Was Princess Diana offered security after her divorce?

There is an interesting article in The Sun that says amongst other things, that Harry is asking lots of questions about Diana's death e.g. " Official judicial sources in Paris say the Duke of Sussex’s researchers have been seeking information about the car crash that killed his mother 25 years ago." One of the questions is allegedly whether Diana had been offered security after her divorce.

After her fatal crash Scotland Yard asked why Diana had no security. Tina Brown said that Diana had turned down security. But the suspicion is that Diana is in the same situation as Harry i.e. only offered security if attending an official royal event such as the Jubilee, but refused security for the rest of the time.

I know it is The Sun, but given Harry's fight around official security in the UK, which he has offered to pay for but still been refused - it rings true that he would be asking questions about his mother's security. It is clear if she was using official security at the time, she would still be alive.

Opinion seems divided on this. Regardless of whether she was attending an official event, she'd have had security present whenever she was with William and Harry because they had it round the clock.

It was mentioned when she was on Dodi's yacht that the Al-Fayed security team were protecting her.

Spanielsarepainless · 16/08/2022 12:51

She turned it down. If Harry hadn't emigrated he would have probably been offered it too.

DoubleShotEspresso · 16/08/2022 13:03

She would never been able to "opt out" of security if she was anywhere close to her sons.

She declined proper security whilst going about private business and life due to the paranoia she developed largely as a result of Martin Bashir.

I'm not sure what Harry hopes to glean from these arrangements as there are such distinct differences but do feel he and his family warrant/need formal security especially in the UK. I hope he gets some progress somehow.
Saddest point is how utterly unavoidable this holy mess really was.

Georgeskitchen · 16/08/2022 13:09

As the mother of the future King she was entitled to Scotland Yard protection. She declined, possibly because she thought they would be reporting her movements back to Buck House. If she hadn't declined its likely she would still be here . Royal bodyguards would never have allowed her to travel in that car

MintJulia · 16/08/2022 13:09

No, as the mother of the future king, Diana was offered police protection but turned it down.

Harry on the other hand is no longer a senior royal. He doesn't qualify for his own police protection team while in the UK, but is obviously protected while at Royal residences or with other Royals.

annoyedneighbour1 · 16/08/2022 13:28

I believe she did have it after the divorce for a time, but declined it after a while.

She thought, probably correctly, that the security were feeding back information to the RF about what she'd been up to.

I wouldn't want security with me 24/7 who were on my exes payroll either. I would certainly have gotten my own though!

William and Harry were both at boarding school, so she was only with them for part of the year.

I know Tina Brown said she had been offered Royal security and turned it down. But I can't see anything official that says that. So I wonder if it was true?

@MintJulia Diana was no longer an official member of the Royal Family.

I am interested to know if she was offered security or not. This may be a question answered in Harry's memoir as presumably the French investigating officials would know the truth and would have asked those questions.

Wasn't this all gone into at the inquest?

Astrabees · 16/08/2022 14:06

If Diana had worn a seatbelt she would still be here. Security is a bit of a red herring, anyone can be involved in a serious car accident.

Ohnonevermind · 16/08/2022 14:16

How would Harry know the facts at the time ? He was a young child when they divorced.

He may have an opinion and ‘his truth’ but as he’s in the middle of a court case about this issue , I’d look for confirmation elsewhere.

TeapotCollection · 16/08/2022 14:22

I think I read at the time that as she was no longer HRH the automatic right to security was taken away

Could be wrong though, and as others have said she’d have definitely got it when her sons were with her

Madasahattersteaparty1749 · 16/08/2022 14:34

This was covered in the inquest, she was allowed to retain her security officers but declined as rightly or wrongly was so paranoid that she refused unless the boys were with her.

Such a tragic situation as the paranoia was fuelled by lies fed to her by Bashir.

Harry is fighting so hard to retain the security that he obviously places a high level of trust in them.

Do you have a link? Because I can't find anything saying she was offered and declined security except Tina Brown and those quoting her.

No one has said Harry knows the facts. Harry is trying to find out the facts through official sources.

@antelopevalley

You’ve said the question of security could be answered in Harry’s memoir, I said I wouldn’t use that as a credible source in these circumstances.

antelopevalley · 16/08/2022 16:03

I said perhaps we would find out in his memoir, a very different meaning to the one you ascribe to me. If he was told directly by French authorities and quoted them, of course it has merit.

Opinion isn’t divided, because it’s on the record.

She was offered it, and declined it - Martin Bashir has a lot to answer for, because some of her reasoning was that it was just continuing control and spying on her.

She was not however allowed to change the security arrangements for the princes, so when they were with her, she was also covered by their security.

PurpleWisteria · 16/08/2022 16:07

Another day another conspiracy theory from a predictable source.

Tin hats anyone?

She should have worn a seatbelt but if she’d had proper security they surely wouldn’t have let her get in a car driven by someone who’d been drinking alcohol and they wouldn’t have got into a chase with the paparazzi.

antelopevalley · 16/08/2022 16:13

Can someone please provide a link saying she was offered security and declined it?
Because the only source I can find is Tina Brown and people quoting her.
Which makes me think that no one in the public actually knows.

Why do you not say that to the posters who spend a lot of time defending the Royal Family and saying how wonderful they are?

OP posts:
tiggergoesbounce · 16/08/2022 16:31

Yes OP i haven't seen it on record either so it would be interesting to see at what point she actually declined it.

I can understand Harry wanting to investigate it further now and get his own answers to satisfy himself of the truth.

HinchcliffeandMurgatroyd · 16/08/2022 16:35

She turned it down. They urged her to reconsider, but she was adamant, by all accounts.

Now it seems Martin Bashir and his self serving lies might have been a large part of the reason that she thought personal protection policemen = spies.
