Curtsying

Can anyone tell me why it seemed that only 1 or 2 people curtsied when Charles walked past?
would it have been different if it was the Queen? I can’t imagine so many choosing not to if they should have.

Maybe because 1.2% of the UK population are thought to have ECD, extreme compliance disorder. Symptoms include voting Tory; grinning idiotically at people in silly hats they saw on the telly; fawning uncontrollably; bowing; curtseying; "flagshagging" and not understanding which century they are living in. Unfortunately there's no known cure.

Love it. Totally this!

Eugenie is HRH but she curtsied to the Queen at her wedding

The Queen is HM, not HRH. Everyone curtsies to the queen.

(For the avoidance of doubt, I find it all batshit, but also fascinating.)

Hotelhelp · 07/06/2022 01:09

I’m another who finds it mental but absolutely fascinating too.

So if Kate walked into the Queens living room, just the two of them, she’d have to curtesy to her? It’s wild, it really is.

JenniferBarkley · 07/06/2022 09:08

I think they probably all do curtsy to the queen, older generation and all that.

I'd love to know about the younger ones, do you think Zara curtsies to William or indeed Kate if they're just meeting up casually?! Surely not, but who knows.

godmum56 · 07/06/2022 09:13

Nobody has to curtsey or bow. people choose to do it. www.royal.uk/greeting-member-royal-family

I have nothing against women priests, but a bishop in full vestments.....curtseying! Maybe she should have bowed?

I'm still wincing from when she put her mitre on the Altar. Should have had a server standing by to hold it!

Precedence is not the same thing as who curtsies to whom. An HRH doesn't bow or curtsey to another HRH, no matter who is present.

They do if they’re higher ranking. Kate, for example, has curtsied to Charles even though they’re both HRH.

One HM will never curtsy to another HM though.

From everything I’ve read (was my child’s obsession for a few years) the younger ones don’t fuss with it with each other, especially on casual occasions.

Apparently at Christmas they all like to see the Queen as early as possible in the day so they can get the curtsy/bow out of the way.

I don't think that's expected though, it's a mark of respect, curtsying even when she doesn't have to.

(Batshit)

(Batshit)

It is absolutely expected with the senior ones - the only time they don’t at public occasions is if they have already seen them that day and curtsied.

That’s why you get odd occasions where you see Kate and Eugenie curtsying, but William doesn’t now and Beatrice doesn’t curtsy. They’ve already seen them earlier in the day.

It’ll not be too long before we see people like Eugenie and Beatrice regularly curtsying to William and Kate at public events as they get more senior.

JustLyra · 07/06/2022 10:10

The thing with curtsying is that they are curtsying to the position rather than the person.

@upinaballoon When did you last vote for a new monarch?

973 AD

upinaballoon · 07/06/2022 10:20

Sssshhhh, keep this dark. I came 2nd in the Fawning and Scraping Competition last weekend.

Bugger off, Upinaballoon, you're not taking this wholly seriously.

It's pathetic. Surprised they don't say "my liege" what bowing enough to confirm the superiority.
Remind me again what century we're in?

SenecaFallsRedux · 07/06/2022 13:16

Precedence governs who enters a room first, whose car arrives last, etc. for formal events. Curtseying and bowing are matters of etiquette, not precedence.

This reporter is correct. The ones who say that HRHs are required to curtsey or bow to other HRHs who are senior in precedence are wrong.

I'll tell you something, Cockspadget, this country is ruled by unelected journalists, more than by anyone else. I believe the influence of the unelected Queen has less effect on my life than that of some unelected, axe-grinding little bugger masquerading as an impartial reporter, which is happening ALL DAY LONG.

angstridden2 · 13/06/2022 13:29

I think the members of the current Royal Family have a vested interest in curtsying/bowing and keeping ‘precedence’ alive. If this disappears how can they maintain a belief that there is a hierarchy with them at the top. As for Prince Andrew and his reference to his daughters as ‘the only blood princesses’ ...welcome to Ruritania! If we have a Monarchy surely they can behave more like the Scandi royals in this day and age.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 13/06/2022 13:33

I get second-hand embarrassment just thinking about Theresa May and her fondness for curtseying. Down with curtseying!
