Cat being neutered and microchipped tomorrow

Hi I'm probably overthinking this all but my cat is my baby and I want to do everything possible to help him. He is booked in to the vet to be neutered and microchiped tomorrow and I'm just wondering if I need to do anything special once he's home, any tips and what to expect? Added a pic to pay the cat tax 🙂

Just remember that you are doing a great thing for his health and to help control the cat population. When he gets home confine him to one room; he might be wobbly and scared coming off the anaesthetisia. Sorry, I don’t know how to spell that word in British English. He also might want to run around and yowl. It’s hard to know how he will be.

Overtheatlantic · 05/07/2026 18:22

Also, he’s gorgeous 🐈‍⬛😻

dementedpixie · 05/07/2026 18:28

My 2 bounced back quickly after they were neutered. With males its such a small incision they didnt need stitches or a cone of shame

MiGataCalico · 05/07/2026 18:30

He will probably be very hungry, so have food ready for as soon as you get him home.

thejelliclecats · 05/07/2026 18:32

Mine climbed the curtains the second we let him out of the carrier 😂

Whiskyfromsmallglasses · 05/07/2026 18:44

So I'm probably worrying about nothing lol

Ours have always been fine. The whole confine them to one place and don't let them whizz around thing never happened- out of the cat carrier and off............Anyone would think they knew what we'd had done to them. He is a gorgeous boy- all our boys have been black. Here's our latest chap- Leaf, a ginormous Norwegian Forest.

Will he get painkillers?

OP posts:
mondaytosunday · 05/07/2026 20:21

Not really. Might be a bit groggy. Mine HATED their cone so I just took it off and they were fine, didn’t try to lick they’d would it anything.

dementedpixie · 05/07/2026 20:22

We weren't even offered a cone when my 2 were neutered

Whiskyfromsmallglasses · 05/07/2026 19:53

Will he get painkillers?

He'll probably be given a long lasting painkiller, unlikely he'll need more than that. If anything, a little pain might encourage him to refrain from any acrobatics.

There really is nothing to worry about, he will be absolutely fine.

Beautiful black cat! I miss my little darling :)

Yes and no… like you said he’s your baby and it’s tough to drop them off at the vet even when you know you are doing the absolute best thing for him.

I think the main thing is to give him peace and quiet when you bring him home, assuming that’s what he wants. Let him sleep it off.

He’ll be back to normal in no time, bless him. And he will be safer and less likely to roam without all those hormones 😉

Pearlstillsinging · 05/07/2026 22:24

The vet will advise you about next steps/ recovery at handover.

Shedmistress · 05/07/2026 22:26

For boys, mine are all semi feral, they get a bowl of lovely food which they completely ignore as they straggle out of the carrier into the garden and then they saunter back in 15 mins and wolf down and start meeping at me how angry they are about the whole last 24 hours.

My last feral has changed from footloose and fancy free pre neutering, to a completely love bug home boy who rarely even goes to the other side of the hedge.

Ahwig · 05/07/2026 22:28

I have 2 boys and after their micro chip and neutering, they were exactly as they were any other night. Had dinner, had zoomies and had naps. Their yearly mot and vaccinations on the other hand, they come home and sleep for 12 hours straight .

Washingforweeks · 05/07/2026 22:30

Mine was very scared and hid when we got home. You can’t let them out the house either which was very difficult as it was boiling but obviously couldn’t open windows etc 🤣 we gave plain dry cat food (usually wet) as the vet advised the pain killers they gave us to take home can make them nauseous xx

FredaMountfitchet · 05/07/2026 22:33

My girl was in a little babygro type suit ( with toilet area exposed) Absolutely fine .
Running around like a maniac when she got home from
the vets but then realised she was sore and calmed her jets for 48 hours . All good . The vet will give you pain meds .

SqueakyFromme · 05/07/2026 22:33

Yes OP nothing to worry about just keep your eye on the under tail area though your boy is black, may be harder to spot if there is any bleeding, mine was starving and also very hyper think it may have been the drugs, i wouldn’t even have known he’d had an op he was so normal, with the litter tray etc. it takes all of three months for the hormones to dissipate but so worth it my boy is now like a different cat. So much calmer, his trouble puffs were removed in March this year and he was older for the op, at 8 months

Whiskyfromsmallglasses · Yesterday 09:38

Well that's him dropped off which he was very vocal about lol

Mine was also chipped and neutered today. He’s back home and FURIOUS with me. Vet couldn’t get a cone on him (rescued street Tom) and I have no hope on my own! He has licked his bits two or three times in the past hour. Is this likely to be a problem?

I hope your kitty has a swift recovery @Whiskyfromsmallglasses

Whiskyfromsmallglasses · Yesterday 15:26

I have the exact same question I have been home 1.5hrs and he's licking. I've stopped him every time. I was going to give it till 5pm to see if he stops and if not I was going to phone the vet for a collar (this will not go down well) he is licking around the area and his legs as well. He had the little bandage thing off his leg within 5 minutes of being in so had to phone to ask if that was ok

Cat’s gonna cat. We’ve been through a few surgeries with our cat. First for an abscess which was cleaned and stitched by an emergency vet coming to our home. They put a soft cone on him and as soon as the anaesthetic wore off he was doing back flips. Not advisable. Second time was a torn cruciate ligament. Had to have a cage screwed into the leg to hold it in position for 6 weeks and was on cage rest. He wouldn’t eat or blink (mmm) in the cat hospital so was discharged with eye drops. We opened the pet carrier and he was so ravenous where he’d starved himself that he ate some biscuits out of my hand.

Whiskyfromsmallglasses · Yesterday 15:51

I don't know how I'm expected to stop all of this lol I went to the toilet and he jumped on the windowsill while I was away
