I like the idea and I like the video. (Not that keen on the big desk) And I though MM looked...alive!

Not sure who the other woman was. But there was good chemistry.

I do think that the main problem with this sort of thing coming from someone who will never be without, is it that it can only ever appear to be patronising to those women who are unemployed.

derxa · 05/08/2021 23:49

I love Melissa McCarthy and Bridesmaids is one of my favourite films but this video ..... Hmm

Roussette · 05/08/2021 23:50

I haven't called you anything Lola so please don't insinuate I have

You were the one with your categories of posters on here that was rude in my opinion

MarshaBradyo · 05/08/2021 23:51

I think the women who received work from Smartworks mentorship programme will disagree with you.

You just have to do a quick scroll down, and see the number of 'she got the job' posts on the people they helped.

I don’t know anything about this charity but will read.

I still prefer recent move to allocation of work above mentoring - eg rather than lunch / advice with someone you put them on the client job.

callmeadoctor · 05/08/2021 23:52

The video makes me feel patronised (personally). I can't help how I feel and I guess other women may feel the same (shrugs shoulders)

Zuluqueen · 05/08/2021 23:52

@Roussette

But all these people aren't rich and privileged. Some are. But many are hugely worthwhile leaders in their field. I just know this is going to be labelled just rich celebs when it really is not. And I, and others, have said this on this thread countless times
This is what I don’t get, there are so many women who are not privileged, who are not rich from all sorts of backgrounds who have volunteered for this. It’s not all celebrities and privileged people .

I don't understand this it's like you are outraged on behalf of people you have no idea about. The people I work with would fall over themselves to receive this kind of support whether or not it led directly to a job. The ones she is helping are probably in great need.
Roussette · 05/08/2021 23:53

Surely mentoring can lead to anything, isn't it opening doors, passing on contacts, giving advice, steering someone in the right direction etc

hangonamo · 05/08/2021 23:54

This is the same BS excuse that was given by those who were criticising Markus Rashford for his children meals. As if communities must sit on their hands when there are problems they can help out with.

Wrong - Marcus was doing the exact opposite, always addressing the issue as the responsibility of government. And when they refused to step up, he shamed them into a U turn. He knew the problem was the responsibility of government, he made sure everyone knew, and eventually he forced the govt to solve it. A very smart and effective use of his profile indeed.

Also is your mention that communities should sit on their hands - I did say that it could be useful for some people and they should get on with it in the meantime, but I wish they would make the point that it's not actually solving the problem. If they don't make that point, it's not just ineffective, it's harmful, because it reinforces the idea that it's the responsibility of individual women, and just helps to perpetuate systemic inequalities.

There has been so much stuff in the news in the past week and you would expect to find really interesting discussions about the role of the royals and their shenanigans on here but there is nothing. I guess someone would say why not start a thread if you are so pressed.. so there is that. I’m just fascinated that the British royals who matter get a pass on here.

Being all conservative values only applies to MM did you not know. Jack and his shenanigans, leaving wife with baby alone at home. No problem. Kitty Spencer married one of the father's pals, double her age. All nice and cozy. Imagine the pops that would have been taken if it was H&M.

@LolaSmiles too many of your posts too quote but I agree with all of them.

callmeadoctor · 05/08/2021 23:56

Prep, Im not outraged? Just unimpressed at a very wealthy person offering mentorship when an actual job (or childcare vouchers) would be more useful.

LolaSmiles · 05/08/2021 23:56

callmeadoctor
I see your point.
Someone with money, power, influence and (based on her previous work) a desire to improve things for millions of women could have a large impact by connecting various groups together, supporting lobbying, using their press connections and working to dismantle the big systemic issues that affect millions of women instead of picking 40 women and bagging good headlines for a week.

Roussette · 05/08/2021 23:57

I just know @Zuluqueen that this will be written off because there ARE famous celebs like Beyonce as part of it
It really takes away from some seriously talented people who couldn't be further from a celeb.

Am lost as to what this has to do with this thread?
jozipozi31 · 05/08/2021 23:58

What is a 40/minute mentorship? Just enough for the mentor to feel noble?

Totally impractical publicity-stunt bollocks.

Roussette · 05/08/2021 23:58

But Lola it's not just 40.
It's been said on this thread loads of times.
My twitter feed is awash with people laying out their position and offering to mentor.
It's a movement not just 40

LolaSmiles · 06/08/2021 00:01

I haven't called you anythingLolaso please don't insinuate I have
I didn't say you did.
I said people should be free to challenge and criticise Megan's public work, like any public figure, without being called meghan haters and bullies, which is what happens on almost every thread where some posters aren't very good at distinguishing between debating the actions of a public figure and bullying.

Mummy194 · 06/08/2021 00:02

You will type till your hands go numb.............

On top of repeated posts also links of who is involved as well as screenshots. They are not interested in anything except pushing their agenda. Wether false or true.

callmeadoctor · 06/08/2021 00:03

I would love somebody to speak up for all the women who have spent 12/18 months looking after their children during covid, home schooling etc whilst (and I am generalising I know) their husbands carry on their work and lives as normal. That is the bigger issue, no mentoring is going to make a difference to their lives.

LolaSmiles · 06/08/2021 00:04

Mummy194
What agenda?

What's the agenda about being sceptical about celebrity initiatives because they're often superficial and too often don't address systemic issues?
Or is it only an agenda if that position also applies to Meghan?

Zuluqueen · 06/08/2021 00:05

@callmeadoctor

Meghan Markle’s fans have raised over 50k to one of the charities she has supported for years in India. She & Harry have donated to countless charities over the past year alone , yet it’s never enough for some people, whenever that’s publicized by the charities themselves she gets mocked. Just a few weeks ago there was a cake mpe king & dismissal of the donation they did to a Texas homeless charity. The question then for some of us is why does she get criticism for every gesture she does, we are told other royals are better than her as they do charity just right . So shouldn’t the tabloids & masses even MN be littered by all their good deeds and not a non working royal like Meghan?. The unfairness of it all grates
Zuluqueen · 06/08/2021 00:07

When they lobbied companies, governments & other celebs for vaccine live concert their efforts were dismissed by some . So really she can’t win
callmeadoctor · 06/08/2021 00:08

Zulu, you are missing my point. It is patronising to suggest that women need mentoring when actually they need financial support.

callmeadoctor · 06/08/2021 00:09

Indeed it feels even more patronising that meghan is suggesting that clearly men don't need mentoring..................................................
