If you live outside the UK, were your TV schedules cleared for the Queens death?

Just that.
How much coverage is this getting were you are?

Anyone?

I’m in Ireland - no, tv schedule the same. There’s an item on the regular news covering whatever has happened that day with respect to the queens death. The national channel, rte, may televise the funeral I’d say, but most households here have access to the uk tv channels anyways so can watch it if they wanted on there.

Gwenhwyfar · 13/09/2022 21:32

No, but here in Belgium they do love to have programmes about the English RF (had quite a few for the anniversary of Diana's death) so I think there were quite a few. I only watch Netflix and YouTube anyway.

BackToWhereItAllBegan · 13/09/2022 21:37

In the US, the 24 hour news channels are still covering it at some point during every hour and have shown the major events live. I haven't seen anything on regular channels since the day she died other than occasional tribute programs.
I believe many channels will be showing the funeral live but it's on at 5am my time so they're not really having to cancel a lot other things to show it!

DirectionToPerfection · 13/09/2022 21:42

In Ireland, no. The cost of living crisis is the main issue right now.

Charles' visit to NI was the third or fourth item on the news tonight, and that actually has some relevance to us here.

I'd imagine blanket coverage is very much UK specific.

Kendodd · 13/09/2022 21:46

The day she died, was it just on the normal TV news at normal time (lead item?) or did TV schedules change, some programmes cancelled?

I’m in Portugal and I can’t imagine why the tv schedules would be cleared because an extremely elderly monarch from another country died.

I saw one news story on my news app the day it happened, but otherwise nothing.

They do find some way to run a story about Ronaldo almost every day, mind. When he dies it will be the end of days.

Geamhradh · 13/09/2022 21:48

Italy- last Thursday evening, yes. Over the weekend it was first item on the News plus various "specials"
Now, depending on timing of events and whether they're coinciding with the News schedule or not, they're headline stories, or second or third item. Some reporters are wearing black.
The funeral will be televised by the main channels.

No, the only times I remember tv schedules being cleared like that here were 9/11 and when princess diana died

In Ireland, the TV schedule didn't change on Thursday or Friday but it was the main story on the news. Five days later, it's not.

Why would other countries show blanket news coverage of the death of a foreign monarch? Even people in the UK are fed up with it.

newtb · 13/09/2022 21:53

In France on TF1 there was a very long programme on Thursday evening. Don't know about the other channels.

HairyMcLarie · 13/09/2022 21:56

NZ here. Still main headlines on news. Live broadcasters wearing black still. Flags all at half mast.
TV schedules remain generally the same with some additional Queen programmes

Celticandco · 13/09/2022 21:59

I'm fascinated to know what the coverage is like overseas too. I was living abroad when Diana died plus of course very different back then but it was weird seeing it from a totally remote country.

RascafríaMom · 13/09/2022 22:01

I am in Spain and I know there is some interest, especially because of the connection to our own monarchy here and the whole drama of who is and who is not attending, and could the previous king be served legal documents if he went.

But so far, no television schedule updates for it . I would be hugely surprised if it wasn't covered extensively on RTVE's 24 horas given what they did for the last royal wedding.

Rainbowqueeen · 13/09/2022 22:09

Australia.

Yes. Main story on news still. All broadcasters wearing black - only now adding a bit of colour.
Lots of RF documentaries being shown.
On the weekend the major channels sowed little else

GrumpyPanda · 13/09/2022 22:13

Germany. Aaarghhh.

  • it's been dominating/been very prominent on regular news broadcasts. For the first couple of days even crowded out the simultaneous and truly astounding news from Ukraine.
  • Special extended coverage after the main news, same as when there's major flooding or political events.
  • A bunch of scheduled broadcasts al across channels getting pulled in favour of re-running old bios on the Queeen/the Royals.
  • I presume one of the two main public channels will do wall to wall coverage on the 19th. That's also when they'll get their ghastly old dinosaurs, aka "aristocracy experts" or "aristocracy journalists" out of the closet once more. Never mind the country's a republic and "aristocracy" hasn't been a thing for over a hundred years.

Oh and they keep dragging up some obscure relatives on the German side gushing about their family's visit to various royal occasions.

Thank God for Netflix. (And thank God the chief London correspondent for the main public TV channel, Annette Dittert, is a smart level-headed lady, quite active on UK Twitter, who actually does provide sensible political context and wouldn't be caught dead gushing.)

Kendodd · 13/09/2022 22:17

Thank God for Netflix
That's what I said 😀

I think the media and global coverage of this is a story in itself.

Where does ARD and ZDF drag these people up from? - they're always Von Someone that you've never heard of, or the fawning editor of an obscure Royalist magazine.

In comparison to the UK coverage the German channels seems comparatively sane, but it was a few days in to things when we started switching to German TV to get away from the wall-to-wall coverage om UK tv. By then it was down to the 15 minute extra time programme following the main evening news.

onlylarkin · 14/09/2022 03:06

Not our regular news. Some of the 24/7 networks added quite a bit of coverage in. I had to go to bbc.com to watch it fully.

UpToMyElbowsInDiapers · 14/09/2022 03:27

In Canada there has been a fair bit of coverage but it isn’t constant. The day of, most news channels covered only the Queen, but by the next day it started quieting down. Still a major news item, but we also got a new Conservative party leader on Saturday, so that’s been pretty big news. There was a major knife attack in a small town last week with many casualties, which is also getting a lot of coverage. Cost of living, stock market plunge, wildfires… cheerful times!

I’ve found it interesting that a lot of the coverage here, including from the CBC (our BBC equivalent) has been fairly nuanced. There’s been tremendous respect for the Queen as a person, but many allusions to the number of Caribbean countries who have ditched or will likely soon ditch the monarchy, the awful history of Crown relationships with indigenous peoples, and the fact that ~50% of Canadians have no strong feelings or negative feelings about the monarchy as an institution. Lots of discussion of how constitutionally difficult it would be to switch government systems in Canada (requiring a majority in every province and in the senate, or such like - NEVER going to happen), but also ample condemnation of what the new King Charles represents.

Most people in my circles aren’t really talking about any of it, in real life. One of two of my Canadian friends on Facebook have posted short tributes, but mostly people are still posting family photos, cat pics, various news articles unrelated to the Queen, “in search of baby onesies, size 6mo”, etc.

The day of the funeral will be a public holiday in some small provinces, but not in the largest ones.

RaptureGal · 14/09/2022 04:32

Here in the states, CNN has devoted about 3/4 of its programming to the Queen's passing. They cover daily events such as travel, ceremonies, family standing at vigil etc with segments featuring commentary by various British journalists. They've also been showing documentaries on the Queens life. I don't get other news channels but I'm sure CNN isn't the only one here giving this story the attention it deserves. Americans LOVED Queen Elizabeth! 🇺🇸🇦🇽💙❤

I'm in NZ, and on the day she died, on the channel I watch, it was wall to wall coverage for the rest of the day/night. The following night they showed a lot of programmes about the Queen and her life.

onlythreenow · 14/09/2022 04:54

Oh, and half of the regular news team seem to be in the UK at the moment!

teezletangler · 14/09/2022 05:12

In Canada it was blanket coverage of the death for the first day in Canada. Nothing else shown on the main channels.
