In Canada there has been a fair bit of coverage but it isn’t constant. The day of, most news channels covered only the Queen, but by the next day it started quieting down. Still a major news item, but we also got a new Conservative party leader on Saturday, so that’s been pretty big news. There was a major knife attack in a small town last week with many casualties, which is also getting a lot of coverage. Cost of living, stock market plunge, wildfires… cheerful times!
I’ve found it interesting that a lot of the coverage here, including from the CBC (our BBC equivalent) has been fairly nuanced. There’s been tremendous respect for the Queen as a person, but many allusions to the number of Caribbean countries who have ditched or will likely soon ditch the monarchy, the awful history of Crown relationships with indigenous peoples, and the fact that ~50% of Canadians have no strong feelings or negative feelings about the monarchy as an institution. Lots of discussion of how constitutionally difficult it would be to switch government systems in Canada (requiring a majority in every province and in the senate, or such like - NEVER going to happen), but also ample condemnation of what the new King Charles represents.
Most people in my circles aren’t really talking about any of it, in real life. One of two of my Canadian friends on Facebook have posted short tributes, but mostly people are still posting family photos, cat pics, various news articles unrelated to the Queen, “in search of baby onesies, size 6mo”, etc.
The day of the funeral will be a public holiday in some small provinces, but not in the largest ones.
