More Alleged Dodgy Donations

It appears that Prince Charles is happy to enable and encourage donations from anyone to his charities. Million in a suitcase or carrier bags? No problems. From Osama Bin Laden's family? No problem. From someone with ties to Putin? No problem. From someone seeking an honour through a donation? No problem.
This man is going to be our King.

"Prince Charles met a Russian oligarch with links to Vladimir Putin the same year his charity accepted a £300,000 donation from the businessman. The Prince’s Foundation received the cash from a charity run by Moshe Kantor in 2020, despite the billionaire having been named on a ‘Putin list’ released by the US Treasury in 2018.
Mr Kantor, who lives in a £31million mansion in Hampstead, north London, was sanctioned by the UK in April after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. But the Moscow-born oligarch had already spent years forging ties with Putin, while funnelling more than £15.5million into British institutions, including a £ 3 million pledge to the Prince’s Foundation.
The revelations have sparked fresh concerns over Charles’s dealings with controversial donors after reports that he ‘brokered’ a donation from the family of Osama Bin Laden – which Clarence House has denied."

I'm sure the actual workers and volunteers could struggle on without them . Somehow . Lol

CathyorClaire · 14/08/2022 21:19

Sophie and Edward are heavily involved with the D of E work

He was always supposed to be next in line for DofE but that appears a little doubtful come good King Charles and his ironclad grip on the gongs :

Well obviously they could my point was would they. I think the royal connection is a big thing with the DofE Award and it would be unfortunate if that came to an end and it gradually wound down.

Goodness me, how do those countries in like the US and others get along without a monarchy to do their charities.

I do have to disagree with you there. The DofE scheme has been established for decades, it works, I honestly don't think it's going anywhere. PP died a while ago now and obviously, given his age and health, wasn't actively involved for years I imagine.

I think Princes Trust should be passed to William, Charles will be too busy doing kingly stuff

I hope you're right but I know that going to receive their gold from a member of the royal family was actually a big thing for the kids I know. It was also a big thing for their parents who loved the idea. Will that have a negative effect if the royal connection stops? Would they change the name of the scheme? None of us know but I do know it is a force for good and I hope it continues.

Passing the princes trust to William is probably a good idea when the time comes because as you say Charles will be busy and he isn't getting any younger. Still leaves it in royal hands though so don't think that addresses the issue of royal patronage.

Princes Trust and Duke of Edinburgh were set up by the Royal Family with aid of many staff. So it makes sense to stay in the family.
Passing the Princes Trust to William would hopefully stop all the alleged dodgy donations happening under Charles.

But as for your second para, what do they do? What, I don't really know because we could function as a Society quite easily without them. Life is grey and dull enough. What do the Spanish royal family do?

Actually @antelopevalley , I do know a little bit about the Prince's Trust, when it was initially set up. Regional committees were set up in various areas, supported by local business people on a voluntary basis. My boss at the time was one of the local committee members. They mentored individuals trying to get an idea off the ground, and gave them grants to enable this.

Charles was very much involved and interested - I remember a number of visits to 'our' area, and arranging for him to meet various recipients of grants. Of course, a little bit of sparkle from the royal connection encouraged the local business people to become involved, but they were knowledgeable and experienced, and many young entrepreneurs found the 'leg up' that the PT gave them extremely helpful.

I am sure that now there are paid staff involved, but it was set up on a voluntary basis, and without Prince Charles would never have happened. Credit where credit's due!

Didn't Chales use his severance pay when he left the navy to set up the princes trust? I'm sure I heard that somewhere.

ajandjjmum · 15/08/2022 13:01

I can't remember that from the time @ancientgran , but I have read it since.

I can't remember where I heard it but I'm glad someone also heard it, don't want to start imagining things.

I suppose his severance pay wasn't a significant sum to him but still a nice gesture.

ajandjjmum · 15/08/2022 15:59

To be fair, the initial grants weren't massive - a few hundred pounds often - but enough to get some people started.
