wouldn't have been forced to do it 🙄

spongedog · 18/09/2022 20:14

I've now watched and probably found that the most moving part of events so far. It was clear many of the older GC were struggling but it had been organised such that the youngest were appropriately in the middle. He did well; they all did well. It was lovely to see them all together - I hope they can meet again like that under brighter circumstances. I am from a family where the cousins joke (ish) - oh look another wedding or funeral.

I believe, as I did at the time of the death of Diana, that the grieving public do need to see the family. These are not private families or private occasions.

Gingernan · 18/09/2022 20:28

I expect he was keen to do it with his cousins. A very hard experience for him, but amazing too. Probably a time when bonds were strengthened between siblings and cousins. Children can be very strong. My daughter wasn't much older when she did a reading at her grandads funeral, stepping in for an adult who was too upset. I was very proud of her, but not at all surprised.

Gingernan · 18/09/2022 20:38

Tony Blair did not insist anything, but loathed as he is, the Queen would not be the beloved figure she became if he had not strongly advised her to grant Princess Diana the funeral the country wanted to see for her. Hard to forget the Royal families manipulation of her and Charles too. I liked the Queen and ha e lived through her entire reign, but angel she was not.

TizerorFizz · 18/09/2022 21:11

I think this was a vigil too far. Of course James wanted to be included but it was unfair put him, and probably his sister, in the position of making a choice at all. It’s like Harry mk 2. No wonder Sophie looked concerned. Why would the Queen even think this was ok? Did she learn nothing? It’s just all too much now.

PizzaFunghi · 18/09/2022 21:13

I don't think the Queen had anything to do with it! It was decided relatively recently, by the cousins, that they wanted to do it.

DeeofDenmark · 18/09/2022 21:36

So the male grandchildren get jubilee medals but the female ones don’t ? What exactly are these medals meant to represent?

TizerorFizz · 18/09/2022 21:38

Well maybe they should have remembered that one of them was 14. Everyone keeps saying The Queen planned her funeral. So who knows?

All of the family got them, females included.

DeeofDenmark · 18/09/2022 21:51

I wonder why none of the women wore them then.

TizerorFizz · 18/09/2022 22:43

George and Charlotte are walking behind the coffin tomorrow! It gets worse!!!

TizerorFizz · 18/09/2022 22:48

They are aged 9 and 7. No Louis. No fun for the cameras then! They will probably have nightmares like Harry.

toomuchlaundry · 18/09/2022 22:50

Think they are following the coffin as it goes in the church not the whole procession. Hopefully, the cameras will keep off them once the service starts

Outsideswimbabe · 18/09/2022 23:12

The Queen’s Diamond and Platinum Jubilees I believe.

Outsideswimbabe · 18/09/2022 23:13

Who is?

TizerorFizz · 18/09/2022 23:15

George and Charlotte!

SoupDragon · 18/09/2022 23:50

They are simply following it into the Abbey having arrived there by car

TizerorFizz · 19/09/2022 07:19

Most children really would not do this. Of course they will be on tv!

Tiswa · 19/09/2022 07:30

It is very different from Orincess Diana though

mine have been fortunate to know 4 great grandparents one of who is still alive

DD did a reading aged 5 at my Grandads funeral with me by her side - never regretted it

Neither went to their paternal great grandmothers for various reasons DD wished she had

both went to my grandmother aged 10 and 7 and were absolutely fine. They travelled in the funeral car (last minute necessary decision) and we’re fine. Followed the coffin in etc

they liked saying goodbye to them and feeling closure

it is by no means in on the same scale at all but losing a great grandparent is sad but certainly not going to haunt them

It’s more formal than most, but it’s not remotely uncommon for family members to follow the coffin into the church.

Theyll be with their parents.

TizerorFizz · 19/09/2022 08:29

I’ve rarely seen children do it. However I’m anti funeral. Never quite sure what purpose they serve for children. There are other ways to celebrate a life.
