Curtsying

Can anyone tell me why it seemed that only 1 or 2 people curtsied when Charles walked past?
would it have been different if it was the Queen? I can’t imagine so many choosing not to if they should have.

I think the old royal courtesies have been much relaxed during Elizabeth IIs reign such that it’s only done during formal affairs as a sort of ceremonial affectation. The arrival and just walking by before the formal event itself is a kind of grey area and so I think it’s the persons choice to curtesy or head bow or not.

FlowerArranger · 04/06/2022 08:07

Because the rest didn't want to make fools of themselves with this kind of outdated nonsense...?

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 04/06/2022 08:17

It's such cringe-inducing subservience, I doubt it occurred to people. I'd be horrified to see crowds of people doing that.

JenniferBarkley · 04/06/2022 08:18

Only the ones without HRH would have to curtsy to Charles anyway, and even then only the ones who hadn't seen him already that day.

I presume more of the young royals curtsy to Charles than to, say, William or Beatrice, out of respect for his rank.

Open to correction on all of this.

FrecklesMalone · 04/06/2022 08:20

I can't believe people still curtsey at all. It's vile.

JenniferBarkley · 04/06/2022 08:23

Hmm, question for those who know more than me: we know Louise and James don't use their HRHs and princess/prince titles. But does that mean that on the strict days they have to curtsy to the HRHs? And do the non HRHs curtsy to them?

On a previous thread someone said that they only bow/curtesy the first time they've seen them that day, so if they met earlier they won't do it again. (Sounds very silly written down)

silentpool · 04/06/2022 11:17

I don't consider myself to be a lesser being - they would receive a firm handshake (in non Covid times). The idea of doing a curtsy is so upstairs/downstairs 😱to a Colonial like me.

CapYourDoff · 04/06/2022 11:20

"oh hi, you were born then, ok let me give you a curtsy."

I know it is not obligatory but FGS serfdom will never end with this lot.

...but I don't feel as if I'm being treated as a serf . No-one owns me. I have a vote by law. I don't have as many material things as some people, but this is certainly not serfdom.

I was more concerned that the Bishop of London curtseyed to everyone including Harry and Meghan

This

It’s so archaic and subservient. No one should be curtsying to anyone. I sure as hell wouldn’t.

Viviennemary · 04/06/2022 15:30

There is a strict protocol on who curtseys to who. And aldo depends on whether or not a royal spouse is present. Its all listed somewhere

FoiledByTheInsect · 04/06/2022 15:31

Maybe because 1.2% of the UK population are thought to have ECD, extreme compliance disorder. Symptoms include voting Tory; grinning idiotically at people in silly hats they saw on the telly; fawning uncontrollably; bowing; curtseying; "flagshagging" and not understanding which century they are living in. Unfortunately there's no known cure.

Precedence is not the same thing as who curtsies to whom. An HRH doesn't bow or curtsey to another HRH, no matter who is present.

@upinaballoon When did you last vote for a new monarch?

CockSpadget · 04/06/2022 17:51

Why on earth should the luck of the draw of whose fanny you exit, determine that people have to simper to you. Madness.

AuntieMarys · 04/06/2022 17:52

A load of bollocks

BadgerB · 04/06/2022 19:56

I have nothing against women priests, but a bishop in full vestments.....curtseying! Maybe she should have bowed?

Roussette · 04/06/2022 20:28

I won't curtsey to anyone.

A recent pic of Zara. WTAF????

That’s some achievement in those heels.

I think it’s terrible that tennis players were expected to curtsey at Wimbledon- Google tells me this stopped in 2003, but I am sure it does happen still.

Mind you I was pissed off that Serena Williams had to queue up at the royal wedding

LesLavandes · 06/06/2022 12:05

Eugenie is HRH but she curtsied to the Queen at her wedding
