The royal family

Are 3, 6 and 8 year olds really playing these games?

In an article in the People today William is talking about his family Christmas. A typical general meaningless article. But he claims that his children's favourite board games are monopoly and risk. Charlotte and Louis seem far too young to enjoy playing these.

William received one question about board games, and he shared that Monopoly and Risk are favorites in his household with Kate Middleton and their three children: Prince George, 8, Princess Charlotte, 6, and Prince Louis, 3. However, it’s something that “usually everyone gets very cross about because they lose.”

Probably not. I don’t know what risk is but you can get child version of monopoly. Maybe that’s what he means?

TheUnicornDuck · 17/12/2021 14:22

My 3 and 5 year olds like board games and we play monopoly, but the kids version. Maybe he means that

NoSquirrels · 17/12/2021 14:22

8 & 6 is definitely not too young for Monopoly. Risk is long and potentially boring for that age group.

I suspect what it really means is that they/he doesn’t really play board games!

Goneback2school · 17/12/2021 14:25

There are junior versions of both games. I don't know about Risk but my 8 and 6 year olds would play normal Monopoly.

Attictroll · 17/12/2021 14:25

6 and 8 totally ok with monopoly in my experience- risk not sure

FreeButtonBee · 17/12/2021 14:25

there are so many better board games for kids! So agree that what it means is probably they are on fortnite rather than having family time playing a board game [cynical]

That said, my 8yos quite like risk (their dad's old version played at the grandparents house so nostalgia value) but there are so many better ones.

ponkydonkey · 17/12/2021 14:27

I don't think they are allowed any tech... so probably are all very good at board games! Those poor nannies 🤣

RustyBear · 17/12/2021 14:27

Risk junior is for age 5+

cloudtree · 17/12/2021 14:28

Mine played both of those at 8 and 6. I suspect a 3 year old is on someone’s team.

cloudtree · 17/12/2021 14:29

Risk is still the favourite in this house. It’s a sure fire way to get DHs attention for five hours.

Mylittlepixie · 17/12/2021 14:40

My kids are 5 and 7. They both love the kid version of monopoly. We just started playing the normal one with him and he prefers that and plays it really well. The 5 year old is too young for it.

Christmas1988 · 17/12/2021 14:49

My children played Monopoly at 3, a simple game with lots of help from adults playing. I’ve never heard of Risk.

Samcro · 17/12/2021 14:50

wow op you are obsessed with the rf

BalloonSlayer · 17/12/2021 14:55

William's kids know the actual people who own most of the monopoly places in real life. Doesn't the Duke of Westminster own Park Lane and Mayfair?

FoggySpecs · 17/12/2021 14:56

My DH taught my kids to play monopoly when DD was 5, they know all about mortgages and bankruptcy and are fiendish players. He also taught them chess, DD is really good and got picked for the school chess squad.

itwasntaparty · 17/12/2021 14:56

Monopoly is an instant family argument!

TeaSoakedDisasterMagnet · 17/12/2021 15:01

Exactly what is your point though? Do you think he’s lying and he never plays with his kids and so just said it as a “filler” answer or do you think he’s showing off how “advanced” his kids are and so he’s out of touch with the public? Or does it just not really matter and he just gave an answer that people expect? I don’t really know why you’re remarking on this one bit of an interview.

ItIsTheHollySeason · 17/12/2021 15:24

My children have all played monopoly from 4. My 6&5 year old love it. Proper monopoly, not monopoly junior. I think the idea of the junior one is it is faster for shorter attention spans but same principle, although Im not 100%.
Is the youngest an older or younger 3? I find younger siblings pick things up faster, especially when there are 2+ older siblings. Don't think it's beyond realms of possibility especially if an older 3.
No idea on risk though, never played it.

Kotatsu · 17/12/2021 15:35

My kids have been playing children's monopoly for a few years - probably since youngest was about 5..

Risk no, but they play computer games that may as well be risk..

Also I seem to remember when I was a kid, the adults would kind of team-up with a younger child, who would wander in and out of the game as they wanted snacks/got bored, but would be called on to whisper and conspire with at key points :)

kowari · 17/12/2021 15:40

DS could play Monopoly as an independent player at six and provide decent competition. I'd say many more children could play with some help. Eight plus is just a guideline.

Elfonthesofa · 17/12/2021 15:47

Well my kids got Monopoly last Christmas and we've played it loads since. They are the same ages as George and Charlotte (DS2 was born the day before Charlotte).

I'm sure the royal kids love spending hours playing Minecraft, Roblox and watching Cartoon Network too. But it doesn't sound quite as twee as Monopoly and Risk round the fire with granny, does it?

My point is that I am doubting this. Maybe they don't play board games with William and so he made up the first thing he could think of? Even if they had played them in a team where they don't really know what is going on, then it wouldn't be their favourite. Unless they were the only board games they played.

The Norland Nanny tells them that she’s been playing Monopoly with the kids when she’s actually stuck them in front of Disney Plus all day like the rest of us

julieca · 17/12/2021 18:57

Grin yeah perhaps.

My DS wanted grown up Risk for his birthday and he loves it! I find it boring Grin My 6 year old wouldn’t want to play it though. They both like monopoly but my little one prefers junior monopoly.
