Can anyone recommend something that is effective, that I can buy online? I’ve just paid £140 (£70 for the treatment, £70 consultation fee) for one cat, and reeling a bit at the cost!

No help from me I’m afraid op but I’d be interested too. I have two cats and am struggling to find anything that will work! Everything I have tried stops working a few months in and I’m at my wits end.

ILoveKits · 15/10/2026 11:18

I have a subscription with my vet for £17.50 pcm, per cat. It covers their vaccs, two checkups each per annum and four lots of three monthly Felpreva, which works. I find it good value.

This is what I had where we lived before. £28 per month, all consultations free, included flea treatments and annual vaccinations. Current place in London (chain) doesn’t do this. I can, however, get the claws clipped for £15. The old cat has monthly injections, so I pay £100 for these plus £70 consultation fee as the vet nurses can’t do them.

I have the same as ILoveKits, £16.99 per month for flea, inoculation and two consultations plus other stuff.

murasaki · 15/10/2026 11:31

I buy advantage from amazon. Roughly 7 quid per tube depending on cat size. You can set up a monthly sub that makes it a bit cheaper. Some people say it's stopped working for them but it seems to work on mine. You put in cat sex, age, weight etc.

Can you see if there's a good independent to switch to?

Allergictoironing · 15/10/2026 19:14

An annual MoT is recommended for all cats anyway, and vets can't prescribe flea and worm treatments without knowing what the cat weights.

I'm a little confused about the £70 for flea treatment - is that for a month or a 3 month dose, or is it for a pack of 3 to be used monthly, and does it include wormer? The flea and worm combined prescription spot on I get from my vets they charge me about £35 for a pack of 3 monthly doses.

Allergictoironing · 15/10/2026 19:15

Oh and my vets is also part of a large chain.

SpareVanKeys · 15/10/2026 19:27

BRAVECTO seems to be extremely effective and the treatment lasts 12 weeks. The vet needs to see the cat and does a prescription. You can then buy it online (I use Pet Drugs Online)

Iheartlibrarians · 15/10/2026 22:11

Bravecto Plus every 3 months here.

He hates it- I've just had to do it tonight and the body language is extremely clear- but it seems to work, and to last.

I was about to post exactly this.
The prescription (for two doses, which is six months' supply) is about £17 and the Bravecto itself is about £18 for one dose.

That comes to £52 for six months of treatment.

You can also get Bravecto Plus prescribed, which includes a wormer.

It’s for a three monthly dose. Which I suppose is not too bad but the £70 consultation fee on top is a bit steep.

My vet will also charge me £35 for a prescription if I want to get it filled online.

£35 !!!! at the practice i work at ours are £20 , 2nd drug onwards £13.
If you can't find a cheaper vets ask the vet to make the prescription a multi use one with 12 months worth of flea product , you can then either buy the whole 12 months in one , 2 x 6 months worth or 4 x 3 months worth each time depending on the product and pack size.
The advantage is that you will only pay one written prescription fee.

Advantage is the only thing that worked for us.

thecatneuterer · 15/10/2026 23:58

There is nothing you can buy online that works. Advantage used to be the only one, but fleas have become resistant. Even some of the vet prescribed ones don't work. The only ones worth having are Nexgard, Bravecto, Felpreva or Credelio. But, if money is a problem, once you've got on top of things you can then usually go for up to a few years, without using treatments and without getting fleas. Spend money on starting with the stuff that works and then reassess.

Another vote for Advantage. It still works on ours and I get it from Vet UK.

Allergictoironing · Yesterday 07:38

As I said above, the vet is obliged to weigh the cat occasionally to ensure they are prescribing the correct dose. For that you need to have an appointment to include this weigh in, as many cat owners can be blind to weight changes in their pets.

So you're looking at the vet's time, the vet nurse and/or admin's time to book this, and a chunk towards the surgery upkeep like rent, insurances (e.g. building and professional), utilities, cleaning, maintenance, gloves, wipes, towel washing...

£70 seems around typical for the appointment itself. The meds themselves seem a little pricy

SulkySeagull · Yesterday 07:43

I use Advantage from Amazon too - it’s worked and is cheap. Once when we had a bit of an infestation I doubled up with the Johnsons flea tablets (you can use those alongside a spot on) and it seems to do the trick.

Girlintheframe · Yesterday 09:15

Wow that is so expensive! Our vet sees our cat once a year for his vaccines. We buy 3 treatment at a time and costs around £30. I just phone up and order more when required until their next annual appointment.

SilverPink · Yesterday 09:53

I use advantage and fingers crossed it’s still working here. If you’re finding fleas it’s also worth using a spray like Indorex for the house. Expensive and a bit time consuming but it’s better than the fleas getting out of hand.

Do you mean that the cats have fleas and when you put it on them the fleas die? Or do you mean you use it regularly and your cats don't get fleas therefore it works? If the latter then your cats probably wouldn't have fleas anyway. I have multiple cats and I only flea treat if there is an outbreak, and that seems to be around once every four years. But then, if I do have an outbreak, Advantage no longer kills the fleas.

Mondaymorningmayhem · Yesterday 17:40

I do exactly as @SpareVanKeys , private prescription from Vet and buy from Petdrugsonline . Bravecto + is brilliant stuff and covers most worms and tics too. Apply 3 monthly. Never seen a flea on either of my two in 4 years

freeandfierce · Yesterday 17:48

I use Credelio tablets as recommended on here. They remain active for a month. I have a hairless cat so spot ons just roll off! And a Maine coon whose fur is so dense I can't get to her skin. The first time I used Credelio I unwrapped it put the tablet on the worktop and my spyhnx cat just ate it! You can get them without prescription overseas, costs about £50 for six tablets and take about a week to be delivered. Best treatment ever, having had an infestation before these work really well and fleas are not resistant to them. My Maine coon won't just eat them because she's fussy but I pop it into her wet food or in a pile of dreamies and down it goes!
